Chapter 4 The Family Frowned
“Huh?”
Xylia couldn’t believe her ears. She stammered dryly, “You—you must be joking.”
The man in front of her was clearly well-off and undeniably good-looking. How could someone like him be interested in her?
Sebastian glanced at the entrance of the City Hall and said calmly, “Your husband and his mistress want to harm you. Right now, you have no one to rely on. You can’t even guarantee your safety tonight.
“If you die, your son will be the primary heir to your inheritance.”
“How do you know that?”
Xylia was shocked by how much he knew.
“I overheard it.”
Just now, he had indeed been standing next to those two. She had also sensed Jayden and his mistress’s murderous intent toward her. On top of that, she really did have a billion dollars in her name—enough motive for them to kill.
Hearing Sebastian say this, she believed him.
“Thanks for the warning.”
A chill ran through Xylia. So she hadn’t been imagining things—her fear had been real.
“Marry me, and I can protect you,” Sebastian repeated his proposal.
Xylia pressed her lips together. “Mr. Jackman, please don’t joke about things like this. We’re not related in any way, and we barely even know each other. I don’t believe in love at first sight, I don’t do flash marriages, and I’m a traditional person.”
She took a polite but firm step back, preferring to stand in the falling snow rather than be too close to him. She didn’t even want her umbrella anymore.
Sebastian didn’t step forward to close the distance. He simply picked up the abandoned umbrella and held it over her head, letting himself get drenched instead.
His gaze lowered slightly.
“I’m a traditional person too.”
Xylia let out a breath of relief.
“I never change once I like someone. After marriage, all assets belong to my wife. I handle all the housework. I cook. I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, and I don’t talk to other women more than necessary.” Sebastian’s tone was indifferent, but his gaze locked onto her. “A traditional person like me … isn’t that exactly what you’re looking for?”
“No, that’s not right.” Xylia’s mind was in complete disarray because of him. “That’s not the kind of ‘traditional’ I meant. I mean, I don’t do flash marriages—wait, no! I just got divorced, my ex-husband is still trying to kill me, and you think I have time to consider getting remarried right now?”
Sebastian’s presence was overwhelming. Even simply standing there, Sebastian captured everyone’s attention, especially when he spoke to her and observed her closely.
She almost got completely caught up in his pace.
Sebastian took out a business card.
“I own a security company. The villa I live in has the highest level of security. It can guarantee your safety.”
Xylia accepted the card and saw the words “Jackman Group” on it. Then it suddenly clicked.
No wonder he looked familiar—wasn’t he the same Sebastian from a few years ago? The military officer who had to retire due to an injury? The heir of the Jackman Group?
Back then, the news had caused an uproar. Sebastian had been famous in military circles, becoming a commander at a young age with a limitless future ahead of him. Even though he had to leave due to health reasons, simply inheriting his family’s business still made him the wealthiest man.
She had even sighed at the time, believing that some people were destined to shine and that nothing could diminish their brilliance.
Curious, she pulled out her phone and did a quick search. At the very top was a recent article—apparently, Sebastian’s mother had publicly announced she was searching for a wife for him. A large number of eligible women had responded, and the news had even trended.
There were also countless high-definition photos of him from every angle. The scar on his forehead was unmistakable. He was, without a doubt, the man standing in front of her.
At that moment, Xylia suddenly understood why he wanted to marry her. It was exactly like the plotlines she often read in novels—a contractual marriage to appease his family.
Why had he chosen her out of the blue? Probably because she was a divorcée, had a billion dollars, and after marriage, they could live separate lives while he simply assigned bodyguards to protect her.
Xylia felt that her theory was a bit ridiculous, but it was still quite reasonable.
“I can agree, but you have to guarantee my safety. Also, I need to do a prenuptial agreement. If I pass away, I will donate all my assets to children in impoverished areas.”
The faint smile in Sebastian’s eyes instantly disappeared. “Fine, but don’t talk about dying.”
Xylia watched the way his expression shifted and felt that he was unpredictable. Her wariness toward him deepened a little.
“Also, since it’s a contractual marriage, I’ll have my lawyer draft the agreement,” she added.
