Six months ago, Chester came home from school with a scowl on his face. He complained that all his classmates‘ moms were designers or scientists, while she was just a housewife.
Hannah, caught off guard, tried to comfort him, assuring him that she wouldn’t stay home forever. She promised to return to work soon because she used to be quite accomplished.
But Chester shoved her away.
“If you hadn’t come between them, I would’ve been Ms. Rebecca and Daddy’s son! My mommy would’ve been a big star, and all the kids would envy me!”
That was the first time she heard of Rebecca.
It felt like a heavy stone had been placed in her heart.
That night, she asked Christian about this so–called “coming between them.” He denied it and even punished Chester.
She had felt relieved, until she saw the unmasked resentment in Chester’s eyes.
Just like now.
That burning gaze, filled with fury, seemed capable of reducing her motherly love to ashes.
She didn’t look at Rebecca. She didn’t react with anger or despair like she once would have. Instead, her voice was eerily calm.
“Chester, have you forgotten? Before I was taken away, I had a high fever that wouldn’t go down. It was Bobby who found fever medicine for me.”
If she hadn’t been so weak back then, Rebecca would have paid the price.
Beside her, Ethan’s eyes were red as he carefully rubbed her injured arm, his little face twisted in distress, on the verge of tears.
Hannah sighed softly and stroked his head.
Chester stiffened. Her words had clearly triggered a memory.
That day, he had been playing with his toys while Hannah lay on the couch. He had grumbled about how she still hadn’t gotten up to make lunch.
In the end, it was Bobby who noticed something was wrong. The dog had opened the medicine cabinet and brought the fever medicine to Hannah.
She took the pills, rested for a while, and was about to head to the kitchen.
Chester had kept mumbling, “I’m starving!”
But before she could even start cooking, Bobby had suddenly bolted out of the villa.

The anger surging in his chest suddenly wavered, giving way to a flicker of guilt.

But when he saw Hannah gently stroking Ethan’s head, he clenched his tiny fists in fury, itching to pick a fight.
She hadn’t ruffled his hair like that in ages.
He was fuming. He wanted to kick Ethan away.
His mom was supposed to love him and him alone!
Sensing his growing agitation, Hannah continued, her tone steady.
“When the police took me away, I was barely conscious. By the time they locked me up, I had already passed out. Are you sure I was just living somewhere else?”
Hannah realized she was losing control, saying far more than she intended.
Maybe, deep down, she still held onto one last shred of hope for this child bound to her by blood.
But it was useless. Chester didn’t believe a word.
His fists clenched even tighter, the veins standing out on his chubby little hands.
“You’re lying! You taught me about the law before. If you were really sick, the police would’ve called Daddy! But Daddy never got a single call from you!”
Christian had no idea how long he had been standing in the crowd before he finally spoke.
“Chester!”
At the sight of him, Chester immediately ran over, his face full of grievance. “Daddy.”
Christian didn’t comfort him. Instead, his tone carried a warning. “Did you forget everything I taught you about manners?”
Chester instantly fell silent, though he still turned to glare viciously at Ethan. Rebecca’s face lit up the moment she saw Christian. “Chris, you’re finally here.”
As if claiming her territory, she reached out and wrapped her arm around his.
“Can you talk to Chester? I’m sure Hannah didn’t mean to say those things on purpose. Don’t let this ruin their mother–son bond.”
Christian frowned and pulled his arm away.
Rebecca froze for a moment before forcing a bitter smile. “I guess I overstepped.”
But Chester clung to her hand. “Ms. Rebecca, you’re the best! You’re the only one who cares about me. Mommy only cares about that little b*stard.”
He threw himself into Rebecca’s arms and wailed, his sobs echoing through the crowd.
Christian’s expression darkened as he turned his gaze to Hannah. His tone was cold as he pointed at Ethan. “He’s starting preschool soon, isn’t he? You really think any school would accept a kid who goes around hitting others?”

The truth was, even if Ethan had done nothing wrong, as long as Christian said the word, no preschool would dare take him.
Hannah took a deep breath and stepped forward, gripping Ethan’s hand tightly.
The fifteen days she had spent in custody had long since worn down her spirit and crushed her pride. She had finally learned to gauge the situation.
“Both children got physical today, but Ethan struck first. On his behalf, I apologize to Mr. Chester and to you, Mr. Ford. I hope you won’t hold it against a child.”
The moment those words left her lips, Chester, who had been clinging to Rebecca, stiffened.
He let go abruptly and turned to stare at Hannah in disbelief.
He had been faking his crying before, but now, his tears were real.
Christian let out a cold scoff. His presence alone was enough to make it hard to breathe, and his fury bled through every syllable.
“Hannah, what did you just call Chester?”
She lifted her gaze.
Her marriage to Christian had always been relatively peaceful. They rarely even argued.
Back then, she had thought herself lucky to have married such a calm and rational man.
Then she had watched him beat a director to a pulp over Rebecca.
That was when she realized that if a man didn’t love a woman, nothing she did would matter to him. His heart would never waver for her.
So at the moment, seeing his anger felt almost novel.
But in the brief moment she was lost in thought, Christian grabbed her arm.
“Chester is your biological son!”
Pain shot through Hannah’s body, and cold sweat broke out on her forehead.
“And yet, you apologize to your husband and son for the sake of someone else’s child?”
Chester sobbed even louder.
“Mommy only cares about her kids! She would never love another child! She’s not my mommy!”
With that, he turned and ran off, crying. Rebecca quickly chased after him.
Hannah endured the pain and forced a lighthearted smile at Christian.
“You see? He doesn’t want me. But Ethan calls me ‘Mommy“”
Ethan, still too young to react quickly, had been shoved aside by Christian earlier.
But now, he understood.

Like an enraged little wolf, he lunged at Christian, scratching and punching.
“Let go of my mommy! She’s hurting! Let go of her!”
Hannah gritted her teeth and reassured him. “Ethan, I’m fine.”

But Ethan refused to back down. Tears streaming down his face, he bit the towering man in front of him.
Christian flinched as Ethan’s teeth sank into his hand. He finally snapped out of it and let go of Hannah.
But his aura remained icy.
“Well, all of this just so you can stop Rebecca from seeing Chester? Fine. I promise you. Now, can we go home?”
