She hadn’t meant to say that out loud. The moment the words left her lips, Xylia wished she could take them back. She probably looked like a complete fool.
Avoiding his gaze, she quickly turned and rushed to the sink, splashing cold water on her face in an attempt to snap herself out of it.
Sebastian had always treated her well, and the woman he once loved was no longer in this world. But even so. Xylia couldn’t allow herself to develop feelings carelessly. If she were to be with someone for life, she wanted her heart to be entirely theirs–without any lingering shadows or unresolved emotions.
This only made her more resolute in her decision to part ways with Sebastian once everything was taken
care of
After washing up, she made her way downstairs. Before long, Eleanor and Sebastian appeared.
“It’s been ages since Seb got up this early, Eleanor commented unexpectedly.
“Yes, I’ll drop Xylia off first, then head to the office, Sebastian replied.
Eleanor smiled warmly. “That’s good. You should continue treating Xylia well in the future.”
Xylia knew Sebastian was only doing this to put his mother’s mind at ease.
Since it didn’t inconvenience her, she accepted his offer to drop her off.
At the hospital, after a hectic morning and no afternoon shift, she was just about to head home when the hospital director summoned her to his office. He informed her that she’d been chosen to represent the hospital at a seminar hosted by the research institute.
In the past, this news would have excited Xylia–it was a chance to see Yrian or hear updates about him. But now, she felt nothing.
“Dr. Robinett, is it absolutely necessary for me to attend? Xylia asked.
Greg Robinett gave a firm nod. “Yes, you have to go. This seminar will cover newly developed medications for treating skin conditions, along with crucial experimental data. As the head of our hospital’s dermatology department, your presence will not only benefit you but also improve patient care.
Xylia straightened up, her expression turning serious.
“Understood. I’ll make sure to be there.”
Meanwhile, attendees were slowly gathering in the research institute’s conference hall.
Graham Radcliffe pulled Jayden aside, speaking to him in a low, earnest tone. “This is a crucial opportunity for you. If your drug gets approved, it will be distributed in hospitals across the country. That alone will significantly boost your chances of being promoted to deputy director. You could become the youngest one in history
Tll give it my all, Jayden said, his excitement barely contained as he nodded cagerly. He knew just how much this opportunity meant for his future.

generation, you’re the one I have the highest hopes for Your prescription made waves across the country back then… Alright, I won’t hold you up any longer. The experts here today are top dermatologists and researchers from all over the nation. Make sure to introduce yourself.”
Jayden had already spotted several influential figures the room. With Graham’s approval, he wasted no time in heading over to greet them. However, just as he was making his way through the crowd, he unexpectedly crossed paths with Ruby, causing him to stop in his tracks.
What are you doing here? Weren’t you supposed to be in the lab analyzing data? And what’s with this outfit?”
Ruby had dressed elegantly, wearing a flowing white gown paired with a soft blue fur shawl. A dazzling diamond swan necklace rested against her collarbone, accentuating the graceful curve of her neck. Among the middle–aged professionals, she stood out like a rare bloom.
“I–I just wanted to see if there was anything I could assist with, she stammered.
Jayden’s brows furrowed.
“I can handle things here myself. What about the experimental data while you’re gone?”
I had the intern assistant record everything.” Ruby replied, blinking innocently. I just thought I’d help out by serving drinks–and maybe talk to people about the effectiveness of the potion.”
Jayden considered it for a moment before reluctantly nodding. “Fine, just this once. But don’t do this again. If you show up like this, people will think our research institute lacks professionalism by hiring flashy assistants.”
“Got it” Ruby agreed with a sweet smile.
Ruby was thrilled to be allowed to stay and immediately started pouring drinks for the guests like a dedicated hostess, standing out as a striking figure among the crowd. However, the way she walked seemed a bit off, which didn’t escape Jayden’s notice. He grabbed her arm and pulled her aside.
“Aren’t you recovered yet?” He asked, lowering his voice.
“Not yet. And you’re not doing much better, are you?” Ruby whispered back.
“Go back! Stop making a fool of yourself! Anyone who doesn’t know better might think you were raped.” Jayden said impatiently, waving her off.
Feeling both aggrieved and anxious about possible misunderstandings, Ruby quickly made her exit.
Meanwhile, Jayden felt an irritating itch in a rather inconvenient spot an issue that had plagued him for
some time.
The hospital–prescribed ointment only provided temporary relief without addressing the underlying cause. He made a mental note to consult a more skilled doctor after the seminar, or perhaps even find one among the attendees.
When Xylia arrived, her eyes landed on Jayden, who was in the center of a crowd, basking in attention.
Xylia’s gaze briefly swept over a certain part of the man and a cold chuckle escaped her lips. Without drawing attention to herself, she casually found an inconspicuous seat and waited for the seminar to begin.

“Who is she? She’s quite stunning. Is she a doctor too?”
Nearby, two middle–aged doctors exchanged knowing glances.

“She’s from Brighton Central Hospital. Every hospital sends a representative, but why would they send someone this young? How much experience does she even have? How long has she been practicing?”
“She probably just slept her way to the top. With looks ke that, she’s probably more focused on dressing up than actually learning anything. What real skills could she possibly have? No doubt she relied on other means to get here.
The group exchanged knowing looks, smirking as they whispered their judgments.
Xylia, of course, overheard them. Noticing their badges she recognized them as senior doctors, which only deepened her displeasure. Right now, she was representing her hospital–if she caused a scene, they would only sneer at her even more.
“How many beds did you have to warm to get your position at your age?” Xylia asked, her tone light but sharp,
“You–what nonsense are you spouting?!” The middle–aged man who had been running his mouth earlier turned red with anger.
Xylia gave him a faint smile. “What nonsense could I possibly be talking about? Weren’t you the one implying that everyone present got here by being slept with?”
“That’s not what I meant!” The man’s face darkened as he fumbled for a response. With everyone’s eyes now on him, he hesitated to repeat his exact words. “I just meant… well, there’s only a woman here, and she is so young. You know what I mean.”
Xylia’s smile didn’t waver as she made a small, dismissive gesture.
“Thank you for complimenting my youth and ability.”
“I wasn’t “The middle–aged doctor’s face turned an even deeper shade of red, but before he could finish, Xylia waved him off with an easy grace. “No need to be hy now. I get what you were trying to say.” She tilted her head slightly, her voice light yet pointed. “But next time, try phrasing it differently. Otherwise, you’ll come across as an outdated relic clinging to feudal–era thinking.”
The middle–aged man’s expression shifted between pale and flushed as he realized that, aside from Xylia, no one else would interpret his words as a compliment. His meaning had been completely twisted against
him.
“Alright, you’re quite something,” he finally muttered after a brief hesitation, unable to come up with a better response.
“Xylia, why are you here?”
Jayden strode over, his face clouded with displeasure. He had been preoccupied with networking and only now caught sight of the situation, prompting him to rush over.
Before Xylia could respond, Jayden dragged her to the side, his gaze filled with certainty.
“I knew it, Xylia. You’ve been putting on an act this whole time.
