Chapter 3 This Is Bad!
Ding.
As Rebecca stood there, overwhelmed and disoriented, the doorbell suddenly rang. A soft female voice called from outside. “Nathan, I’m holding some things, could you open the door?”
It was Jocelyn’s voice!
Rebecca froze, her already nervous heart racing, and she didn’t know where the strength came from, but she suddenly pushed Nathan away.
This is it! Jocelyn is here! What should I do?
Nathan heard the voice outside as well. He looked at the woman in front of him, her face pale, and furrowed his brow. He reached up to open the doorbell video, only to see a woman who looked exactly like the one in his arms. His pupils suddenly contracted.
What is going on? Why is there a Jocelyn in my arms and another one outside?
The atmosphere froze.
Rebecca, frantic like an ant on a hot pan, couldn’t care less about Nathan’s scrutiny.
Back then, Jocelyn had forbidden her from appearing in front of him. Now, with her lips reddened and her clothes in disarray, Jocelyn would surely think something if she saw her like this.
Flustered, Rebecca pleaded, “Sir, please help me!”
Nathan remained silent. So, she isn’t Jocelyn?
His handsome face darkened, and his voice grew cold. “Who are you?”
Rebecca’s palms clenched. She was Jocelyn’s sister, but if she revealed that, it would expose everything.
Ding, ding…
“Nathan, are you there?” The urging voice outside came again before Rebecca could decide how to respond.
Nathan stared at her unease, his gaze swirling with dark thoughts. After a moment, in order to avoid unnecessary trouble, he spoke with a cold command, “Go inside. Don’t come out without my permission.”
His tone was icy, completely different from the warmth earlier, now filled with authority.
“Yes.” Rebecca nodded quickly, then hurried into the living room, hiding behind the curtains, moving faster than a rabbit.
Once she was hidden, Nathan averted his gaze, raised his hand with elegance, and opened the door.
Outside, Jocelyn, holding a bunch of groceries, smiled when she saw Nathan. “Nathan, you’re here! I thought you hadn’t opened the door because you weren’t home.”
She smiled sweetly, the picture of a gentle, virtuous wife.
Nathan looked at the face that was identical to the woman inside. His mind was filled with confusion, but his expression remained neutral as he asked, “Aren’t you busy with work? Why are you here?”
Jocelyn’s face shifted slightly.
Years ago, when Nathan’s grandfather passed away suddenly, they hadn’t gotten married. Afterward, he hadn’t mentioned it, and his feelings toward her had been indifferent. Now, she had rearranged her work schedule to spend more time with him, hoping it would make him happy, but things didn’t turn out as she had expected.
She forced a smile. “I’m worried about you. Every time you move to a new place, you can’t adjust, so I came to cook for you.”
Nathan took the delivery bag from her, his lips tight. “Don’t bother next time. Marcus and I are fine with takeout.”
His tone was cold, distant, and not at all warm.
Rebecca thought to herself, Jocelyn goes out of her way to cook for him, and he flat-out refuses her with such arrogance!
Jocelyn hadn’t expected her enthusiasm to be met with Nathan’s outright rejection. A bitter smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
Just as she was about to say something, her gaze fell on a strand of hair clinging to his white shirt. Her expression shifted to one of surprise as she asked, “Wait, Nathan, why is there a woman’s hair on your shirt?”
Hair! Oh no! It must’ve stuck there during the earlier struggle! What should I do? If Jocelyn finds out I’m here, hiding, I won’t be able to explain myself no matter what I say!
Rebecca held her breath, her entire body tense.
Nathan, however, merely glanced at the hair. His demeanor remained calm and composed as he replied in a cold, noble tone, “The delivery woman must’ve dropped it.”
His words were casual and indifferent, giving nothing away.
How could a delivery woman have gotten inside? And left a strand of hair on his chest? Plus, he took so long to open the door earlier, could it be that some woman was trying to seduce him?
Doubt churned in Jocelyn’s mind, though she kept her composure and maintained a graceful air. “Oh, alright. Nathan, you go ahead and eat. I’ll tidy up the room for you.”
Without waiting for his response, she set the groceries down and began to clean.
First, she walked to the cabinets, opening them to dust. Then, she moved to the couch, bending over to adjust the cushions while glancing underneath. Her actions seemed more like a search than mere tidying.
Hiding behind the curtains, Rebecca watched Jocelyn’s every move, her breathing nearly stopping.
It was obvious that Jocelyn was suspicious and searching for something!
And the living room wasn’t that big. It wouldn’t be long before Jocelyn got to the curtains!
As expected, within two minutes, Jocelyn’s gaze landed on the curtains.
Her footsteps drew closer, one deliberate step at a time.
In an instant, Rebecca’s palms began to sweat profusely, her entire body trembling.
This is bad. This is really bad. She’s about to find me…
