I almost got dragged into his mess. The words hit me like a cold splash of water. I snapped out of it and said, “Of course not. You don’t want a boy, but I do. Just not with you.”
It stung him. I saw his chest rise and fall as his breathing became shallow. He was trying to stay calm.
“Tiffany, who exactly are you trying to kill with that mouth?” His voice cracked under the strain. With a swift motion, he grabbed his jacket and stormed out.
I stood there, watching the fury explode. A strange satisfaction bubbled up inside me.
So, Shawn wasn’t some stoic machine. He had a temper.
I’d struck a nerve again. I thought–just maybe–the divorce was finally in the cards.
The next day, Shawn called me for lunch. Said he wanted to introduce me to someone.

I assumed it was a hotel associate. But when I walked in, I saw a sleek couple sitting at the table, chatting effortlessly.
There was something refined about them–like they were born with style. My mind clicked into place. They had to be from Sylvania, Only Sylvania people had that kind of attention to detail. Even their accessories were flawless.
“Mr. Hartwell!” The woman rose instantly, a smile lighting up her face as we approached
I glanced at Shawn, confused.
Without missing a beat, he reached for me, pulling me close. “This is my wife, Tiffany,” he said, his voice steady.
The woman’s smile was warm. “Hi, Mrs. Hartwell. I’m Amy. This is my husband, Atlas. Starting tomorrow, I’ll officially be part of the team. Mr. Hartwell, I’m excited to work with you.
I turned to Shawn, surprised. His fingers gave my waist a reassuring tap, as if telling me to stay calm.
Atlas stood, extending a hand to Shawn. “My wife’s always admired your company’s culture. She’s lucky to join your team. I’m thrilled for her”
In an instant, I slipped into business mode, the professional smile already in place.
I picked up my glass of water and finally understood what Shawn was doing.
Was this his way of easing my worries?
He had purposely introducing me to his new VP, making sure I knew she was married. That she had a loving husband by her side. That her work environment would be respectful and professional. It all clicked. He was telling me, Don’t worry. He’s not going to get caught up in office drama.

I’m a married woman too, so I understand. Married women play harder than single ones.
Amy was talkative, but her husband, Atlas, was quiet. Shawn and her discussed work, and then he mentioned that I managed the Apex Hotel. Amy’s gaze shot to me, surprise flashing in her eyes.
“You have your own career, Mrs. Hartwell?” she asked, clearly stunned. “I thought, with a husband like Mr. Hartwell, you’d be living the high life at home.” She smiled.
Shawn glanced at me, his expression softening just a bit. “I’d hoped she’d stay home, take care of our child,” he said, his tone
warm.

Atlas reached over, lightly brushing Amy’s hand. “My wife and I are planning to stay child–free,” he said, his voice calm.
Amy nodded. “Yeah, kids are cute, but we want to enjoy our lives,” she said.
In
my past life, I would have thought it was a waste–good genes, good life, and no kids.
But now, I understood their choice.
Shawn nodded along. He was the type of man with tolerance, never fixating on superficial things. He was gentle, elegant, sharp–but, as he’d said, he cared about the quality of his partners over quantity.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t the kind of woman he sought. We didn’t have that connection.
I rested my chin in my hand, watching Shawn. In my past life, I hated him. But in this life, I didn’t want to. I had fallen. behind. I had to accept my own part in it. I couldn’t stand on some moral high ground and accuse him. All I wanted was to be
r stranger. He could continue his bright path, and I’d find my own. We’ll just stop crossing paths, that’s all.
a familiar
Shawn noticed my distant look. Suddenly, his hand was in my hair, fingers brushing through it. “Full yet?” he asked, his voice Jlow.
I nodded and stood up. Tm going to the bathroom,” I said, walking away.
The restroom was down a long hallway. As I washed my hands, I felt a presence behind me.
The cool, minty scent of Shawn’s cologne wrapped around me. My body tensed.
“Tiffany, I just realized…” He leaned in, his lips grazing the back of my neck. “Taking you out like this is kind of….
“Stop acting like this here. It’s not good if someone sees,” I said, shoving him away, quickly washing my hands.
He stepped back, a little deflated. His voice dropped a notch.
“Can I take you everywhere with me from now on?” he asked softly.
