Chapter 8
The burly man didn’t buy it. “If you’re just pretending to write the agreement in front of me, what if you don’t actually divorce behind my back? No way, I don’t trust you.”
At that moment, my son spoke up, “Just go to the Civil Affairs Bureau. After a 30–day cooling–off period, you’ll be able to divorce.”
“Hmph, I don’t care what method you use. As long as you’re still married, I can come to you for the money.”
In an attempt to distance himself from me, Nick Herty stood up in front of the men and said he would go with me to the Civil Affairs Bureau.
The house my parents had left me was

considered my pre–marital property, and it had already been mortgaged to the loan sharks. Nick Herty and his family didn’t want it.
As for the other assets, Nick Herty hadn’t planned on giving me any. But the burly man kept watching, and if Nick didn’t agree to split the assets, it would be seen as deliberately hiding property, and they would go after him. The family had no choice but to split everything evenly.
mother–in–law hesitated, “But we still owe
money…”
”
I pretended to be shocked. “What? You guys owe money?”
“I… I invested and lost everything” Nick Herty stammered, not wanting me to know the
truth.

I almost burst into tears and cautiously asked, “So what now? What if we don’t divorce? We could just pay off the debt together!”
Seeing the men’s eyes shift back to him, Nick Herty gritted his teeth in pain.
“Divorce! We must divorce! I owe less than you, so we’ll each deal with our own debts. Don’t expect me to help you pay yours!”
Then, he turned and whispered to his mother.
“Mom, are you stupid? If she takes her share of the debt, we’ll have to give her part of the assets too. Let’s deal with this first, then we’ll figure out the rest!”
Finally, it was my son’s turn. He still had a year until he turned eighteen. I asked if he

wanted to come with me.
With a disdainful flick of his wrist, he pulled his hand out of mine. “You owe so much money, do you expect me to live a hard life with you? I’m not going with you. I’m staying with Dad.”
The moment he shoved me aside, my heart twisted with pain. I thought I had grown

Fine, you chose this path, so don’t regret it later.
During the thirty–day cooling–off period for our divorce, the big men came knocking several more times. Nick Herty, along with his mother and son, moved out in a hurry, leaving me behind in the empty house. I

learned from Lena’s social media that they had moved to her place.
The four of them still had the leisure to go out for meals together.
I stood there, watching the now barren house they had stripped of everything, and finally, I couldn’t hold back the tears.
“Sis, they’ve moved out. Does this mean the house is up for sale now?”
The once fierce men now spoke to me in soft, almost coaxing tones.
“Thank you for playing along with us. The furniture is yours, consider it a gift. You can move in anytime.”
I handed the house keys to the big man and left behind this home that had tormented me

for over a decade.
Wasn’t Nick Herty planning to fake his deathth and then have someone come after the debt? Well, before he could start pretending, I decided to turn the tables–bring in some people to stage a debt crisis of my own.
In truth, these men were decent guys. They simply wanted to buy my house, and I had noto
debts out there at
all.

The thirty–day cooling–off period passed.
I deliberately dressed in tattered, filthy clothes. Nick Herty, hoping to ask me for
some money to settle the debt, was about to speak when I cut him off.

“Honey, could you lend me some money? They won’t leave me alone, they’re pushing me to the edge.”
I clung to Nick Herty’s clothes, sobbing as I implored him.
He shoved me away with a look of disgust. “We’re divorced now. Your debts have nothing to do with me. If you want, just die already–they can’t come after a dead woman.”
He
wait to finalize the divorce, and
Lena was waiting for him just outside the door.
The two of them no longer bothered with any pretense. The moment they stepped outside, they were in each other’s arms.
“Nick, you finally got rid of that old woman.
