Chapter 205 Sign the Papers
Shawn sat quietly in my office, the signed papers between us.
Finished
“You’ve signed. Now you can go get the divorce certificate,” he said, his voice low, his eyes lingering on the pen beside me. There was something unreadable in his gaze–resentment, perhaps, or maybe something else I couldn’t identify.
I’d had the lawyer go over everything, ensuring there were no surprises. Satisfied, I took the pen and signed my name with a decisive stroke.
Shawn’s eyes didn’t leave the paper. He exhaled slowly, a soft sound of frustration escaping him.
Once the paperwork was done, we headed to the city hall. The moment we stepped outside, the sky darkened, and rai to pour, trapping us in the downpour.
The city hall’s pale walls were emblazoned with slogans, all proclaiming the beauty of marriage.
I glanced down at the divorce certificate in my hand, a bitter smile tugging at my lips.
Shawn’s driver hurried toward us, holding a large black umbrella. “Mr. Hartwell, there’s only one umbrella,” he said.
Shawn nodded, taking the umbrella. “Wait in the car for me.”
The driver gave me a quick look before turning away, heading toward the car.
Shawn opened the umbrella, his gaze meeting mine. “Let me walk you to the car.”
I glanced at the torrential rain, then nodded. “Thank you.”
As I took a step forward, Shawn’s tall frame pressed closer to mine. The rain fell in sheets, the sound of it battering the umbrella loud and constant. The ground near the entrance had turned into a rushing river, and my heels were quickly soaked. My steps slowed as I struggled to keep my footing.

Without a word, Shawn’s arm wrapped around my shoulder, pulling me into his chest. I froze, caught off guard. Then, his arms tightened around me, and he bent down, brushing his lips against my forehead. “Tiffany… is it really over?”
The rain kept falling, relentless and steady, the umbrella shaking with each drop. His lips were cool against my skin, a stark contrast to the warmth of his embrace.
“Yes, it’s over,” I whispered. The finality of it settled in–this chapter of my life, over.
Shawn’s grip tightened, his voice thick with emotion. “Can we still be friends?”
The question made me want to laugh. Friends? After everything? The idea felt almost absurd.
“Let’s not meet again if we don’t have to,” I replied, my voice cold.
Shawn stiffened, the impact of my words landing hard. Without another glance, I stepped out from under his umbrella, walking quickly into the rain.
The rain came down in sheets, quickly soaking through my dress and long hair.
I didn’t mind. The storm didn’t scare me. Thad learned to grow stronger.
wn stood beneath the umbrella, watching silently as I climbed into the car.
I changed out of my heels and into a pair of flats, then gripped the steering wheel. The car turning smoothly as I drove off. disappearing into the downpour.
Shawn had given me a large sum of money. I needed to use it wisely. The housing market wasn’t out of control just yet. There

I wasn’t sure about starting a business or diving into big investments just yet. For now, real estate seemed like the best choice. It had been the most lucrative industry recently.
There was a lot of work to do, I decided to set aside a portion of the money for my parents‘ retirement. I others thought. My brother’s future was just as important to me.
I didn’t care what
I had already talked to my parents about the divorce. They never once asked how much I got. It was their way of showing respect, and I appreciated it. I was lucky to have such open–minded parents.
Three days after the divorce, I decided to take a break. A week off in Craneport,
But something had been gnawing at me.
Jace had asked for two days off, then three more. Now, it was the fifth day, and his phone was off.
A knot twisted in my stomach. I thought about the people chasing him for his debts.
Was he okay? Had something happened?
I remembered Melanie’s cousin worked at the police station. I asked her to check into it- -see if Jace had run into trouble. Maybe he was mixed up with some dangerous people or something bad had happened.
Melanie promised to let me know as soon as she had any news
1 remembered the last time I was in Craneport, I had run into Jace. Since I was going back there to rest, I thought I might as well search for him.
I never expected to worry about Jace. He had always been so genuine. I had hoped for a better future for him, free from the weight of his family’s debts and the constant pressure on his shoulders.
Shawn approved my time off without hesitation. He called me, asking. “Are you going back to see your parents?”
“No.” I said quietly. Tm just getting away for a while.”
“On. Where are
ou going?” he asked, surprised, as if he assumed I’d be going home to visit my family.
Before Hanzora, my hometown had always been my favorite place.
“Sorry, I’d prefer to keep it private,” I said, not wanting Shawn to dig too deep into my personal life.
