Chapter 3 Choosing Money or the Opportunity to Meet Her Son
Sebastian Jackman curled his lips slightly, his aura suddenly softening. “I used to be your patient.”
“Sorry, I don’t remember.”
Xylia prided herself on having a good memory, but she had no impression of the man before her.
“My name is Sebastian Jackman.” He extended a hand toward her.
Out of politeness, Xylia intended to shake it, but given that she was in the middle of an important stage of her divorce from her ex-husband, it was better to maintain distance from the opposite sex.
She pretended not to notice and smiled naturally. “Mr. Jackman, I have something to take care of.”
“A divorce, right? Coincidentally, I’m waiting for someone to get married.” Sebastian lowered his gaze slightly, staring at her intently.
His eyes were almond-shaped, light in color yet bright. The way he looked at her gave the illusion that he had loved her deeply for many years.
Xylia felt she was overthinking things and immediately averted her gaze, taking a step back to increase the distance between them.
“In that case, to avoid any misunderstanding with your future wife, you should stay away from me.”
“Alright.”
Sebastian’s lips curled again. His sharp, aggressive features contrasted with his obedient demeanor, making him seem unexpectedly docile.
Xylia wondered if she was being too cautious. They weren’t standing too close—less than six feet apart, a perfectly safe distance.
Just then, another car pulled up, and Jayden stepped out.
His expression was grim, and beside him stood Ruby, who looked just as displeased, though triumph flickered in her eyes.
“Xylia, I never thought you’d be such a greedy, shameless woman.”
Jayden dropped all pretense, his words laced with curses, completely devoid of his usual scholarly elegance.
Xylia stared at the face she had once longed for day and night. It was exactly as she remembered, yet now it felt utterly unfamiliar.
“One billion—it’s yours. But you have to sign this confidentiality agreement and take this secret to your grave.
“At this point, you have no choice. You’re not worthy of being my wife anymore. Even if you got on your knees and begged, it would be useless.”
Jayden tossed a document and a bank card at her. His expression was cold, exuding the arrogance of someone born into privilege.
Xylia let out a cold scoff and opened the contract. It stated that if she violated the terms and exposed Jayden’s relationship with Ruby, she would have to pay triple the penalty—three billion. That was a standard compensation clause.
She had expected a confidentiality agreement but hadn’t thought they would agree so easily.
After all, this was a full one billion.
She wasn’t a greedy person. She just wanted to make the Castros uncomfortable and compensate herself for the years she had wasted.
For them to hand over the money so readily, something was definitely off.
Xylia read through the contract multiple times. Everything seemed in order, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right.
Even if Jayden was willing to give her one billion, the notoriously stingy Castros wouldn’t have agreed so easily.
“I’m going to check if this card really has the money.”
“I’d have told you to check anyway. That way, you won’t try to use this as an excuse to cling to me later,” Jayden said disdainfully.
Ruby covered her mouth and laughed. “Enjoy counting, Xylia. This is the only time in your life you’ll ever have this much money.”
Their words and expressions seemed perfectly normal, but Xylia just couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off.
She scanned both sides of the road—nothing seemed unusual—then walked to the ATM across the street.
“Are they ready?” Jayden asked in a low voice.
Ruby smiled sweetly. “Don’t worry, Jayden. I won’t let that woman take a single cent from the Castros.”
“Hurry up,” Jayden urged impatiently. “Xylia is clingy. If she starts asking for more or tries to stay involved with the Castros, it’ll be a hassle.”
Their voices were soft, but Sebastian heard every word clearly. The curve of his lips deepened.
Xylia confirmed that the one billion was indeed in the account, but her heart tightened instead of relaxing.
As she walked back, she glanced at the not-so-wide road, where the sparse but law-abiding traffic moved steadily. News reports of countless traffic accidents flashed through her mind, and a chill spread from the soles of her feet.
If she died, this one billion would go straight back to the Castros.
“Xylia, hurry up, or the City Hall will be closing soon.” Jayden urged impatiently, his voice loud and irritable.
“Yeah, Xylia, come sign the contract already.”
Xylia took a deep breath, but her feet felt like they were weighed down by a thousand pounds—she couldn’t take a single step forward.
Suddenly, she caught sight of Sebastian, the man who had claimed to be her patient, standing across the street. She had no idea when he had arrived, but now he was just six feet away, seemingly about to cross.
