Chapter 5 A Train Derails
Outside the villa, Rebecca walked briskly out of the neighborhood, the cool night breeze brushing against her face as she sniffled lightly.
Although she never considered the possibility of anything with Nathan, the way he misunderstood her and used his power against her left her feeling unsettled.
Self-absorbed, arrogant, and presumptuous! If he ever became a detective, how many innocent people would he wrongly accuse?
“Rebecca! So it really is you!” A sudden, familiar voice rang out.
Rebecca looked up and saw Jocelyn emerging from behind the fountain. Jocelyn, with her elegant and graceful demeanor, exuded pride and refinement, just as her beautiful name. But at this moment, her expression was twisted with shock and anger.
Jocelyn!
“Jocelyn, what are you doing here?” Rebecca asked, confused. Isn’t she supposed to be buying wine? The supermarket isn’t even in this direction.
Slap!
Before Rebecca could react, a fierce slap landed on her cheek, sending her tumbling to the ground. A bright red handprint immediately appeared on her pale face.
Jocelyn glared at her angrily and snapped, “How dare you call my name? What did you promise me years ago? And now, here you are, running to Nathan and seducing him! Tell me, what were you two doing in the house just now? Are you trying to reveal that matter to him, ruin my happiness, and take my place as his fiancée? How could you be so cruel to me? I’m your sister, Rebecca!”
Her words were sharp and frantic, her voice trembling with rage.
Rebecca’s cheek and elbow throbbed with pain, her head spinning slightly. Hurt and angry, she pushed herself up and said, “Jocelyn, I was only here to deliver food. I didn’t even know Nathan was the one who ordered it. He mistook me for you. Nothing happened between us! I hid because I was afraid you’d misunderstand. If I really had any improper intentions toward Nathan, why would I have stayed away for three years?”
Jocelyn froze for a moment, her face stiffening.
It was true. Over the past three years, she had worried that Rebecca might pull something, yet Rebecca had never once shown up. This time really did seem like a coincidence.
Rebecca continued, “And besides, I’ve stayed out of your way for three years. You hit me just because of him? I see you as my sister, but how do you see me?”
To Jocelyn, Rebecca was nothing but a thorn in her side!
Of course, she couldn’t say that aloud. Jocelyn forced a smile. “Rebecca, of course I see you as my sister. I just misunderstood earlier. But your appearance here is bound to make Nathan suspicious, and one slip-up could lead to irreversible consequences. You wouldn’t want to bring shame upon yourself or cause me to lose my happiness, would you? So, while Nathan is in Sylvanvale for the next three months, could you leave the area for a while?”
Afraid Rebecca might refuse, Jocelyn added, “Think of the medical expenses I’ve paid for your grandma all these years.”
At the end of the day, Jocelyn couldn’t hide how much Nathan meant to her.
Rebecca smiled faintly. “My grandma is in the hospital, and I’ve lived here for 22 years. I’m not leaving. But don’t worry, I won’t show up in front of the blind guy or have anything to do with him!”
Who needs a cold, detached man when there are warm, caring guys around? Or cute, loyal ones? Or the joys of singlehood?
That blind guy, cold as ice and completely unkind in that regard, was definitely not her type!
“And Jocelyn,” Rebecca added, “when a train derails, it’s not because of the tracks or the scenery outside. It’s because of the train itself. Whether I stay or leave has nothing to do with your happiness.”
With that, she turned on her heel and walked away.
Jocelyn stood frozen, her face pale with anger.
What an insolent b*tch! How dare she speak to me like that! And Nathan actually lied to me for Rebecca just now?
The thought made Jocelyn seethe with fury.
Rebecca couldn’t be allowed to stay!
Taking out her phone, Jocelyn dialed Scarlett Foster’s number. “Are you Rebecca’s adopted mother? Hi, I’m her sister. I heard you’ve been struggling financially lately. I can offer you 100,000 if you help me with something.”
“It’s nothing too serious,” she continued. “Rebecca’s getting older, and it’s time for her to settle down. I hear Greg Hayes from your town is a good match. You know what I mean, right?”
