Chapter 18 Fixing the Garden
As Nathan’s thoughts wandered, the sound of the door locking across the hall snapped him back to reality.
His demeanor turned colder. What did that woman think I was going to do to her? Too presumptuous!
The night passed without incident.
In the morning, while Nathan was still asleep, Marcus’s pleasant voice woke him. It was rare to hear him call him “Daddy.”
He opened his eyes, his expression softening. “What’s up, hmm?”
Marcus tugged at his hand, pulling him downstairs with quick, joyful steps. What is so urgent this early in the morning?
Confused. Nathan found himself being led to the garden by Marcus, only to witness an incredible sight.
The garden, once filled with rare and exotic plants, had been transformed. There were topiaries, adorable rabbits, leaping goats, and beautiful fairies–each crafted with realistic, three–dimensional detail, full of charm and finesse.
Moreover, the layout was meticulously designed, resembling a wondrous animal kingdom or a forest garden. It was breathtakingly beautiful
Marcus, overflowing with childlike wonder, approached a goat topiary, his face lighting up with a smile he rarely showed, “I love this one. I love all of them! Daddy, did you surprise me with these?”
His voice was pure, his smile sweet
Nathan had never seen his son this uninhibited or talkative. He didn’t know how to respond and simply said, “Go on and play.”
As Marcus scampered off, Nathan turned to Mike, “Did you arrange for someone to do this?”
Mike shook his head. “No, I was just as surprised this moming. If I had known Marcus would like this, I would have learned the craft myself just to see him smile like that.”
If not him, then who?
Curious. Nathan listened as Mike revealed, “I checked the surveillance footage, and it was Rebecca who did the trimming”
Rebecca?
Nathan raised an eyebrow in surprise. He recalled how last night he had tasked her with cleaning the entire villa, half expecting her to cry, not to transform the garden into such a spectacle.
And she was just a young girl; how did she possess such skills? Nathan’s view of Rebecca shifted, seeing her in a new light.
Mike mused. only Rebecca was Jocelyn, and without those troublesome behaviors, wouldn’t that be perfect!
At II am, Rebecca woke up, shocked to find herself tumbling out of bed!
She had slept until 11. How embarrassing!
She quickly washed up and went downstairs, only to find Nathan in the living room, leisurely reading by the window. He hadn’t gone to work!
This was even more mortifying