At this distance, if a car were to hit him, she would be caught in it too.
Conversely, if something happened to her, Sebastian wouldn’t be able to avoid it either.
But hadn’t he said he was waiting for someone to get married? Why was he suddenly here, across the street?
Just as she was wondering, the man had already stepped onto the pedestrian walkway. Xylia had no time to think—she immediately followed.
Her fists clenched, ready to dodge any oncoming vehicles.
Thump, thump, thump.
Her heart pounded wildly. The walk across the street felt unbearably heavy, each step dragging, yet all the cars behaved normally, yielding to pedestrians as usual. She reached the other side unharmed.
Maybe she had been overthinking things.
Jayden’s expression flickered with surprise. “What’s going on?”
Ruby’s phone buzzed twice. She glanced at the message and cursed under her breath. “Damn, just our luck. My uncle’s street is blocked because of an accident. He can’t get through no matter what.”
Seeing the growing displeasure on Jayden’s face, Ruby quickly reassured him, “Don’t worry, there will be plenty of chances later. Even if she gets divorced, she’s still Yrian’s mother. She has no family, and her inheritance will go to Yrian anyway. That one billion is still the Castros’ money. We can take care of her in the next few days.”
Jayden’s expression eased. As a reward, he gave Ruby’s hand a light squeeze.
“Ruby, only you are worthy of being my perfect wife.”
The two of them were partners in crime. By the time Xylia walked back, they had already resumed their usual act, showing no trace of their sinister scheming. Jayden sneered.
“Getting scared just crossing the street? How pathetic. I can’t believe I ever liked you.”
Xylian ignored him. Instead, she glanced at the man standing in the distance, silently feeling a surge of gratitude.
She read through the confidentiality agreement once more, ensuring it hadn’t been swapped, before finally picking up the pen.
Her sluggish movements made Jayden sneer. “Still dragging your feet? It’s too late to regret it now.”
Xylia immediately signed.
“I have no regrets.”
Jayden pressed his lips together, convinced she was just putting on a brave face.
The three of them entered the City Hall together, where Jayden added two more conditions to the original terms.
First, she was not allowed to see him.
Second, she was not allowed to see their son.
“If you return the one billion, my mother may allow you to see Yrian from afar, but you must not interfere in his life.” Jayden spoke as if granting her a favor—her final chance.
If this woman had any sense, she would return the money, and he might be merciful enough to spare her. But if she thought she could cling to him, she was deluding herself.
“I choose the money.”
Xylia signed without hesitation.
Jayden didn’t waver either. He signed immediately, then shot Xylia a cold look.
“I want to see how long you can keep up this act.”
They had grown up together as childhood sweethearts, and their fights had never been few. But in the end, Xylia was always the one to make peace.
Once upon a time, she had worshiped Jayden like a god, always wanting to be close to him. For years, she had been the one to reach out first, cherishing even a single-word reply from him for a whole month.
But now, bitterness welled up inside her. If she could have endured her husband’s infidelity and her son’s betrayal, perhaps she would have kept enduring.
The truly ridiculous part was that despite all their years together, Jayden had never understood her principles.
The Castros’ influence and their five-year separation made the divorce process unusually smooth.
The moment Jayden received the divorce certificate, he immediately went to register his marriage with Ruby.
Xylia paid them no mind and walked out of the City Hall on her own.
Snow had begun to fall at some point, drifting silently from the sky. Fortunately, Xylia had brought an umbrella.
Winters in Brighton were always particularly cold. That tall figure still stood in the same place, his shoulders dusted with a thin layer of snow. Frost clung to his long, thick eyelashes, and as he blinked in her direction, his eyes shone with an unusual brightness.
“Where’s the person you were waiting for? The City Hall is about to close.”
Xylia walked closer, tilting her umbrella slightly toward him in quiet acknowledgment of his earlier help.
A thought crossed her mind, making her press her lips together before cautiously asking, “Did she stand you up?”
The man lowered his gaze. His features, sharp and inherently intimidating, now carried a trace of desolation.
He said nothing, yet it felt as if he had said everything.
Xylia regretted speaking. She felt as though she had just pierced his heart.
Suddenly, the man reached out, grasping the upper part of the umbrella handle. His movements were both polite and firm—leaving no room for refusal—as he took the umbrella from her hands and held it over them both.
“Marry me.” Sebastian spoke each word with deliberate clarity, his tone filled with unwavering seriousness.
