Chapter 2 Divorce! Pay Me One Billion!
After speaking, Xylia hung up the phone abruptly. Her heart ached as if it were bleeding, but her mind gradually cooled down.
Everyone in the Castros clearly knew about Jayden’s affair—they just wanted to cover it up.
And from the way they spoke, they had probably known all along. Yet they kept deceiving her, making her willingly sacrifice so much for the Castros!
She would not let any of them off!
Xylia didn’t return to the Castro Residence. Instead, she went to a small two-bedroom apartment.
After the Watsons went bankrupt and liquidated their assets, this was all that remained—the only thing her parents had left her.
Following her memory, she entered the password and stepped inside. The warm yellow light flickered on, revealing a space decorated in soft pink hues, exuding a girlish charm.
Xylia loved pink to the extreme. Her parents had designed the entire place according to her preferences.
Jayden had been here once, but he left without even stepping inside, scoffing at her for being pretentious. “Who decorates an entire house in pink?” he had said.
After that, she never invited him over again.
And later, with the birth of their child and her responsibilities in taking care of his parents, she had no time to come back herself.
After tidying up briefly, Xylia lay down on the bed.
That night, she slept restlessly. Her dreams were filled with the beautiful memories she once shared with Jayden—alongside vivid scenes of his betrayal. She also dreamt of her deceased parents holding her and crying, their grief unstoppable.
By the time she woke up, her pillow was already soaked with tears.
Xylia wiped her swollen eyes, forced herself to pull it together, and—uncharacteristically—put on heavy makeup before heading to a law firm.
After drafting the divorce agreement, she immediately went to the hospital—only to run into her mother-in-law, who had just arrived to visit her son.
Upon seeing her, Irene Castro let out a disdainful snort. “Where did you go fooling around last night? At least you still remember to check on Jayden?”
Without waiting for Xylia to respond, Irene arrogantly continued, “Let me tell you, I remember every word you said yesterday. The moment Jayden is discharged, the first thing he’ll do is divorce you!
“Don’t even think about getting custody of Yrian, and forget about the Castros’ wealth! Jayden doesn’t have any assets under his name, so you’ll be leaving with nothing.
“It’s too late to regret now. Jayden and you have been apart for five years; you can file for divorce at any time. Stop trying to cling to our family.”
Xylia felt a sharp pain in her heart but looked at her coldly.
The Castros were far from lacking money. In fact, they were extremely wealthy. They had made a fortune in real estate before shifting to support their son’s venture into the pharmaceutical industry. With the industry booming, they had ridden every wave of opportunity, amassing a fortune worth billions.
Who would have thought that a family this rich would be so calculating toward their daughter-in-law? They made her do housework every day and had never even bought her a single luxury handbag.
And the ridiculous part? She had endured it for so many years.
This was all due to her faith in Jayden. She believed that her own husband would stand by her. She believed that after all the suffering, happiness would come.
Now, Xylia was fully awake from that illusion. With a calm heart, she handed over the brown envelope.
“Since you’re here, pass this divorce agreement to Jayden.”
“You’re being this cooperative?”
Irene was momentarily stunned. She took the document and glanced at it. The moment she saw the conditions, her pupils contracted sharply. The soup in her hand slipped and spilled all over the floor.
“Xylia, how dare you!
“This is a billion!”
Her voice was so loud that people nearby turned to look. Xylia remained composed. “Either Jayden signs the agreement immediately, or I’ll release all the evidence of his affair online—or better yet, start spreading it right now.”
“Don’t go too far!” Irene gritted her teeth. “Don’t forget your current status. At most, I’ll give you 100,000.”
Xylia chuckled. “I’ve already scheduled the release of his affair evidence across major platforms at exactly 4 p.m. If the Castros can afford that kind of humiliation, then don’t bother sending him to the City Hall.”
With that, she turned and walked away gracefully, leaving Irene furious, stomping her feet in rage amid the mess on the floor.
Irene’s face was dark as she headed to the hospital room.
Yrian had stayed there overnight. When he saw her, he immediately ran over.
“Grandma, did you bring me something tasty?”
“Forget about food. Go outside first. The bodyguards will take you.”
As they took Yrian away, Jayden immediately noticed his mother’s anger, a bad feeling rising in his chest.
“Mom, what’s wrong?”
Slap!
A heavy slap landed squarely on the face of the woman beside him.
“You shameless woman! This is all your fault!”
Ruby’s cheek instantly turned red. Jayden quickly stepped in front of her, frowning at his mother.
“What are you doing?”
Irene’s face was dark as she threw the divorce agreement at him.
“Xylia wants a divorce. The agreement is right here. And she’s demanding one billion—if we don’t pay, she’ll ruin your reputation! Why couldn’t you two be more discreet?! Did you have to get caught by the media at the hospital?!”
“She dares to ask for one billion?!” Jayden’s expression darkened.
“What a disaster! We only let her marry in because she came from a decent family, and you liked her! Who would’ve thought she’d turn out to be such a greedy wretch?” Irene was seething. She couldn’t bring herself to blame her son, so she kept glaring at Ruby instead.
“I think she just doesn’t want to get divorced. She’s demanding such an outrageous sum to force us to back down,” Jayden sneered with confidence. “I’ll call her.”
He pulled out his phone and dialed, but no one answered. His face grew even darker.
“Maybe we should just ignore her. That woman is clearly trying to cling to you. We’ll just treat her as if she doesn’t exist,” Irene said, reluctant to part with the money. “Later, you can sweet-talk her a little. She definitely won’t release the evidence.”
Irene was confident in her son, convinced that Xylia’s demand was just a ploy to stay.
“Mom, I can’t stand another day with her. The thought of coaxing her makes me sick. I’d rather give her the one billion and be done with her,” Jayden said firmly, squeezing the hand of the woman beside him.
“That’s one billion! I’d rather throw it in the river than give it to her,” Irene said coldly, casting a sharp glare at Ruby.
Ruby’s heart pounded, but she knew that if she didn’t take action now, life in the Castros would be difficult for her in the future. Her mind raced.
“Irene, don’t worry. I have a way to get that money back.”
4 p.m.
In front of the City Hall.
Xavier had arrived early and had been standing there all afternoon. She watched countless young couples walk in hand-in-hand, smiling brightly. When they walked out, they each held marriage certificates.
Once upon a time, she and Jayden had walked in just as happily. She had believed they would love each other for a lifetime.
She never imagined it had all been just her own wishful thinking.
“Xylia?”
A deep, magnetic voice suddenly rang out. It was soft, yet oddly familiar.
She looked up and saw the door of a sleek black car with a license plate full of eights swing open. A tall, imposing figure stepped out.
The man stood over 6’2″ tall in a black suit. His hair was cut short in a simple crew cut, but paired with his strikingly handsome and chiseled features, it only emphasized his sharp and cold aura. A deep scar, less than an inch long, ran across his forehead—a scar that, to Xylia’s trained eye, was definitely from a life-threatening wound.
Moreover, his presence alone made it clear he wasn’t an ordinary person—an obviously expensive license plate, a Kiton top-tier bespoke suit, and the signature embroidery of the brand’s chief designer on the cuff. Just this outfit alone was worth at least five figures. He was undeniably wealthy.
“Who are you?” Xylia asked, confused as to why someone of his status would know her.
