Susanna looked at Jace, who suddenly barged in with rising anger, as she said, “I’m disciplining this venomous woman. Don’t stick your nose in! Move aside.”
“I won’t let you hit her.” Jace’s entire presence turned oppressive, his voice cold as he spoke, “Touch her again and see what happens.”
Both Susanna and I were startled, because the sharp aura emanating from Jace wasn’t something an ordinary person could have–it felt like something only those steeped in power and influence would possess.
Susanna was actually intimidated by Jace. She said hatefully, “Tiffany, is this the lover you cheated with, huh? Figures he looks like the kind who lives off a woman! He must be your kept man.”
With that, Susanna stormed off in fury.
I took a step back with an ugly expression and collapsed into a chair.
Jace turned around and looked down at me. “Ms. Mayfield, your face is swollen. I’ll go get you some medicine.”
I watched Jace turn and run out. Some other people came in to check on me, but most of them were just here for the drama. After all, Susanna was Shawn’s mother. Her coming over to hit me showed that something was seriously wrong in my marriage with Shawn.
Whether I could stay here or not was now uncertain.
These people were all fence–sitters. I parachuted into this position as the top leader, and they were never convinced. Now that I might be stepping down, those few working under me all showed visible excitement on their faces.
When Jace came running back, he was panting and carrying a bunch of medicine. “Ms. Mayfield, take a look–see which of these you can use.”
I picked up an anti–inflammatory cream, squeezed some out, and applied it to my face. It was cool and masked the stinging pain.
“Sorry for the spectacle,” I said self–deprecatingly.
But Jace stared seriously at my reddened face and gritted his teeth. “What right does she have to hit you? That useless Shawn -how could he let her hit you?”
Hearing that, I suddenly laughed and looked at Jace. “Well said. He really is a useless man sometimes.”
Seeing that I could still laugh, Jace’s eyes reddened, and he said, “Don’t live like this anymore. Shawn isn’t the only man in the world. What’s the point of clinging to him?”
“Yeah, I know. You should go out first. Don’t let others misunderstand.” Thinking of how Susanna had viciously called Jace my kept man before she left, I didn’t want to drag an innocent person into this battlefield. Besides, Jace was still being chased by debt, barely able to protect himself.
“I’m not afraid of what people say,” Jace said softly.
“Yeah, I know you’re a kind kid. But I’m afraid.” I raised my hand slightly. “Go back to work.”
Only then did Jace turn and leave.
Around five, Shawn rushed in. I was leaning back in the office chair asleep, and when he forcefully pushed open the door, the noise woke me up.
“Let me see if it hurts.” Shawn suddenly bent down in front of me. While I was still dazed, he reached out and lightly touched my face. “I’m sorry. I didn’t expect my mom to come looking for you.”

“Either compensate or report it to the police–you decide.” I pointed toward the nearby security camera. “I’ve kept all the
evidence.”
Shawn’s face stiffened as if he’d been slapped.
I knew it wasn’t easy being stuck in the middle, but weren’t all these accumulated conflicts the result of his inaction?
“Tiffany, my mom hitting you was her fault. Can you consider her age and not call the police? You’ve suffered; I’ll compensate you, alright?” Shawn’s voice was hoarse, his whole demeanor weary. After pulling over a chair and sitting down, he bent over, head lowered, staring at the ground.
“I want one million. Will you give it?” I asked coldly.
“I’ll give you two million.” Shawn looked up at me and added, “I hope you won’t hold a grudge against my mom. She lost her
reason.”
“Shawn, now that it’s come to this, let’s speed up the divorce procedures. Your mom’s getting old and can’t handle the shock. You, as a filial son, should be thinking of her.” I calmly persuaded him.
“Tiffany, I … I don’t want to separate from you.” Shawn looked at me with red eyes. “I really don’t want to break up. This feeling is suffocating. I know clearly that the person I like most is you.”
“Stop lying to yourself. If you truly loved me, Queena wouldn’t exist.” I mocked him.
“When people live comfortably, greed always creeps in. I wronged you, Tiffany. I selfishly wanted to keep you tied to my side. As long as I didn’t agree to the divorce, you’d stay, even if we grew to resent each other. At least if I wanted to see you, you’d still be around.”
Shawn stared straight at me without blinking, the corners of his eyes gradually turning red. “Lately, you’ve become lively and interesting again. I realized that my selfishness was causing you harm. You once said flowers should bloom in the sunlight. Yes, you deserve to live a brilliant life.”
