Chapter 182 Miscarriage

I laughed gently. “You’re handsome. A bit of rebelliousness surely won’t change how your family feels about you.”
“Everyone but my grandfather seems to dislike me, Jace admitted, sounding somewhat downcast.
“What about your parents?” I asked, immediately regretting it as I sensed I might have hit a sore spot.
“My dad left when I was seven, and my mom… she’s too caught up in her business to really care about me. It’s just been me and my grandfather, Jace’s voice faded towards the end.
“I’m sorry to hear that,” I responded, realizing I had inadvertently brought up painful memories.
“It’s okay, I’ll be graduating soon and then I can be independent, Jace replied, showing a resilience that surprised me.
“Your grandfather must be proud. Make sure you earn enough to look after him, I encouraged with a smile.
“Yeah, I plan to,” he affirmed. Glancing in the rearview mirror, I caught a glimpse of his deep, solitary expression that seemed too mature for his years.
My heart felt for him, thinking of how challenging it was growing up in a single–parent home.
That thought led me to think of Yuna. Post–divorce, I resolved to no longer involve myself in her life.
My thoughts were swirling as we returned to the underground parking garage of my building
As I stood by the trunk retrieving some items, Jace watched on.
Suddenly, something scurried over my foot, followed by a squeak.
My skin crawled, and almost on instinct, I looked for somewhere high to escape.
Caught off guard, I clambered onto Jace without a second thought.
Peacting just as instinctively, he lifted me with his strong arms, allowing me to cling to him.
Two little mice darted from the wall towards us. I had been terrified of such creatures since childhood. The parking garage was tight, and the mice, unable to find an exit quickly, scurried around
I trembled, holding onto Jace tightly like an octopus.
Jace laughed softly, effortlessly flicking a mouse away with his foot, then turned to me and asked, “Ms. Mayfield, are you afraid of mice?”
The garage was silent, and my heart only resumed its normal pace when I realized the awkwardness of lying on top of him.
Im sorry, I lost control,” I muttered, fixing my disheveled hair, grabbing my bags, and heading out.
Jace, still amused, followed and remarked, “It looks like the pest control here isn’t very effective. I’ll mention it to the property. management.
“Okay, thank you,” I mumbled, feeling too embarrassed to look at him.
Later that evening, around nine, the property manager came and reported about the incident. Apparently, an elderly lady from Granham had been raising chickens in her garage, which attracted the mice, and she had been instructed to clean up.
This confirmed that Jace had indeed spoken to the property management.
That night, Yuna unexpectedly messaged me, “Mommy, if I delete the photos I sent, can you still see them!”

“Oh, did you see every photo I uploaded, Mommy?” she followed up with a voice message.
I haven’t seen them all, I responded.
She went silent.

Yuna’s questions suggested she was also trying to avoid causing any issues, indicating she and Susanna wanted to keep this matter under wraps.
They were treating me as if I were oblivious.
As August approached, the hotel was gearing up to reopen, complicating things further. I hired two senior managers to assist. and even Shawn pitched in occasionally.
After a meeting, Amy asked when I was free, offering an invitation to her husband’s beauty salon for a treatment, seemingly eager to befriend me.
Women tend to be quite perceptive, often better at identifying deceptive behavior than men.
I have p grown more wary, scrutinizing intentions with a touch of suspicion.
Experience has taught me that sudden generosity often comes because someone sees value in you.
Amy’s knowledge of my pending divorce with Shawn might have piqued her curiosity. Is she seeking more details?
Yet, she is married herself, so it is not about any personal interest in Shawn. However, a woman can always create opportunities if she desires.
Once Shawn is officially single, it is inevitable that he will attract the attention of numerous women who will actively pursue
him.
I turned down Amy’s invitation. She appeared slightly disappointed but did not press further, simply suggesting we meet
whenever I was free.
While in the company restroom, I overheard a conversation outside about Queena.
“Ms. Tackman resigned because she went to Andorwood to have a child, but I heard from a friend that the stress led to a miscarriage. It’s unclear if she plans to return to the company.”
“It’s really unfortunate. She dedicated so much to the company, and yet, due to jealousy of a woman, she was pushed out.”
“Lower your voice, she’s in the building today. You wouldn’t want her to overhear you.”
