Chapter 6 The First Time He Laid Hands on His Ex-Wife
Sebastian’s gaze swept over the warm and cozy decor of the room.
“You’re still young. Pink suits you well.”
Xylia felt a slight warmth on her face. “Thank you.
“But I don’t have any clothes for men here … ”
Sebastian replied, “I’ll have my assistant send some over. Relax, no need to be so nervous.”
Only then did Xylia realize that a thin layer of sweat had formed on her palms. Compared to Sebastian, who was visiting for the first time, she seemed more like the guest here.
“I’ll get you some drinks.”
She hurriedly escaped to the kitchen.
Her phone vibrated twice. Instinctively, she took it out and checked—it was a voice message from Yrian.
“Old hag, Mom’s bacon bits taste awful. You have to make it for me.”
“I want to eat it today!”
Xylia knew exactly who the “Mom” in his message referred to. At that moment, whatever lingering attachment she had for him completely severed. She was about to block him but hesitated and instead set his messages to “Do Not Disturb.”
In the future, she might still be able to learn about the Castros’ situation through him.
Xylia was curious—just how comfortable could the Castros be without her, now that they thought she was useless?
At this moment, in the Castro Residence.
It was nearly midnight, yet the lights were still bright.
For the third time, Ruby failed at making bacon bits, her face turning ashen.
“I don’t care! I want the old hag’s bacon bits! Ruby’s is disgusting!”
Yrian rolled on the ground.
Irene, with dark circles under her eyes, shot a glare at Ruby.
“You can’t even do this? Even Xylia is better than you.”
Ruby bit her lip. After working all night only to be met with disdain, she felt utterly wronged. She looked toward her newlywed husband for help.
Jayden still had some affection for her. Pulling her into his arms, he said impatiently to Irene, “Mom, Ruby is different from Xylia. She’s a career woman and isn’t meant to be stuck in the kitchen. That’s exactly what I like about her.”
Irene pursed her lips, unconvinced. “She can’t even make food that kids like. How will she take care of Yrian in the future? And what about me and your dad?”
Ruby lowered her eyes obediently. “I’ll do my best to learn.”
“I want bacon bits!”
Yrian was still fussing. Jayden took a call and went to his study. Ruby finally managed to coax the child to sleep and checked the time—it was nearly 2 a.m.
The pain in a certain part of her body was unbearable. She hurried back to the master bedroom to apply medicine. Jayden was already asleep. She rummaged through the wardrobe, only to find that all the sleepwear belonged to that woman. With no choice, she turned to her husband for help.
“Jayden, do I have any sleepwear?”
Jayden opened his eyes irritably. “Can’t you buy it yourself?”
Afraid of angering him, Ruby nodded meekly. “I’ll buy it myself tomorrow.”
“You’re my wife now. From now on, you’re responsible for buying my clothes, as well as Yrian’s, Mom’s, and Dad’s. If you need money, just ask Mom.”
The man on the bed spoke lazily.
“Okay.”
A flicker of emotion flashed in Ruby’s eyes. If she could access the Castros’ money so soon, then a little hardship was nothing.
“What about Xylia? Have you taken care of it?” Jayden suddenly asked.
Ruby smirked confidently. “I sent someone. They’ll act tonight. That man just got out of prison—he has a record. They won’t trace it back to us.”
“Move quickly before she spends the money. Within a week, we must get it back.”
What Jayden was worried about was this—one billion in cash wasn’t easy to pull out.
He had used Castro Group’s liquid funds, and if they weren’t replenished in time, the company’s financial chain would break.
He had given Xylia a chance, but she was too greedy. She had no one to blame but herself for his ruthlessness.
That night, Xylia slept exceptionally well.
There was no home invasion as she had imagined, no nightmares haunting her, and no need to wake up early to serve her in-laws. She actually slept until noon.
Fortunately, her hospital shift was in the afternoon, so she had plenty of time.
Stepping out of her bedroom, she was startled to see two towering men in black suits standing outside. It wasn’t until they respectfully greeted her, “Mrs. Jackman,” that she realized they must have been arranged by Sebastian.
