Chapter 16 Stay the Night
Marcus turned away coldly, “I don’t want to talk.”
Rebecca sighed. Such a willful reason.
Then
n promise me that you’ll try to talk more, okay? Your voice is incredibly nice to listen to, it’s a waste not to use it! If a fairy heard you make a wish, they would surely grant it.”
Marcus glanced at her, “Childish.”
Well then. Even three–year–olds are hard to fool nowadays. Rebecca continued to find ways to engage Marcus, playing games and encouraging him to speak
The day passed quickly, and by 5.30 PM, it was time to pick up Emma from school.
Rebecca checked the time; Nathan hadn’t returned yet, and she couldn’t just leave Marcus alone.
She called Mike, “Mr. Mike, do you know when Mr. Nathan will be back? I need to get home.”
Marcus, who was playing with sand, heard this and his little face immediately fell, his mood visibly darkening.
He grabbed handfuls of sand, scattering it aimlessly.
Rebecca was startled and quickly set her phone aside. “Hey, Marcus, what’s wrong? Don’t do that, you might get sand in your eyes and it will hurt
Marcus, stubborn, retorted, “If you go, I’ll scatter, I’ll scatter.”
Cough. So that was the issue
Rebecca tried to reassure him patiently. “I have to go home for a bit tonight, but I promise I’ll come back tomorrow to be with you, okay?
“I don’t want to Marcus continued to fling sand, now getting it in his hair and clothes, his distress escalating.
Reberca knew that temper tantrums in children shouldn’t be encouraged, but Marcus was a special case, and continuing like this might trigger a meltdown
Reluctantly, she said, “Alright, alright, I won’t go, I’ll stay here tonight, just calm down.”
At that, Marcus stopped his tiny hands and leapt into her arms, clinging to her like a koala, as if afraid she would deceive him.
Rebecca’s heart was touched. She hadn’t imagined that Marcus, whom she hadn’t seen in three years, would be so dependent on her. She felt a surge of tenderness and, lifting his smalldody, called Natasha to ask her to pick up Emma instead.
Meanwhile, Mike relayed the conversation to Nathan in the car, his voice clear and distinct.
“She deliberately made the call in front of Marcus, knowing he wouldn’t want her to leave, and used it as an excuse to stay. She’s very manipulative”
Nathan’s handsome face was unreadable, his aura chilly,
He said nothing but instructed Mike to keep driving, then tried calling Jocelyn.
He believed that if Jocelyn, the gentle and proper biological mother, spent niore time with Marcus, the boy wouldn’t grow attached to Rebecca.
But again, he couldn’t get through. Is she really that busy?

Chapter 16 Stay the Night
Finished
Rebecca had just finished helping Marcus with his bath and dinner and was cleaning up when she saw Nathan. She greeted him, “Marcus is upstairs, we had a good day.”
Nathan, removing his suit jacket and tossing it aside, didn’t acknowledge her.
She thought to herself. If it weren’t for the little one, would I even want to talk to him?
Under his roof, she had to tread carefully,
Rebecca spoke again, cautiously. There are two things I need to discuss. Tomorrow I’d like to take Marcus to the mall to buy some clothes. At his age, he should try different, more child–appropriate clothes, and the black isn’t good for his condition. And, I might need to stay here tonight because I mentioned leaving earlier and Marcus threw a tantrum. I was worried he’d have another episode like last night, so I agreed.”
She was careful to sound non–assumptive, not wanting Nathan to think she had ulterior motives.
But Nathan had already misunderstood. His icy gaze fell on her as he coldly said, “Rebecca, remember the conditions you agreed to last night. Don’t play games in front of me.”
