Chapter 199 Why Don’t You Resign?
Even though I’d expected things to turn out like this, it didn’t stop the sting in my chest.
I tossed my phone onto the couch and sank into it, shutting my eyes as a wave of sorrow washed over me.
A few minutes later, the phone buzzed, signaling a new text.
I lazily reached for it and glanced at the screen–it was a message from Shawn, asking where I was.
I didn’t bother replying and let my eyes stay closed, choosing silence.
Shawn didn’t seem surprised by my lack of response. He left it alone, like he was used to it.

About 30 minutes later, I got up and headed downstairs. Most of the work had been wrapped up, and people were starting to leave.
Jace was still around when I showed up. As soon as he saw me, he rushed over. “You’ve had some drinks tonight, Ms. Mayfield,” he said quickly. “Do you want me to give you a ride home?*
“Yeah, thanks,” I said as I passed him the keys.
While Jace left to fetch the car, I stood by one of the columns near the entrance, resting my weight against it. The hotel was alive with lights and movement, buzzing with energy.
A moment later, Jace pulled up and opened the back door for me.
Just then, Shawn showed up unexpectedly and asked, “Leaving already?”
His tone was soft, and he looked straight at me.
“Yeah,” I replied without any emotion.

After a quick look at Jace, Shawn turned back to me and asked, “Mind if I go with you to the apartment?”
I shot him down without hesitation. “No. You should be with youkdaughter–she needs you more than I do.”
Without waiting for a reply, I slid into the car.
Shawn’s brow tightened, a flicker of disappointment crossing his otherwise striking features.
Once Jace shut the door behind me, he circled to the driver’s side and started the engine.
As we pulled away, I caught a glimpse of Shawn in the rearview mirror. He stood alone beneath the bright hotel lights, his figure still and quiet, as if silently saying goodbye.
I leaned into the seat, feeling a heavy weariness settle in, but I couldn’t let myself drift off–I wasn’t sure how experienced Jace. was behind the wheel, so I stayed awake to keep an eye on the road.

I took a shower, and then scrolled through online reviews of the hotel. I also invited a few well–known bloggers to visit and do
a detailed write–up on the hotel’s different themes. I noticed quite a number of positive comments underneath.
The initial renovation work at the hotel was done, and now it was time to officially open for business.
To Shawn, managing two hotels wasn’t anything major–he wouldn’t waste extra energy on them. What I didn’t expect, though, was for Susanna to suddenly take an interest.
Things between us had already fallen apart. Our divorce was set in stone, and there was no turning back.
Now that Susanna had Queena as a more suitable daughter–in–law candidate, she couldn’t wait for me to cut ties with Shawn.
The following day, during a meeting, I caught a few people voicing their disagreement with me staying in charge of the hotels. These voices were all linked to Susanna, but after Shawn shut them down, the meeting came to a close. Right after, the senior executives pulled me aside and said, “Ms. Mayfield, we need to go over a few things with you.”
I turned to face the senior figures in the company before quickly glancing at Shawn.
He remained seated at the head of the table, his pen twirling endlessly between his long fingers. His face was tense, deep in thought
I paused, standing still until everyone else had left. One of them quietly shut the door to the meeting room behind them.
“Shawn, we’re aware of your divorce. Even though she’s just started getting involved in the company, now that you’ve made the decision, it’s best for her to stay out of company matters. It wouldn’t be good for either of you.”
That’s right, Ms. Mayfield, we have no doubts about your skills. It’s just that a divorce is a significant matter, and if you remain in the company, there might be gossip. That could negatively affect your reputation.”
“Ms. Mayfield, why don’t you consider resigning for now? Once your divorce is final and all your assets and ties are fully separated, you can reapply to the company. This way, there will be no room for any gossip.”
