Chapter 164 Good Parents

Finished

I thought back to my past life. My parents had tried to warn me, too. They said not to take love so seriously, not to let it control me. They told me that if Shawn wanted a divorce, I should let him go. But back then, I was stubborn. I believed he would come around. That he’d change his mind. I refused to let go

Now, things were different. I’d finally come around to my folks way of thinking. With their support, I felt stronger. Like I could take on the world’s flaws

Alright, Dad, Mom, sorry for making you two worry so much and coming all the way out here, I said, forcing a smile to ease their concern. Don’t worry. I haven’t lost my mind. I’ve thought this through carefully. This isn’t some rash decision, and I’m not trying to use a divorce to get back at anyone.”

When they heard this, the tension in their faces softened

Several messages from Hazel lit up the screen, each one full of venom. Insults. Calling me worthless

I snapped. Without thinking, I took screenshots of every message and sent them all to Shawn

I wanted him to see just how talented his sister really was

A few moments later. Shawn called. I picked up the phone, turning to my parents. I’m going outside to take this call,I said. giving them a reassuring smile

Their eyes followed me, full of worry. I gave them a calm nod before stepping into the hallway

I answered the call. Shawn’s voice came through, hoarse. My sister’s young. She doesn’t understand things well. What she said it was just out of anger. Don’t take it to heart”

I couldn’t believe it. I was done coddling him. Shawn,” I cut in, my voice sharp, you always say she’s young and doesn’t know any better. How has she made it through the last 20 years then? She went to college, but she can’t even tell right from wrong? How much older does she need to be before she gets it

There was silence on the other end. My words hung in the air

After a long pause, he finally spoke. His voice rough, almost strained. I’m sorry. I’ll make sure to control her behavior. It’s my fault. I didn’t teach her properly.”

Hazel’s socalled straightforwardness? It was just her picking targets

I’d never seen her act so sarcastic with anyone else. Of course, she thought she could get away with it with me. And she never have to face the consequences

That’s just how people are

Shawn was stuck in the middle again, but I didn’t feel sorry for him

Shawn,” I said firmly. I hope this is the last time. If she insults me again, I’ll fight back. And when my anger takes over, no one will walk away happyWith that, hung up

I walked back into the room. My parents had been whispering to each other, but they fell silent when I stepped inside

I knew my parents were still worried about me. As parents, who wouldn’t want their child to have a happy, peaceful family life? It was a universal wish

But life, like the moon, had its phases. Nothing was perfect

Sorry, Dad, Mom. I know I haven’t handled things well, and now I got you worried about me when you should be living life in peace. The weight of guilt settled in. They were getting older, and I couldn’t give them the peace they deserved

divorce. Yuna will go to the Hartwells, right?”

Finished

Without missing a beat, Dad spoke up. If you get custody, your mother and I talked it over. She could retire early and help you raise her.”

No need,I said quickly, cutting him off. There was no way I’d burden them more. This was my problem, not theirs. Dad, Mom, I don’t want the child. Let her stay with the Hartwells. They can give her a better life.”

Mom nodded in agreement, a look of understanding crossing her face. That’s true. Our family’s not bad, but we can’t compare to the Hartwells. Shawn’s company is massive, and he’s still young. Who knows how far he’ll go?”

I could feel the warmth in my mom’s words. It was clear she admired Shawn. Her tone told me everything

Mom,I said calmly, my expression steady, no matter how big his career gets, it’s no longer my concern. What I’m focusing on now is building my own career and taking care of you two.”

Their faces lit up with pride. A’smile crossed my lips, feeling like I hadn’t let them down

That night, my parents stayed over at the apartment

Since my call with Shawn, Hazel’s cruel messages had stopped

I understood why Hazel had disrespected me. She didn’t face any consequences. The Hartwellselders or Shawn might get upset, but all they did was scold her

She had been pampered her whole life, so even the harshest words didn’t faze her. It was all empty noise to her

But now, Hazel had stayed quiet. I believed Shawn had finally done something about it

In my past life, I had endured it all. That endurance had brought peace between my aunt and sisterinlaw, and between my motherinlaw and me

Would this life be different? Would my actions shake those same foundations

I knew Susanna’s temper. As long as I kept my head down, focused on being a good housewife, respected her, and answered when she needed me, she wouldn’t give me trouble
