“Did your family agree to you giving me shares?” I wasn’t really worried about Shawn changing his mind, but the thought of dealing with my mother–in–law and sister–in–law over shares in a divorce was enough to make me uneasy. They’d cause a
This is my decision. I don’t need anyone’s approval, Shawn said, his voice firm, cutting through the tension.
“Okay, you have a deal I wasn’t going to waste time arguing. Six months–I could wait.
Shawn’s expression softened shghtly, the tension easing from his face as though a weight had been lifted. After dropping me off at my destination, he didn’t say another word before driving off.
I looked over at the Apex Hotel across the street. The exterior was nearly done, the fresh coat of paint and sleek design making it stand out. I could tell Shawn’s plan was to keep the management in my hands, despite everything. That meant we’d still cross paths professionally, whether I liked it or not.
I didn’t understand how some people could just walk away from their marriages without a second thought. Well, maybe it was a novel thing. It wasn’t that simple for me. Cutting ties with Shawn was no small thing
Our lives were too entwined–relationships, money, connections, and careers. Trying to untangle that would leave me adrift, uncertain of what to do next.
I had to keep moving forward. No point in turning my back on the money. Divorce wouldn’t change much, right? Even if I still worked with Shawn, I could handle it. I could date anyone I wanted. He wouldn’t have a say in it.
And if he found someone new? I’d pretend I hadn’t noticed. Let him have his perfect little family.
Yuna–spoiled, coddled, and used to getting whatever she wanted–had become insufferably entitled. If the Hartwell family had other children, maybe she wouldn’t have been so insufferable. Maybe her life would’ve been different.
Night settled over the city as I finished my work and headed back to my apartment. I didn’t expect any surprises. But then the doorbell rang, and Susanna stood in the doorway.
She came alone. The moment she walked in, I could tell something was wrong. Her face was tight, a frown pulling at the corners of her mouth.
“Yuna told me you’ve been staying here and not going back to the villa. Tiffany, tell me the truth–has something happened. between you and Shawn?” she asked, sitting down on the couch. I handed her a glass of water, and she stared at me, her gaze serious, demanding an answer.
I took a breath. It was time to stop pretending. “Yes. Our relationship has faded”
“Is it because of that Queena? I told Shawn to fire her. Why are you still making a fuss?” Susanna’s voice spiked, thick with emotion “Tiffany, let me tell you something. Shawn’s a model husband. No bad habits. No strange preferences. He’s good- looking, and his manners? Top–notch. What exactly do you think is wrong with him?”
I knew how this would go. In Susanna’s eyes, Shawn could do no wrong. He was the perfect son, the perfect husband-
untouchable.
“Susanna, calm down. Have some water,” I said, keeping my voice cool.
“Tiffany, stop fixating on his small mistakes. Co out, look at other husbands. Are any of them even half as good as Shawn? None would be as loyal. None would be as good–looking, or as capable. He spoils Yuna, sure, but he doesn’t neglect discipline just because she’s his daughter. He treats you like a queen. The life you’re living? It’s what other women dream of.” Susanna was worked up now, her tone harsh, like I was the one being ungrateful and stubborn.
“Susanna, I know all of this already,” I replied, my words flat.
“Yeah, right,” she snapped. “You only focus on Shawn’s little mistakes. You’ve been married for years, yet you’re still searching for love like it’s some kind of mental nourishment? Shawn’s busy. Where is he supposed to find the time for all this love? You

“Could I go find a boyfriend too?” I wasn’t angry anymore. I said it with a smile, teasing.

The water Susanna had just sipped shot right out of her mouth. She glared at me, her eyes full of resentment. “Look at you. Blaming Shawn for flirting with Queena, huh? Thinking about getting hark at him the same way? Alright then. Come here. Tell me, which handsome guy are you after? Ill go arrange a match for you.”
I knew Susanna was a character, but this? This was on a whole other level.
Her way of handling things was absurd–yet it was hard not to find it both frustrating and amusing.
“What’s his name? Is he as handsome as Shawn? Does he have Shawn’s career? You want to start a relationship with him? Don’t let yourself get played, Susanna said, her voice suddenly serious, as if lecturing me.
I paused, instantly more cautious. I shook my head. “No, Susanna, I was just joking. But sometimes, divorce isn’t just about cheating. It’s about personality clashes, values that don’t align.”
“Is there something wrong with my son’s values? He’s a good man. Kind, gentle. And about the cheating–I asked him. He says there was no real progress. And that Queena She’s something else. While she was flirting with Shawn, she ended up pregnant with someone else’s kid. If you want to go after that homewrecker, by all means, be my guest, but you’ve got to give Shawn a chance. Susanna’s voice turned cold when she mentioned Queena, her teeth grinding together in disgust.
