Chapter 6
Adrian stood frozen, unable to respond to my words.
“Eleanor, you’ve never spoken to me like this before.
“Are you still angry? I can explain.”
I blocked his path, coldly regarding him with no hint of warmth.
“Explain what? Explain that you cheated because you had no choice? Explain that you think I’m already worn out from eight years of being with you? Explain that you’re with Sienna just because she seduced you?”
Adrian’s face went pale; his lips parted but no words came out.
“Not like that…” His voice cracked as he clutched the photos in his hands, pressing them to his face.
“How did we end up like this?”
I watched him crouch down, the photos scattered across the floor like broken pieces of something once whole.
It was pathetic, really.
We’d grown up together, and we were childhood sweethearts.
I still remember when we played house as kids, and my mom
had asked him, “Adrian, do you like Eleanor?”
He nodded seriously. “I do.”
My mom and his mom had laughed, teasing him, “Well then, how about Eleanor being your wife when you grow up?”
“What’s a wife? Does it mean we’ll always be together?” he asked, his face serious.
My mom had ruffled his hair and smiled. “Yes, but you have to promise to always take care of Eleanor.”
He’d grinned, “Then I’ll always be with Eleanor!”
But time passed, and things changed when Sienna entered the picture. Everything went to hell.
Sometimes, I thought about how different things might have been if I hadn’t gotten involved in charity work in high school. Maybe if I hadn’t, we would’ve turned out differently.
But then I realized that without Sienna, there would’ve been another
Woman.
I couldn’t help but let out a bitter laugh at him. “Did you think that now that you regret it, I’d come running back to you?
“You’re mistaken. I can barely stand the sight of you now. Everything you’ve done? This is all on you.
“You fell for Sienna. Fine, if you’d told me honestly, I would’ve
3/5
left. But instead, you chose to destroy what little love we had.”
I pulled the divorce papers from the nightstand and threw them at his face.
“We’re done. Don’t bother coming after me anymore.”
Adrian slumped, his face drained of all color.
He even had no idea when I’d even divorced him.
The day after the press conference, his parents had come to see me.
They called me malicious and unworthy of Adrian, saying they would sever all ties with the Sterling family.
They’d used their influence to end our marriage.
Adrian’s eyes filled with tears, his voice trembling. “So… it’s really
over?”
“Yes.”

The day I left for abroad, I told no one.
As the plane took off, a sense of relief washed over me. It was like a weight I didn’t even know I was carrying had been lifted.
In the years that followed, I still got messages from Adrian.

He couldn’t let go. He even came to find me abroad, begging me, “Eleanor, I was wrong. Please forgive me.”
But I had nothing left for him and didn’t want any part of him
anymore.
Then I heard Sienna was pregnant.
But on their wedding day, Adrian beat her black and blue, shouting, “It’s your fault! You’re the reason I lost Eleanor!”
Sienna lost the baby, and after that, she couldn’t get pregnant again.
She blasted the story online, and the Blake family’s reputation took another massive hit.
Then, to make things worse, she sold the company’s top–secret research for a fortune.
Adrian completely lost it. He went mad and set fire to the villa, taking Sienna down with him.
His parents couldn’t handle the loss of their son and were never the same again.
I heard that my dad, ever the opportunist, had bought out the Blake Group in the aftermath.
He didn’t scold me anymore for being ungrateful. Instead, he’d call, asking me if I was coming home.

When I got the news abroad, I was in the middle of preparing for a promotion.
I barely looked up and texted back: [No, I’m busy.]
Then I turned off my phone.
Now, I have my own life and career. I don’t want to go back to all that drama.
