Chapter 6
I forced myself to pull my thoughts back together and turned my gaze to Walon. “Is it really appropriate to talk about our adult matters in front of a child?”
“I’m Walon’s mother. Who are you to tell me how to raise him?”
Karena shot me a glare. “Don’t think I don’t know. You’re avoiding the real question because you don’t dare to face it. Emonie, when are you going to cure your love–brain? You’re sticking with a cheating man, and you don’t feel disgusted by it? Not to mention, he’s the one who destroyed your family!”
I stared at her, my mind a swirl of confusion.
I couldn’t tell whether what Karena said was

true or not, but one thing was clear, she was desperate to become Mrs. Chambers!
“You’re the one sleeping with my husband as a mistress, and you don’t think it’s disgusting. I have no reason to tolerate it! And you bring your child to me, trying to get me to divorce him. You probably can’t convince Gavin, so you want to try your luck with me, right?”
I let out a bitter laugh, taking a deep breath. “Karena, has it changed? Or have I just never
I seen you clearly? You were my best friend, the daughter my parents adopted, my ‘sister‘ Why would you betray me by sleeping with my husband?”
Karena’s hand trembled slightly as she lifted her coffee cup, but she didn’t directly answer my question.

“Emonie, you were kind enough to let your parents adopt me. Why can’t you show some more kindness now and divorce Gavin, so Walon doesn’t have to live as a bastard? He can’t always be a bastard. It’s unfair to him!”
I laughed bitterly, my anger rising.
“My kindness is not a tool for you to attack me! Walon being a bastard is your fault as a mother! Couldn’t you afford a condom? You had your fun, got pregnant, and now you’re trying to shift the blame onto me?”
My voice trembled as my emotions took
over.
“Karena! Let me be clear–I will never divorce Gavin! And I will be attending the wedding party!”
Seeing that I wouldn’t back down, Karena’s

patience finally wore thin.
She picked up the child, sneered at me, and said, “Don’t regret this!”
After throwing those words at me, she turned and walked away.
I stayed seated, staring at the ceiling, my mind a tangled mess.
Logic told me that Karena, having failed in her attempts, would try something else. I had to be prepared.
And as for what she said about Gavin ruining my father’s company…
I picked up my phone and, summoning all my courage, dialed Gavin’s number.
If anyone caused the trouble, it was up to

them to fix it!
The phone rang three times before it connected.
As usual, whenever I called him, the phone would be answered in under three seconds.
“Baby!”
After composing myself, I said, “Gavin, Karena came to see me with Walon today…”
I recounted everything that had happened between me and Karena at the café.
Finally, I lowered my voice and asked, “Gavin, is what she said true?”
“Of course not!” Gavin immediately denied it. “She’s just trying to use any means to get ahead! I would never do something

like that to your father’s company. I swear, if I did something like that, I’d get into
a car accident, and my body would be unrecognizable!”
Such a vicious vow made me temporarily let my guard down.
I responded, “Karena hasn’t achieved her goal, so she’ll definitely try other methods. Gavin, I promise you–I won’t divorce you, and I’ll play the role of Mrs. Chambers. I’ll

your part. Don’t let Karena hurt my family, or the baby inside me!”
“Don’t worry, baby, I’ve got this covered!”
But Gavin’s promise felt as empty as a fart- utterly meaningless.
Two days later, my father mysteriously fell

off a cliff and died.
