Chapter 23 A Battle of Words
He had waited a long time, but Hannah still hadn’t called to ask for it.
She was really committed to putting on an act.
But he wasn’t going to indulge her.
“Is this for me?”
The moment Rebecca saw the diamond necklace, her eyes lit up with excitement.
Before Christian could respond, she eagerly fastened it around her neck.
“How does it look?”

She twirled in place, her custom–made white Chanel dress shimmering under the lights, the diamonds catching every glint.
Christian barely glanced at her. “It looks nice.”
Rebecca had expected him to be happy, but instead, he seemed distracted and irritated.
“Wear it to Chester’s parent–child sports event.”
The Day of the Parent–Child Sports Event, Hannah dressed in a sporty outfit, and Ethan wore a matching set. They looked like a perfectly coordinated mother–son duo.
“Mommy, do you think we can win?”
Standing in front of the mirror, Ethan was admiring himself. He was still little, but he already loved looking sharp.
He tugged at his sleeves, adjusted his collar, and even laid out three pairs of sneakers to choose from.
In the end, he settled on a pair of purple and black ones–cool and stylish.
Satisfied, he clenched his tiny fists in front of the mirror, looking determined to win first place.
Hannah, full of energy, smiled warmly at him. Lately, she had been eating well, sleeping well, and thriving at work. Her complexion was bright and glowing, making her look even more stunning.
“Of course we can!”
She took Ethan’s hand, and they arrived at the school on time.
The kindergarteners were gathered together, listening to their teachers explain the rules and safety guidelines, while parents waited on the field.
To her surprise, she ended up standing right next to Rebecca.
This kindergarten catered to the wealthy, and the parents here held significant social status. So even though Rebecca wasn’t wearing a mask, no one paid much attention to her celebrity status.
Hannah scanned the area and spotted Christian chatting with a few parents–probably discussing business
deals.

“Hannah, how have you been?”
Rebecca’s tone was gentle, as if there were no grudges between them.

Hannah had no interest in wasting words on someone who had killed Bobby. Her expression turned cold.
“None of your business.”
“How can you say that?”
Rebecca sighed dramatically. “If Chris hadn’t used my birthday as his password, you wouldn’t have gotten so upset and left home, right?”
Hannah suddenly remembered–back when they lived together, she had suggested using their wedding anniversary as the passcode for the villa.
Christian had refused, saying it was too obvious and could be easily guessed. So he had set a random string of numbers instead.
She hadn’t thought much of it at the time.
Now, Rebecca had intentionally brought it up–just to rub it in her face that she had been played for years.
“Wow, you really worked hard standing guard at that house for five or six years. Honestly, even Bobby wasn’t as dedicated as you.”
Rebecca’s face instantly darkened.
Bobby. The dog I had run over. And now, Hannah is comparing me to him.
Rebecca wanted nothing more than to slap Hannah across the face. But this wasn’t the place for that.
No matter how furious she was, she had to hold it in.
Just as she forced herself to calm down, the children’s teachers led them toward the field.
Rebecca suddenly smirked.
“You know, ever since you moved out, Chris and I have grown even closer. Chester even calls me ‘Mom‘ in secret. See this necklace? It was a gift from Chris and Chester, they picked it out just for me.”
Hannah followed Rebecca’s gaze to the sparkling diamond necklace around her neck.
It gleamed brilliantly under the sunlight.
“Chris said my fair skin makes this necklace look even more stunning. He just can’t help but…”
Rebecca trailed off, but the blush on her face said it all.
Hannah suddenly recalled that day at the golf course when Christian had been carrying a diamond
necklace box.
So this was what it was for.
Of course, first love was different. Even for a simple gift, he had personally made sure it was delivered safely, afraid anything might go wrong.

“Is that so? Well, be careful. There have been a lot of crackdowns lately.”
“You-!”
Rebecca’s expression twisted with rage.
Her voice, which had been calm and poised, now carried unmistakable hostility.

“Hannah, you’re just jealous that I have both Christian and Chester! That’s why you deliberately adopted that stray kid, isn’t it? But the joke’s on you–the more you act like this, the further you push Chris away! You’re pathetic! Your biological son, Chester won’t even invite you, but he calls me ‘Mom‘ instead. And you? You’re left clinging to a child that isn’t even yours for comfort.”
Hannah’s eyes turned ice–cold.
Her presence was sharp, like an arrow poised to strike.
“Rebecca! Ethan is my son–watch your mouth!”
Rebecca, sensing her victory, straightened up arrogantly.
“You came alone?” She smirked. “Did you forget? This event requires both parents to participate.”
Then, with a mocking smile, she continued, “Hannah, don’t tell me you actually think you can use this event to win Chris back?”
Before Hannah could reply, Rebecca sneered.
“Don’t be ridiculous. Chris only has room for me in his heart. You should just accept reality and get the divorce over with. Otherwise, the only one suffering will be you!”
As soon as she finished speaking, the children rushed onto the field to find their