“Hello,” Xylia responded a little awkwardly. If she hadn’t already gotten dressed, it would have been even more embarrassing.
“Mr. Jackman has gone to the company. From now on, the two of us will be responsible for your safety. I’m Shadow-1, and this is my younger brother, Shadow-2,” the steadier-looking one introduced.
Shadow-2 was quiet but had a reliable demeanor. He added, “If there’s anything that needs to be moved, leave it to us. We’ll transport it to the new residence.”
“Alright, thank you, Shadow-1 and Shadow-2. Have you eaten yet?” Xylia asked, feeling her own hunger.
“We’ll take care of our own meals. If you’re hungry, Mr. Jackman has prepared food for you. Just heat it up.”
It was only then that Xylia noticed the dishes on the dining table—two simple side dishes and a soup, with a note placed beside them.
“Heat it up before eating. Shadow-1 and Shadow-2 are retired soldiers; they’re trustworthy. Sebastian.”
The handwriting was bold and forceful, exuding a strong sense of stability and security.
A warmth spread through Xylia’s chest. She heated up the meal—just simple, home-cooked flavors—but to her, it felt like something she hadn’t had in years. Her parents had passed away long ago, and she hadn’t felt this kind of warmth in a long time.
She used to think Jayden was her best refuge, but that scumbag wasn’t even worth a stranger she had only known for a day.
After eating, Xylia headed to the hospital.
She had initially worried that having Shadow-1 and Shadow-2 follow her around would disturb her patients, but after dropping her off, they stayed at a reasonable distance, blending into the crowd without drawing attention.
Her impression of Sebastian improved even more.
The afternoon passed quickly. Xylia was originally scheduled for a night shift, but considering the upcoming move and the many things she needed to buy, she decided to take the night off and head to a nearby mall for shopping.
Thinking back to how she used to hand over almost all her salary to her in-laws just to prove she wasn’t after money—so much so that she couldn’t even bring herself to buy new clothes during holidays—Xylia now felt like she had truly been out of her mind. Gritting her teeth, she walked into the high-end boutique she used to love, despite its expensive prices.
“Ms. Watson, it’s been a long time.”
The sales associate greeted her warmly.
Xylia felt her cheeks heat up. Ever since her family went bankrupt, she hadn’t stepped foot in this store.
“It has been a while,” she replied.
The store’s clothing was mostly pink-toned—sweet and versatile. Xylia’s eyes landed on a light pink plush coat displayed in the window, its edges adorned with tiny shimmering crystals. She immediately asked the staff to bring it out.
“Ms. Watson, you still have impeccable taste. This is a newly arrived limited-edition piece—only ten are available worldwide, and this is the only one in the country. It suits your figure perfectly.”
Her current figure, ironically, was thanks to the Castros. After giving birth to Yrian, she had gained 40 pounds. The Castros had repeatedly belittled her, saying she was unpresentable, and outright forbade her from attending any social events. Determined, Xylia forced herself to lose all the weight in just two months, following a strict custom diet plan to regain her former shape.
Later, between work and endless household responsibilities, she stopped caring about high society gatherings and no longer thought about reentering her old social circles.
Looking at her reflection in the mirror, she saw a woman who looked almost the same as before—except for the exhaustion in her eyes. For a moment, she felt as if she had traveled back in time.
The coat fit her perfectly, and Xylia was very satisfied. Just as she was about to ask the store staff to wrap it up, she unexpectedly ran into two people she had no desire to see.
“Xylia?”
Ruby spotted her and instinctively tightened her grip on Jayden’s hand. The man let out a cold sneer. “You really haunt me like a ghost—still following me around?
“Xylia, the divorce is final. Regretting it now won’t do you any good.”
Xylia rolled her eyes.
“Only an idiot would regret it. I’m just here to shop.”
“Hubby, this coat is so pretty! I want this one.” Ruby’s delicate fingers pointed at the coat Xylia was trying on, deliberately emphasizing the word “hubby.”
“Xylia, let Ruby have it. Do you even know your place? You’ve already had a child. Why are you still wearing pink?” Jayden’s face was filled with disdain.
