Chester ran over and grabbed Hannah’s other hand as if that would be enough to pull her back home.
Hannah didn’t shake him off. She spoke to him as gently as she had with Ethan.
“Chester, I taught you to respect your teachers and friends. You once told me you remembered it all.”
“I said that harsh words can hurt deeply, and you promised you’d never say things like that.”
She had barely spoken a few sentences when Chester’s face turned anxious.
“I–I… It was him! He’s the one always trying to take my mom away from me!”
Hannah asked calmly, “Do you remember what you said the day I was released from detention?”
Chester froze. He must have remembered because his eyes instantly turned red, on the verge of tears.
“You said kids don’t know better!”
Hannah sighed softly.
“But that wasn’t the first time.”
Chester’s tears clung to his lashes, leaving him speechless.
Yet Hannah’s tone remained as gentle as ever.
“Remember this–no one can take me away from you unless you push me away yourself.”
At that, Chester burst into uncontrollable sobs.
Christian’s assistant, Amelia, had come to pick him up. Seeing the scene before her, she hurriedly scooped Chester into her arms.
“Mrs. Ford, how could you treat a child like this? This is too much!”
Hannah glanced around.
She didn’t see Alice, Rebecca, or even Christian’s car.
She didn’t bother responding to Amelia and instead asked, “Have you been the one picking him up lately?” Before, she had always arrived late to pick up Ethan, when all the other parents were gone.
So this was the first time she had encountered this situation.
Amelia huffed. “Mrs. Ford has been sulking all the time, so as her assistant, I have no choice but to take on the extra burden. And honestly, you shouldn’t be acting so childish. Mr. Ford is incredibly busy–he barely has time to eat properly. Yet you keep throwing tantrums. It’s completely irresponsible.”
Hannah wasn’t stupid. Amelia was clearly implying that she was unworthy of being Christian’s wife and should step aside for someone more suitable.
She found it amusing and said. “It sounds like you think you’re not irresponsible. Well then, good luck— hope you climb the ranks soon.”

With that, she took Ethan’s hand and prepared to leave.
Chester tried to stop them, reaching out in protest.

But Amelia held him tight. “Mr. Chester, I bought you your favorite game console. Let’s go home, okay?”
That finally calmed him down, though he still called out loudly-
“Madam Amelia, you’re the best! I love playing video games!”
“As long as you’re happy.”
“Madam Amelia, I want to play for three hours!”
“No problem.”
“I also want lots of lollipops!”
“Okay, but you have to brush your teeth tonight.”
“Yay! Video games, here I come!”
As he spoke, he clung to Amelia’s neck, but his face was turned toward Hannah.
It was hard to tell if he was shouting for her to hear on purpose.
Hannah only hesitated for a second before her disappointment deepened. Without looking back, she tightened her grip on Ethan’s hand and hailed a cab.
Inside the car, Chester suddenly started acting up again.
“I don’t want to go home!”
Amelia kept her patience. “Mr. Chester, if you don’t go home, Mr. Ford will worry about you.”
“I don’t care! I don’t care!”
He threw himself onto the seat, rolling around in frustration, leaving Amelia completely at a loss.
In the end, she relented. “Where do you want to go, Mr. Chester?”
Chester sat up straight, pointing at the taxi Hannah had just gotten into.
“I want to go with her!”
Amelia was stunned. “No, you can’t–Mr. Chester, you-”
“I don’t care, I don’t care! If you don’t let me go, I’ll tell dad you’re mistreating me!”
Amelia turned pale with fear. “Okay, okay! We’ll follow them.”
The driver quickly tailed Hannah’s cab.
They assumed she was heading home, but unexpectedly, the taxi veered into a more and more remote
area.

Inside the taxi, Ethan curiously peered out the window. “Mom, where are we going?”
Hannah glanced at the luxury car following them in the rearview mirror and sighed.
“I’m introducing you to a new friend.”
“Is it one of your friends?”
“Yes, someone who kept me company for many years.”
As she spoke, the taxi pulled up near a cemetery.
The area was deserted. As they walked forward, Ethan noticed that someone was following them.
Nervously, he gripped Hannah’s hand. “Mom…”
Hannah remained calm, completely unfazed by the people trailing them.
“Ignore them. Come, look–this is the friend I wanted to introduce you to.”

Ethan thought it was one of her old friends who had passed away, but when he looked closer, his face froze.
Before him was a small gravestone with a photo of a dog attached to it.
The dog was pure white, with big, round eyes and a sweet, gentle expression as it sat obediently.
Ethan fell in love with it instantly.
“Mom, it’s so cute.”
He crouched down, reaching out to touch the photo, his eyes filled with soft admiration.
