Chapter 190 She’s Your Daughter?

“I’ll grab us something to eat,” I said, dashing off to order from the vendor. The food was displayed in a freezer, and I quickly selected a few dishes.
Returning to the table, I noticed the nearby workers staring at me, my attire clearly out of sync with the casual vibe of the place.
Jace whispered apologetically, “Ms. Mayfield, I’m sorry for this. I promise to treat you to a nicer meal next time.
“Don’t worry about it,” I reassured him, pulling out my phone to review the property list Shawn had sent. Despite the humble setting, the potential of those real estate assets lifted my spirits.
Jace seemed uncomfortable in this setting. He repeatedly wiped the table with a napkin, looking out of place. When the vendor brought our food and accidentally spilled some soup, Jace’s frustration was evident.
“Just relax and enjoy the meal. It’s really quite good,” I encouraged him with a smile.
Jace nodded, picked up his fork, and began to eat quietly.
Midway through the meal, I glanced around and felt a sudden unease. “Eat up, we might need to leave soon. I think I just saw the car of one of your creditors.”
“Where?” Jace looked around anxiously.
“Over there.” I nodded towards a Sylvanian–registered car I had seen near our office before.
By the time Jace looked, the car had vanished.
“Sorry for causing you stress, Ms. Mayfield. These people really are a nuisance,” Jace murmured.
“It’s not just them I’m worried about. What if they actually tried to harm you? You’re still so young,” I expressed my concern.
“Why would they want to harm me? I’m not worth much,” Jace joked naively.
“Don’t underestimate yourself. With your looks, you could be very popular working in a club,” I teased.
Jace smiled, seeming less worried. “Ms. Mayfield, have you been to those clubs you mentioned? You seem to know a lot.”
“No, but I’ve heard plenty about them. Sylvania’s got some fancy places, you know. If you ever went, you’d likely be a hit.” While speaking, I angrily bit down on my fork, unable to bear the thought of Jace, dressed in a suit, being selected by someone inside such a place–it would deeply upset me.
Jace laughed softly, then quickly reassured me, “Don’t worry, Ms. Mayfield, I would never go to a place like that. But do you think I’m handsome?”
“Yes, very handsome.” I nodded in agreement.
“Compared to your husband… who’s better looking?” Jace suddenly asked, catching me off guard.
I nearly choked on my food, giving him a sharp look. “Why would you make such a comparison? Why measure someone I’ve grown so tired of against someone I’ve only just met? How could that even be a fair comparison?”
Jace found my reaction amusing and chuckled.
I sighed inwardly; handsome people always seem to have such charming laughs. It would be interesting to see Jace getting some attention from a wealthy lady.
After we finished eating, Jace eagerly went to pay the bill. He returned, astonished. “Only 50 dollars for three dishes? That’s really cheap!”

Inside the car, he took out an IOU, signed it, stamped his fingerprint on it in front of me, and handed it to me. “Ms. Mayfield, I really appreciate your help. I won’t forget this.”
“It’s no big deal, just make sure you focus on your studies once the summer is over,” I advised him as I tucked the IOU into
my purse.
“I will,” he assured me, his eyes bright with gratitude.
His earnest look somehow made the car feel warmer than usual, or perhaps it was just stuffy in there.
When I arrived at the office, I noticed Yuna sitting on the steps, clutching a doll I gave her years ago.
As Jace and I approached, she ran up to me. “Mommy, where have you been?”
Jace appeared surprised. “Ms. Mayfield, she’s your daughter?”
I nodded and then turned to Yuna. “Why are you here alone? Where’s your dad?”
Yuna mumbled, “I came by myself.”
“You should go back to your grandma’s. I have work and can’t look after you here,” I told her firmly.
“But Mommy, I won’t be any trouble. I’ll just sit quietly and play,” Yuna pleaded sensibly.
“That’s not possible. You’ll still be a distraction,” I replied sternly.
“Can I go to Gramps and Granny’s then? You used to take me there in the summers to fish with Gramps,” she asked, her eyes hopeful.
“You refused to see them last time, so not this time either,” I responded coldly.
Her eyes welled with tears. “I’m sorry,” she whispered.
Jace observed the interaction silently for a moment before heading off to work.
Yuna, doing her best to hold back tears, had grown less prone to outbursts than she used to be.
I called Shawn, and he quickly arranged for a driver to come pick her up.
