Shawn set down his utensils, stood up, walked over to the wine cabinet nearby, and pulled out a bottle. He poured himself half a glass, took a slow sip, then looked at me with a calm, unreadable gaze. “Tiffany, tell me what kind of man do you think your husband i9”
“A living, breathing male,” I replied dryly.
That actually made him laugh. “You’ve gotten a lot more talkative lately, he said with a hint of amusement. “And more
sarcastic too.”
That’s because life hasn’t gone the way I wanted.” I said calmly. “And I’m done suppressing who I am. If someone crosses me. I’ll push back. I didn’t bother putting on a front for Shawn anymore. Back then. I was always afraid that speaking like this would make him see me as being difhrult–ruining the soft, gentle image I thought he wanted
“Well, a woman with a bit of fire is more attractive, Shawn said with a nod
I tightened my grip on the cutlery, let out a cold laugh, and said, “So Queena must be oozing charm then, huh?”
Shawn looked at me without saying a word, took another sip of his wine, and then said, “Why compare yourself to her? Queena’s too full of herself. Sure, she’s competent, but being that sharp all the time makes people uncomfortable.”
1 let out a quiet laugh. “So that’s it–men like women they can keep on a leash. But the moment she steps out of line. you call it a flaw and use it against her”
“Tiffany, if it’s the truth you want, then I’ll give it to you,” Shawn said, his eyes locked on mine. “Ever since Queena joined the company, there’ve been whispers about us. I won’t deny it–on paper, we seem like a good match. Same background, similar abilities, and she’s attractive. That’s why, to a lot of people, it was easy to forget I already had a wife at home. He paused, his tone softening. Tiffany, I’m sorry–for all the times I made you feel invisible.”
There’s no need to apologize. It was my fault,” I said calmly, cutting off his guilt before it grew.
But Shawn shook his head. “No, it was on me. If I had just thought about your feelings–if I’d stepped up and shut those rumors down when they first started–you wouldn’t have felt the need to compete with Queena at every turn. I was supposed to be your shield. Tiffany. Instead, I ended up hurting you
“Challenges help people grow–there’s nothing wrong with that, said, lifting my gaze to meet his. “But as for your leaky umbrella, you can pass it on to someone else next time. At least that way, I won’t be the one left standing in the rain.”
Shawn didn’t say a word. He just fell silent, my words hanging heavy in the air.
I went on. “It was Queena’s presence that started to undermine your authority in the company, wasn’t it? That’s why you wanted her gone
Shawn looked surprised that I’d seen through him so easily. After a brief pause, he gave a small nod. “Yeah. I gave her a generous severance, and she said she’s planning to keep the baby.”
“Seriously? She’s not even married, and she’s keeping the baby?” I asked, surprised. In my previous life, Queena had coldly chosen to end the pregnancy. But this time, she’d made a completely different choice.
“She told me that’s what she wanted. I don’t know if she’ll follow through, and honestly, I’m not going to stick around to find out,” Shawn said, finishing the last of his wine before standing up. Tm heading back to the office now. Safe travels.”
I watched as Shawn walked to the entryway to change his shoes, then called out, “Wait.”
He paused by the door, turning back with a flicker of hope in his eyes–probably thinking I was going to give him a goodbye kiss or say something sentimental. Instead, I picked up the leftover food containers and handed them to him. “Take out the
trash
Shawn’s expression froze for a second, but he still took the trash. When he shut the door behind him, it closed with a little more force than necessary.

Maybe that’s the thing–once you stop depending on a man, he just becomes another part of life. Useful when needed, irrelevant when not, but you must never try to please them.
Early in the afternoon, just as I was getting ready to leave for the airport, my phone rang–it was Queena.
The very woman who had made half of my previous life a living hell was now stepping off the stage in this one, not with a dramatic finale, but with a quiet, pitiful exit.
Her voice on the other end carried a hint of resentment. Tiffany, I’m resigning You must be thrilled. You got Shawn to fire me, didn’t you?”
I could hear the accusation laced in her tone, but I wasn’t about to let her pin this on me. “Sorry to disappoint, but I had no idea you resigned. Shawn just happened to mention it when he dropped off hunch”
My casual remark must’ve hit a nerve–there was a pause on her end, just a few seconds of silence that said more than words could. Then Queena finally spoke, her voice tinged with a rare vulnerability. The timing of this pregnancy… it’s just all wrong. I do like Shawn. I wanted the baby to be his. But life always throws in a few turns you can’t dodge, no matter how much you want to.
I let out a cold laugh. “You say you love my husband, yet you slept with another man and got pregnant. Queena, do you even hear how absurd that sounds coming out of your mouth?”
She laughed too–but not with guilt or shame. Her voice was calm, even smug. Tiffany, just because you’re the type to stick with one man for life doesn’t mean I am. I’m a hunter, not a prey like you. Men, to me, are tools, not treasures. I never needed to play the innocent card to attract Shawn. I’ve always known that a woman’s greatest value to a man is her mind. When two sharp minds meet, that’s when real sparks fly.” Her tone turned icy. “But you? You only know how to give in, how to cry, how to make yourself look pitiful. That’s why I never saw you as competition. It’s not that I didn’t see you clearly–it’s that there was nothing worth seeing
