Chapter 171 Impotent Army

Susanna’s face twisted in disbelief, her eyebrows shooting up in shock

Finished

Ugh. Tiffany, you really need to think about this family, the bigger picture,” she said, her tone carrying the weight of someone trying to take the moral high ground after Id cut deep with my words

I casually picked up my fork, took a bite, and glanced at her, unimpressed. You want me to think about the bigger picture because you’re not in my spot. And anyone who says they’re doing something for your good is probably looking out for themselves. Just like how my motherinlaw’s probably giving you all some favors, right?”

Her face flushed crimson. Tiffany, show some respect to your elders,” she snapped, her voice sharp, betraying her anger

I shrugged, unbothered. Don’t try to guilttrip people. You’re going to get your head smashed in.”

The room fell deathly quiet. Susanna’s face was a dark shade of red, her teeth clenched in fury. Tiffany, what’s with that attitude? I brought these relatives in to say some nice words to you, and you won’t even listen. But you’re cursing us? Do you really think being my family’s daughterinlaw means you can do anything you want?”

She finally erupted, her voice sharp as glass. I leaned back in my chair, calm as ever. Susanna, they’re not me. They haven’t lived through what I’ve been through. It’s easy for them to talk. But let me ask all of you thisdo you really think your marriage is so perfect?”

A hush fell over the room. Even Susanna seemed to choke on her words, her face paling

I saw the recognition in her eyes. She knew exactly what her husband was like

If it’s so great,” I pressed on, then tell me, what’s so great about marriage! I’ll listen. But don’t feed me any fake answers. I can tell when someone’s lying

Before she could respond, one of the women at the table picked up her fork with a clang. Come on, everyone, try the meat. It’s better than what our housekeeper makes

Everyone’s focus immediately shifted to the food, as if a switch had been flipped. Susanna, however, looked like she was about to explode, her frustration bubbling up beneath the surface, her face a storm of irritation

Once I finished eating. I excused myself. Susanna didn’t try to stop me. As I walked out, a rush of relief washed over me. It turned out, a little confrontation was exactly what I needed to shake off the anxiety and frustration

I knew my behavior at the table had completely shattered my good girl image. As I walked out of the private room, I was no longer the sweet, obedient daughterinlaw. No, people would now call me sharptongued, the one who didn’t hold her tongue

I never expected my little outburst to travel so fast, but by eight o’clock, Shawn called

I heard him chuckling on the other end. I was confused, listening as he laughed. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore. Are you done laughing? What’s going on?”

Shawn finally quieted, the laughter fading from his voice. Did you really manage to cross my mom and her circle of friends?I raised an eyebrow, surprised. How do you know about that?”

He sighed deeply. My mom’s about to lose it. She’s ranting to her old friends, and I can hear every word

I couldn’t help but let out a bitter laugh. “I’ve upset her that much, and you’re not even angry?I was honestly taken aback. When had Shawn become so detached? In the past, if I so much as disagreed with Susanna, he’d always ask me to be more understanding because she was older

Now, it was like everything had flipped

I’m not interested in any moral lectures. Let’s just hang up,” I said flatly, my patience thin

Tiffany.Shawn’s voice softened. Before, you’d hold back, always trying to please me. I thought you were just a pretty face, a quiet woman. But now? There’s so much more to you. You’re interesting. You’re alive in ways I never saw before.”

And what exactly does that mean?I asked, my tone colder now

Shawn hesitated, his words faltering. Then he sighed, his voice gentler. Do I need to spell it out? I think I’m more attracted to you than I’ve ever been. You’re not who I thought you were. You’ve changed, and it’s a good change. You’re glowing now, like a completely different woman.”

I let out a sharp, mocking laugh. Oh, so now you’re noticing? Is it because I don’t belong to you anymore that you’re seeing me clearly? How am I supposed to take that?”

Shawn seemed caught off guard, almost as if I’d peeled back something he didn’t want exposed. He laughed awkwardly. trying to brush it off. I know you put up with a lot before this. Now, I’m giving you the chance to turn the tables. Go ahead, make me regret it. How does that sound?”

I hadn’t expected him to take my jabs so lightly. He wasn’t angry. He wasn’t upset. Instead, he was flirting with me, as if he’d been coached in the art of charm. I couldn’t help but think that Queena had done a number on him. She’d taught him all the right tricks

I’m not interested in playing games, I said, keeping my voice steady. But you’ve changed too, haven’t you? You noticed that, right?”

Shawn’s tone firmed. I haven’t changed. I’m still me.”

No

you’re not. You weren’t like this before,I said calmly. I’m guessing it’s Ms. Tackman who’s been coaching you.”

At the mention of Queena’s name, Shawn tensed. His voice quickened with urgency. Tiffany, is it really that hard for you to move past the Queena thing? How many times do I have to say it? There’s nothing going on between us. Just because we work together and respect each other’s talents doesn’t mean it’s some affair or anything like that.”
