She was surprised that the interview was set in a cafe. But more than surprise, she felt relieved. This place happened to have a play area for children.
Ethan needed to enroll in kindergarten, but admission required at least one parent to have a stable job. For now, she had no choice but to take him along.
As soon as they stepped inside, Ethan pointed excitedly at the play area.
“Mommy, can I play over there?”
He shook the smartwatch on his wrist. “Mommy, I have this with me!”
He was trying to assure her that he could be reached at any time and wouldn’t get lost.
A nearby staff member smiled. “We have attendants supervising the children, miss. You can rest assured.”
Hannah nodded, crouching down to ruffle Ethan’s hair and gently pinch his chubby cheek.
“Be good and wait for me to come back, okay?”
Ethan straightened up and gave a little salute like a police officer. “Mission accepted!”
Hannah chuckled. “Alright, have fun.”
Ethan ran off happily, quickly making friends with the other kids.
Only then did Hannah follow the staff member to meet the HR representative.
What she didn’t expect was that the person interviewing her turned out to be Hudson.
She knew of him. Back in sophomore year, he had suddenly become Christian’s rival.
After graduation, he deliberately entered industries that overlapped with Ford Group’s, competing for projects at every turn. As Christian’s wife, she had encountered him a few times at events.
Hudson had a strikingly chiseled face, sharp and well–defined, like a sculpture carved from stone. Even in stillness, his presence carried an undeniable authority that demanded submission.
Yet, despite crossing paths, she had only exchanged a few polite words with him before turning her attention to socializing with the other women.
Strictly speaking, they hadn’t seen each other in over a year.
Ever since Rebecca entered the picture, Christian had rarely brought her to events.
Seeing Hudson again now, it felt almost surreal, like a lifetime had passed.
She glanced at him. He sat by the window, holding a coffee cup in one hand, his brows slightly furrowed, his sharp eyes narrowed in thought.
Not wanting to waste time, Hannah stepped forward and took a seat across from him. “Good morning, Mr. Whitmore.”

Hudson’s deep, slightly husky voice was as smooth as a cello playing in icy water. “Your interview question is to identify at least three design flaws in this cafe.”
Hannah blinked.
Then, without hesitation, she pushed aside everything on the table, pulled out a notebook and pen from her bag, and got to work.
Her pencil moved swiftly, sketching out the cafe’s layout, architectural features, and estimated dimensions.
Thirty minutes later, she handed him her notes.
In that short time, she had identified six problem areas, including the entrance wall, ceiling beams, and even the play zone.
Not only that, but she had also compiled rough estimates and proposed solutions for each.
“Mr. Whitmore, here’s my answer.”
She was still recovering from blood loss after her suicide attempt in the locked room, leaving her complexion pale.
But her eyes, bright as the sun, sharp with determination, held a heat that seared into the mind.
Hudson withdrew his gaze, lowering his eyes to scan her notes. For a brief moment, a flicker of admiration crossed his face.
“You’re impressive,” he said at last. “But you’re Christian’s wife, why should I take the risk of hiring you?”
Hannah smiled. “I’m in the process of filing for divorce. Besides, imagine the headlines, Ford Group’s PR team will be tearing their hair out. But most importantly, anyone else could betray you and defect to Ford Group, except me.”
Hudson closed the notebook and asked, “How can I trust you?”
Hannah didn’t hesitate. She laid her cards on the table. “I’ll let Whitmore Group’s legal team handle my divorce case.”
Hudson’s expression turned serious. “You’re hired. HR will handle your onboarding, but you’ll start from the bottom.”
A genuine smile finally appeared on Hannah’s face. “Mr. Whitmore, I’ll give this job everything I’ve got.”
“Let’s hope you live up to your words,” Hudson said as he stood. “I have another meeting. My assistant will handle your paperwork.”
“Thank you, Mr. Whitmore.” Hannah calculated that a taxi to Whitmore Group would cost over fifty bucks. Wanting to save where she could, she chose not to refuse the offer.
Unexpectedly, the usually cold–faced Hudson curled his lips slightly before turning to leave.
As a new employee, she kept a polite smile and saw him out.
Behind her, a man descended from the second floor of the cafe.
Christian had come to inspect the property and discuss a potential partnership with the owner.

Then he remembered how she had hung up on him before and let out a cold scoff.
This time, if she wanted to make amends, an apology to Rebecca wouldn’t cut it.
But as he took a few more steps down, his expression suddenly darkened.
Across from Hannah stood his longtime rival.
His wife was smiling as she exchanged contact information with the man he despised most.
His mood, which had just improved, instantly soured.
Hannah had just seen her boss off when she suddenly felt a chill down her spine.
Turning back, she locked eyes with Christian’s stormy gaze.
His voice, strained with suppressed anger, carried a mocking edge.
“What’s this? Hoping my biggest rival will help you take me down? You’ve grown bold, Hannah.”
She let out a sharp laugh. “Do you need me to remind you again? We’re already in the middle of a divorce lawsuit. Mr. Ford, you’re acting so tense, I’m starting to think you just can’t live without me.”
Christian’s gaze swept over her. Light makeup, dark hair framing crimson lips, pale skin, and those bright, shining eyes.
She looked stunning.
She had survived two whole days without him. Worse, she was acting like she didn’t care at all.
Heh. Her acting’s gotten better. Does she really think this little performance will get to me? That I’d throw my principles aside and let her walk away without an apology? Keep dreaming.
“I might not think much of Hudson, but I doubt even he has such poor taste to take in a woman who’s already had a child.”
Hannah frowned. I must be out of my mind for ever falling for this man.
“No wonder Mr. Whitmore can’t stand you. He actually thinks with his brain, not what’s between his legs, and he doesn’t throw tantrums for no reason.”
A vein throbbed in Christian’s temple. “Are you trying to use him just to get a rise out of me? Well, congratulations, you succeeded. Hannah, I accept the divorce. Even if you beg me now, I won’t give you another chance!”

Christian sneered.
So that is her game? Making me mad, then using the staff to get close to Chester? Fine.
He followed after her, ready to expose her ploy and make sure she regretted it.
