Chapter 6
I quickly got up and hid in a small corner, listening closely.
“Son, what did Lena say?” My mother–in–law’s eyes gleamed with greed.
“Lena said these kinds of investments are fake and advised us not to get involved.”
Nick Herty seemed a little regretful for putting all his money into Lena’s hands, thinking that if he hadn’t, he wouldn’t be in the position of having to beg her for money
now.
“I checked online, and what Aunt Lena said is right. These are usually scams. We should stick to the original plan.”

My son, educated and more knowledgeable, trusted Aunt Lena.
Nick Herty, who had still been wavering, was finally convinced by our son’s reasoning and let go of the idea.
“Alright, we’ll stick to the original plan. Too bad Lena got fired. Now we don’t have anyone to help us fake his death. Otherwise, we could say the investment failed and bring in the
debt collectors. She can mortgage her house and pay them back bit by bit.”
“Let’s do that! That little bitch has been holding onto the money for years without letting go. She married you, and her savings are our joint property. She should give it to us! She won’t even put her house in both our names, let alone give us a cent!”
My mother–in–law spat out in frustration.

I was shaking with fury!
That house was a gift from my parents before I married. When we got married, Nick Herty had no money to buy one, so we had been living in my house ever since.
So this whole charade was about my house and savings!
They had come up with a plan and were about to go back to their rooms to sleep.
Nick Herty stood up from the sofa, but suddenly, his vision blurred, and he collapsed back down onto it.
“Ow, son, what’s wrong with you?”
My mother–in–law and son quickly rushed to help Nick Herty, and I pretended to be getting

up to use the bathroom.
“What’s wrong, darling?” I asked, feigning concern.
“It’s nothing, just a little dizzy,” he muttered.
“Ah, could it be from staying up all night playing games? You’ve been overdoing it. You always think you’re still young, but look at you!” I continued, my voice dripping with
cern.
“Son can handle staying up, but you, at your age, should be more careful. How about I keep an eye on you from now on?” I added, sounding sweet and caring.
“Stop fussing over me. It’s just that I didn’t sleep well. Don’t keep bothering me, okay? Last time, I almost died from a stroke because of your nagging!” Nick Herty

braised pork with rice, and some cola chicken wings. How does that sound?”
“Fine,” he grumbled, clearly impatient. He stood up and went upstairs.
Watching his retreating figure, I turned and walked into the bathroom, sitting on the toilet, deep in thought.
Lately, Nick Herty had been complaining of dizziness, headaches, and fatigue.
e seemed perpetually tired, sleeping excessively, and lacking energy.

All these were signs of a stroke.
He thought it was just from staying up late, but what he didn’t realize was that he was already halfway in the grave.
He already had high blood pressure, and I

used to make sure he took his medication, but now that I no longer remind him, the medicine bottle had hardly been touched.
With his recent diet of high–salt, high–fat, and high–calorie foods, staying up late every night to watch games and play, and his emotional instability, it wasn’t just the fake death he wanted anymore.
I would make sure it became all too real.
So far, my plan for revenge had only just reached its halfway point.
