I blinked, returning to the moment, and chose to keep this to myself for now. It was better to stay quiet and observe.
“Oh, just something from work, I mumbled, slipping my phone back into my purse. I smiled and kept chatting with Melanie
for a while.
Out of nowhere, Melanie gave me a worried glance. “Tiffany, people are complicated. Before, I suggested holding off on the divorce to keep your advantage. But I recently heard about a case that really made me think.”
I lifted my head and asked softly, “What case?
Melanie looked down, as though the memory brought a heavy feeling. She spoke slowly. “There was a middle–aged woman. She didn’t want to divorce, and in the end, her husband hit her. When the case finally went to court, she found out he had. transferred their assets, and dumped over a million dollars of debt in her name. It was not a small amount.”
I stayed quiet, feeling a cold ache in my chest. “Marriage can really leave women unprotected. Without strong backing or affection from her family, a woman has no one but herself to rely on.”
Melanie looked up again, her tone more serious now. “That’s not even the main point I want to make. While discussing the case with my colleagues, some of the male ones said something chilling. When a man falls for another woman, he starts seeing his ex–wife as a burden. Ending the marriage isn’t always enough. He may lash out, hit her, even take her life, just to smooth the way for his new romance. To deliver the perfect love story to the mistress, the ex–wife might end up as collateral damage.
My stomach twisted painfully. Her words hit hard, like sharp glass in my gut.
Are men really capable of such cruelty?
There’s a saying that once a man gets rich, the first thing he does is toss aside the woman who stood by him. Like a blind man throwing away his walking stick after regaining sight. Maybe that’s just how people are.
“Do you think Shawn would become dangerous if I don’t go along with the divorce?” I asked quietly. I felt grateful that Melanie was honest with me. We usually don’t talk about heavy topics, we both like to keep things light and cheerful. But only someone who truly cares will speak about the risks, not just the hope.
She shook her head. “Not for sure. But there’s always a risk. Shawn isn’t just some average guy. He’s in a different league. He won’t leave you struggling financially, that’s true. Still, it’s better to be cautious”
