Chapter 17
The operation was over quickly. Too quickly.
When I woke up, the lights were too bright, the sheets smelled too clean, and the room was too quiet–until I saw Leroy sitting beside me, his jacket wrinkled like he’d been pacing for hours.
“Leroy…” My throat was dry as sand. “There are two rings in my bag. Can you return them to Godfrey?”
His brows furrowed, but he didn’t question it. Just nodded once and left the room like a silent shadow.
Those rings? They meant nothing. He’d picked them out completely distracted, probably imagining Jillian instead of mine.

Zoe slipped into the room with a scowl already on her face. “Yolanda, listen to me. Alpha Godfrey isn’t worth it.”
I knew that she had deliberately revealed the news of my pregnancy to Leroy.
I gave her a tired smile. She didn’t know it yet, but I’d already made peace with it. Sort of.
She still believed this whole mess was because of Jillian. Like, if Jillian vanished tomorrow, Godfrey and I would suddenly have fallen in love again.
But she didn’t know they had already held a wedding.
She didn’t know how many times he’d left my heart bleeding while chasing after that

fragile little human.
At least… she didn’t know until now.
Leroy sent her a video.
Zoe didn’t hesitate–just pulled out her phone and hit play.
In the video, Godfrey was holding Jillian like she was his last breath. Both of them were crying so hard it was hard to tell who was comforting who.
“I don’t want to stay in the hospital anymore,” she sobbed. “It’s stuffy. I hate it.”
Godfrey said, “Okay,” like that one word could fix the world.
“I want to see the world… to” Her voice cracked into sobs.

And the mighty Alpha Godfrey? Closed his eyes. Let the tears fall.
I gagged a little in my throat.
“Star–crossed lovers,” Zoe muttered with a roll of her eyes. “More like emotionally constipated mutts.”
After my observation period ended, Leroy and Zoe came to take me home.
Just as we got into the car, guess who showed up like a bad smell?
Yep. Alpha Godfrey.
He held that little velvet ring box like it was supposed to make everything okay. His eyes were hollow, like he hadn’t slept, eatenin days.

“Yolanda,” he rasped, “did you really abort our pup?”
Zoe’s nostrils flared. “Oh, don’t you dare play the heartbroken father card now.”
I tilted my head. “Where’s Jillian? Isn’t it her nap time?”
He didn’t answer. Of course not.
I smiled, baring a little fang. “If you’re really so devoted, then go jump off a cliff with her. Just don’t come crawling back to me.”
Crack. His expression split wide open, and out poured the guilt, the sorrow, the pathetic regret.
His eyes were bloodshot. Not from shifting. Just crying. What a waste of a wolf’s tear

ducts.
I didn’t say another word. My lower abdomen hurt terribly. Even breathing had to be done carefully.
Zoe was furious and started cursing.
“You have to clear out your damn heart
before inviting anyone else in! Why is that so hard to understand?!”
“Yolanda stayed with you for seven years, you idiot! Jillian left you, and now you’re acting like she’s the moon goddess herself!”
“All of Yolanda’s love? You flushed it down the drain like expired meat!”
Godfrey didn’t say a word. Not even a growl.
Zoe was about to slam the car door shut, but

his hand caught it.
“Yolanda,” he pleaded, “she’ll be gone from our lives.”
Zoe snorted. “You just promised to take her on a worldwide love tour five minutes ago, didn’t you? What’s next? A moonlit cruise?”
“You can’t have it both ways, Godfrey. You’re not that charming.”
“I’m shutting the door now,” she added sweetly. “If you lose a paw, don’t expect sympathy.”
He still didn’t move.
Leroy got out from the driver’s seat, sighing like a battle–weary beta. “Just leave now. What you did is really despicable. Don’t force me to punch you, buddy.”

Still, Godfrey didn’t flinch. He just looked at me with those pleading, stupidly loyal eyes.
“Yolanda… the things I said earlier, it was just to comfort her. I’ll end it. I’ll make everything right.”
Then he opened the ring box again and held out the smaller one. “Let’s go back, We can still get married. We can have another pup…”
Leroy started prying his fingers off the door one by one.
Godfrey’s mouth moved, but no sound came out. Just a silent cry. Maybe even he couldn’t convince himself anymore.
The car rolled forward.
I looked back.

He was still standing there, frozen in place like a statue sculpted out of regret.
He knew the moment he abandoned me, he was burning every bridge behind him.
Now he stood in the ashes, pretending to be a martyr.
Zoe leaned back with a scoff. “What a damn poser.”
