He wore a crisp white shirt, the fabric draping effortlessly over his lean frame. There was a lazy, almost regal air to him, as if elegance flowed naturally through his veins. A sea–blue diamond stud gleamed in his left ear, an understated mark of wealth. It added to the nobility that seemed to settle between his brows, giving him an aura of quiet authority
I quickly fumbled through my bag, pulling out a sunhat and placing it on my head. I didn’t want them to recognize me.
“Yeah, had my fun. Time to get back to work, Jace’s voice floated over to me, smooth and easy.
“Mr. Jace, you really go out of your way to make life hard on yourself. Who’s out there that you can’t forget?” The teasing tone came from another man, his curiosity almost too obvious.
Jace shrugged, a casual movement that spoke volumes. “She’s someone important to me.”
Then, from the side, a girl, walking the furthest from Jace, leaned in close and whispered with a grin, “Henry might break your legs if you get a girlfriend.”
I was still listening, trying to keep my distance when, without warning, I bumped into someone.
The man, noticing me, let out a loud, exaggerated gasp. Without a second thought, he tossed his thermos to the floor. “Hey, lady! You broke my cup! What are you going to do about that?”
The thermos crashed to the ground with a sharp sound, shattering into pieces. The noise echoed through the air, startling everyone nearby.
I froze. Even jace and his group, once walking ahead, stopped and turned to look.
I tried to hide, but it was too late. The two middie–aged men were already closing in, their intentions clear.
I looked over at Jace, hoping for some kind of help.
And, of course, our eyes met. He stopped dead in his tracks, his expression unreadable.
The two men grinned, their eyes glinting with amusement as they focused on me. “Lady, I know you didn’t mean it, but this thermos means a lot to me. It was a gift from my mom.”
“How much? I’ll pay for it,” I offered, wanting to put an end to this quickly.

them.
Jace turned to me, still holding the remaining 50 dollars in his hand. “Ms. Mayfield, what are you doing here?”
I took the money, tucked it into my wallet; and spoke with an icy edge. “Thanks for getting me out of that mess.”
