Children were crying, parents were scrambling, and a crowd had gathered, forming circles around the
scene.
Hannah rushed over, worried that Ethan might be at a disadvantage.
“Ethan, I’m here. Don’t be afraid, I…”
Before she could finish, she saw who he was fighting.
It was Chester.
At that moment, Ethan had Chester pinned to the ground, fists raised. The rest of her words got stuck in her throat.
Hearing a familiar voice, Chester turned to look at her. The instant their eyes met, his own reddened, but he quickly turned back to glare at Ethan.
“You thief! You stole from me! I’m going to beat you up!”
Ethan saw Chester struggling and lifted his fist again, but he didn’t swing. It was just a deliberate threat.
Chester flinched but stubbornly refused to back down.
“You’re a thief! You deserve to be punished!”
As Hannah stepped forward to separate them, she noticed they were both gripping a smartwatch, each refusing to let go.
Skycity Ville, the house she rarely visited, was where she had stored some miscellaneous items.
That watch had been a birthday gift for Chester.
It was a custom design.
One for Chester, and one for herself.
The biggest feature of the watch was that if the wearers were more than ten feet apart, an alarm would go off.
At the time, there had been frequent news reports of missing children, and she had been afraid something might happen to Chester.
But unfortunately, she reached out and firmly took hold of the watch.
Chester took advantage of the moment to shove Ethan away, his face smug.
“See? No one’s helping you! You’re a thief! Just wait till my daddy gets here! He’ll throw you in jail!”
He looked certain that Hannah would take his side and fight for him.
The next second, Hannah personally helped Ethan up, secured the watch on his wrist, then turned to face Chester’s shocked expression.

She was dressed casually, wearing a baseball cap and a face mask. If Hannah didn’t know her so well, she might not have recognized her at all.
“Hannah, Chester is your biological son! And you’re taking someone else’s side?”
Rebecca gently stroked the marks on Chester’s skin, as if heartbroken by his injuries.
“Whatever happened between us, you should take it out on me, not a child! You’re an adult, Chester is just a kid! Don’t tell me you couldn’t dodge that stool in time. With so many people here, do you have any idea how serious the consequences would be if someone spreads rumors online that the future heir of Ford Group attacked his own mother?”
Her voice rose with her final words. “You’re ruining your own son!”
At that, Chester, who had been frozen in shock and guilt, suddenly lifted his head.
A child’s emotions were never subtle, and in his dark eyes, a fire of rage flared up, almost seething.
Seeing him like this, Hannah felt a strange moment of dissonance.
He used to cling to her when he was little. No matter what happened, she was always the first person he thought of.
Once, she burned herself while cooking, and he clutched her hand, blowing on the wound over and over, tears rolling down his little cheeks.
“Mommy, don’t cook anymore,” he had said, voice trembling. “I’m a man, I’ll protect you!”
She wasn’t sure when things changed.
Maybe it started when he asked why she didn’t wear makeup or go to work. Or maybe when he started mentioning Rebecca with excitement in his voice.
But there was no point in dwelling on it. She let out a quiet sigh, looked Chester in the eye, and spoke evenly. “When I was in detention, I considered suicide. I lost too much blood, my health suffered, and just now, the situation escalated so fast that I reacted too slowly.”
Beside her, Ethan was still gently blowing on the bruise on her arm, his eyes shimmering with unshed
tears.
At that moment, she suddenly felt like there was no point in explaining further. Instead, she simply lifted her other hand and gently patted Ethan’s head, reassuring him that she was okay.
However, Ethan looked fearful. “Mommy, I don’t need his apology. Let’s go.”
Worried about how this might affect him, Hannah nodded and took his hand, ready to leave.
But Chester’s face twisted with even deeper resentment. He pointed at Hannah, his voice hoarse from yelling. “You’re lying! Ms. Rebecca told me you were just living somewhere else with people taking care of you. Why would you try to kill yourself? I’m your son, but you’re choosing that little b*stard over me! You’re supposed to be on my side! Why? Tell me why!”
