Chapter 20 Take Responsibility
The woman trembled slightly, on the verge of breaking down.
Xylia gave her hand a reassuring squeeze and said softly, “Leave it to me.”
“Mm.”
Tears welled up in the woman’s eyes, but she said no more.

Xylia turned to the others and spoke in a calm, even tone. The woman behind me was doused with gasoline by her ex–boyfriend after they broke up. Fortunately, she reacted quickly, so the affected area wasn’t too large, and the fire was put out in time.”
Dr. Christopher rolled his eyes.
Injuries are usually the result of accidents. For all we know, she cheated him out of money, and he lost his temper. It’s probably her fault.”
Xylia let out a sharp laugh, more out of disbelief than amusement. “Are you seriously blaming the victim? No matter what happened, throwing gasoline on someone is completely out of line.
Dr. Christopher waved dismissively. “I don’t want to argue about this. Stop changing the subject. We’re talking about your medical skills and ethics!”
Xylia glanced at the woman beside her and asked gent, “Can I show them the photos?”
The woman’s eyes brimmed with tears, but she knew crying would only make things worse. She clenched her jaw and nodded.
Xylia took out her phone and pulled up their chat history. Page after page showed messages of comfort and encouragement she had sent the woman. There were also selfies the woman had taken and photos of her injuries from when Xylia changed her dressings.
The moment the initial photos of the woman’s face appeared, the crowd gasped.
When she was first admitted to the hospital, her burns were severe–bordering on second–degree. The wounds all over her body were horrific, raw, and torn open. Just looking at them was enough to make one shudder.
But as the photos progressed over time, a clear transformation took place. The woman’s condition steadily improved. Now, she was even able to change her bandages. Many of the deep wounds had scabbed over and were healing well.
The woman pointed to her face and rasped, “At first, I thought I was beyond saving. I assumed Dr. Watson was just trying to comfort me. But look–some of the burns have completely healed. There aren’t even scars left. My skin looks even better than before.”
She was incredibly sensitive to the changes in her appearance. While others hadn’t noticed at first, as she pointed out the details in each ploto, they began to see the differences. Some areas had indeed healed flawlessly, leaving no scars behind.
The doctors in the room had the clearest understanding of what they were witnessing. Their expressions turned complicated as they looked at Xylia

Dr. Christopher, ever self–assured, reached out his hand. “How did you do it? Show us the formula.”

Xylia replied calmly. “The formula belongs to the hospital. However, if the patient agrees to share it, then you can take a look.”
“I refuse!” The woman’s rejection was firm and immedie.
Dr. Christopher’s face darkened. He scoffed angrily. “If you run into complications later, don’t expect us to treat you!”
The woman shot him a glare and snapped, “A bunch of old men who immediately assume women are at fault–what kind of doctors are you? Get lost! You’re interfering with my treatment. If I end up with side. effects. I’ll blame you!”
Dr. Christopher muttered curses under his breath. Meanwhile, the other doctors, who had initially agreed to observe the case, frowned as they approached the scene.
“I thought you were here to learn,” one of them said coldly. “If you’re just here to stir up trouble, then leave. Dr. Watson is an excellent physician, and this hospital won’t tolerate your nonsense.”
In the end, the hospital director and his group were unceremoniously kicked out. Somehow, the incident made its way online, sparking a wave of discussion. Soon, GF Medical Center was trending, and Xylia found herself busier than ever. But despite the hectic schedule, she felt a deep sense of fulfillment.
Late at night, just as she was about to drift off to sleep, she accidentally tapped on an incoming call from Yrian. That’s when she suddenly remembered that family from her past.
The moment she answered, Jayden’s furious voice roared through the speaker.
“Xylia! How could you be so heartless? You actually had the nerve to secretly hit Yrian!”
Xylia blinked, momentarily caught off guard. But then, recalling what she had seen when she visited” she quickly pieced things together. “I didn’t. That was probably Ruby”
Yrian,
“Cut the crap! Yrian told me himself! Stop making excuses. Because of you, he just got out of the hospital today–his face is covered in bruises! You think you can just blame Ruby because she’s kind and easy to bully?”
Xylia was speechless. “Put Yrian on the phone.”
Before Jayden could respond, Ruby’s gentle voice chimed in from the other end, sounding both soothing and subtly provocative. “Xylia, Yrian isn’t doing well right now. He doesn’t want to talk to you.”
Xylia’s tone remained calm. “Oh, then take good care of him for me. Let him know I hope he grows up healthy.”
Jayden let out a cold sneer. “My son will, of course, grow up healthy. But a heartless woman like you–who abandoned her own child for one billion dollars–will die a miserable death.”
His words were laced with venom, but Xylia didn’t care in the slightest, Without hesitation, she hung up.
With the end of the month approaching, she had a nagging feeling that something was about to happen. But with the Jackmans backing her, she wasn’t afraid.
That night, after taking a shower, she stepped out wrapped in a bath towel–only to freeze at the sight of a

Sebastian was propped up on one arm, his other hand resting against his forehead, partially shielding his eyes from the light. His long lashes cast faint shadows over his face, making it hard to tell whether he was deep in thought or simply resting,
Xylia found herself in an awkward predicament–retreating felt silly, but walking out as if nothing happened didn’t seem like a great idea either. She clutched the towel tightly around her, her damp hair cascading over her bare shoulders. The contrast between her porcelain skin and the dark strands was striking, and her slender legs instinctively drew closer together, as if trying to shrink from sight.
For the past few weeks, despite sharing a room, they had barely crossed paths. Sebastian returned late at night and left early in the morning, keeping their interactions to a bare minimum. If she added up all the words they’d exchanged, it probably wouldn’t even amount to five sentences. It was almost as if the hospital shares and that emotional moment between them had never happened. Xylia had started to feel like she was just living her own life, independent of him
So, sticking to her usual routine, she stepped out in her towel–only to immediately regret it.
“Ugh, I forgot to bring my pajamas,” she mumbled to herself, feigning nonchalance as she walked past Sebastian
But just as she moved, her foot suddenly slipped, and she lost her balance.
Sebastian, who had been lying still just moments ago, instantly sat up and caught her before she hit the ground.
“You okay?” he asked.
I’m fine–ah!”
Xylia’s face turned scarlet the moment she looked down. Somehow, her towel had come loose. Frantically. she yanked it back into place, but not before Sebastian’s sharp gaze had already taken everything in
“You saw nothing!” She blurted, flustered beyond belief
She quickly glanced at the floor, but there was nothing there–no water, no objects she could have tripped. on. Which meant she had simply slipped for no reason. Most likely because she was too nervous walking past him.
Sebastian’s dark eyes lingered on her, unreadable. “I should take responsibility.”
“Mr. Jackman, you’ve got quite the sense of humor.” Xyla forced a laugh, trying to play it off.
I’m not joking
Silence fell between them.
If this were the old Xylia–the one who still believed in love–she might have already fallen for him by now. But she wasn’t that person anymore.
“We’re only married on paper.
“We can tear up the contract.

Xylia didn’t dare continue the conversation. If she did, she was afraid she’d start having thoughts she wasn’t supposed to.
I’m going to change–ouch!”
A sharp pain shot up from her foot, nearly making her stumble again. Fortunately, Sebastian was still standing close and caught her in time,
