Nicole’s thoughts mirrored Lucy’s.
Having finally decided to divorce and leave Travis, she didn’t want any circumstances pulling them back together.
“Mr. Graham, since Miss Miller is eager to care for you, surely you don’t need your ex–wife?”
Travis responded without hesitation, “Of course I do! She’s a society princess she can’t handle the dirty work.
You can.”
Though she no longer loved him, it still stung to hear the man she once loved say she was only good for menial tasks.
True, she came from a modest background with a troubled family, but she had worked hard to get into Harvard Medical School and had earned a full scholarship. She didn’t consider herself inferior to any socialite.
In fact, she took pride in her self–reliance, having become an expert in cardiovascular and neurosurgery, leading major national projects. Nicole Spencer had earned her success!
Yet after all these years, even if not as spouses but almost family, Travis still looked down on her.
Nothing hurts more than a dead heart.
Fortunately, Nicole no longer felt that pain.
“Travis, I’ll stay and care for you. But I have one condition.
“Hmph, you dare make demands?”
“Of course. I’m not your wife anymore. Legally, I have no obligation to care for you. I’m here for Grandpa, not because I still love you.”
“Fine, what’s your condition?”
“Once you’ve recovered, I want you to publicly announce our divorce.”
“Absolutely not!” Travis refused instantly.
Nicole was puzzled. “Why not? Once it’s public, every socialite in the city will know you’re most eligible bachelor again. You’ll only become more popular.”
Her indifferent tone infuriated Travis.
Was this woman so desperate to sever all ties with him?
His hand clenched into a fist at his side…
“I can’t agree to that! A public divorce announcement could destabilize investor confidence in Graham Enterprises. I won’t allow it!”
Travis’s refusal was exactly what Nicole had expected.
He’d always been selfish, never allowing anything to harm his interests,
Nicole made another proposal.
Then I want you to stay out of my personal life, Mr. Graham. Whoever I see or spend time with is no longer your concem. And stop harassing Alexander- he’s my friend, and I don’t want him targeted because of me.”

Each word she spoke stoked Travis’s rage higher.
If anger had a temperature, his fury would have incinerated everything in the hospital room.
He lifted his eyes to stare at her, his voice dropping dangerously low. “So your real demand is shielding that man from me?”
Nicole bristled at his constant attacks on Alexander. “Mr. Graham, I’ll say it one more time – Alexander is my friend. Don’t attack him because of me. If you have issues with me, deal with me directly!”
“Shut up! Just shut up! Enough!”