The wealthier someone was, the better they were at hiding loopholes. Rather than risk missing something, she’d rather handle it herself.
“A contractual marriage … Okay.” Sebastian’s smile faded slightly, but he didn’t argue with her. He simply looked at her deeply, his eyes filled with countless complex emotions.
Xylia didn’t dwell on it and immediately contacted her law firm, sending over her requirements. The earliest they could have a draft ready was in about an hour.
“Let’s go to the café next door,” Sebastian said.
The sky was getting darker, the snowfall heavier, and the temperature was dropping fast. Even wrapped in a thick down jacket, she was starting to feel the cold. If they stayed outside much longer, she might catch a cold.
“Maybe we should just go home for today,” Xylia suggested. “By the time the agreement is ready, the City Hall will already be closed.”
Sebastian pressed his lips together, his expression darkening.
“Today,” he said firmly. “The City Hall isn’t something you need to worry about. Okay?”
The air around him grew heavy, as if he absolutely couldn’t wait another day. Xylia’s mouth twitched slightly as she glanced at the trending article on her phone again.
Looks like his family was really pressuring him—enough to turn the wealthiest man into a marriage-obsessed lunatic.
With the Jackmans’ influence, getting the City Hall to stay open a little longer wasn’t an issue at all.
The two of them went to the café across the street. Sebastian ordered a cup of americano, while Xylia, not fond of bitterness, opted for a hot cocoa.
As they waited, she gazed out the window.
Her ex-husband, Jayden, and Ruby had just walked out of the City Hall, but neither of them looked pleased. Their posture was also a bit strange, as if they were enduring pain in a rather sensitive area.
Xylia propped her chin up and leisurely observed them. She had assumed their functionality wasn’t an issue anymore, but it seemed they were still struggling.
She hadn’t inspected their injuries up close, but based on the medical report, their condition was likely due to an allergic reaction to a certain lubricant, causing skin irritation, ulceration, and even signs of necrosis.
And that was just the initial diagnosis. There was a high chance this would leave lasting effects on their intimate life. Even she wasn’t entirely confident she could cure them.
The two seemed to be arguing, cursing as they got into the car.
By reading their lips, she could roughly guess what they were saying.
“This is all your fault! That damn lubricant—now that the weather’s colder, it hurts even more!” Jayden grumbled.
Ruby, knowing she was to blame, apologized.
“I’m sorry. I’m hurting too.”
“Hurry back and apply the medicine.”
With that, they got into the car and headed straight for the Castro Residence.
“Dad, Mom, you’re back! Play with me, play with me!” Yrian ran over excitedly to greet them.
“Good boy.” Ruby stroked the child’s head with a smile, though the warmth didn’t reach her eyes.
Jayden wasn’t in the mood to play with the child right now and brushed him off with a few words. “I have things to do. Ruby will play with you for a while.”
After saying that, he went straight to the bedroom on the second floor. After applying medicine to a certain indescribable area, he opened the wardrobe. His clothes were neatly arranged, as if he had always been living here.
A faint warmth rose in his heart—it had to be his mother’s doing.
But after rummaging for a while, he couldn’t find his underwear.
“Mom, where did you put my underwear?” he called out.
Irene replied, “Xylia arranged all your things. Look for it yourself.
“Hurry up, son. It’s time to eat,” she urged.
“Got it.”
Jayden paused for a moment, but no matter how hard he searched, he couldn’t find it. Left with no choice, he pulled out his phone and sent a message to that woman—only to discover that he had been blocked.
His gaze darkened instantly. Quite the backbone she had.
He let out a cold laugh, thinking to himself that this time, he definitely wouldn’t forgive her so easily.
Since his old underwear already had an unpleasant odor, he had no choice but to temporarily wear men’s culottes and instructed the housekeeper to buy a new one immediately.
The whole family sat neatly at the table downstairs in the dining room. His mother’s face bloomed into a smile like a flower.
“That wretched woman is finally gone. The whole atmosphere at home feels better now. Come, let’s all have a toast to celebrate!”
Aside from Yrian, who had juice, everyone else raised a glass of red wine.
The atmosphere was lively, but the moment they took a sip, everyone except Yrian frowned.
