Lance glanced at me and asked, “Selene, who’s he?”
“I don’t know. Let’s go.”
But just as I was about to leave, Lucian suddenly crawled over, grabbing onto my leg and crying, “Selene, don’t leave me, please!”
I tried to shake him off, but just then, Marina came rushing out of the private room. The second she saw me, she exploded. “Well, well, Selene, you’re really something, huh? Stealing other people’s husbands?”
A crowd started to gather, whispering and pointing at me.
Before I could even respond, Lance stepped in front of me and snapped, “Hey, watch your mouth!”
Marina wasn’t having it. “Why should I? She’s a shameless woman! Seducing someone else’s husband, she’s just a mistress!”
She kept going, shouting louder, until out of nowhere, Lucian slapped her across the face.
Marina gasped and held her cheek, screaming, “You bast**d! How dare you hit me?!”
“You’re the one who’s the mistress here. If it wasn’t for you playing the victim, trying to get me to mess up, Selene and I wouldn’t be divorced. You’re
the one who ruined everything, you nasty woman!”
The crowd went quiet for a second. Then it seemed like everyone started putting things together. They looked at Marina in disbelief.
Marina wasn’t done, though. She grabbed Lucian by the collar and started slapping him right back.
It turned into a full–on scene, with everyone scrambling to get out of the way. Lance quickly stepped in front of me, pulling me out of the mess.
On the way back, Lance glanced at me and asked, “Selene, that’s really your ex–husband?”
I just stared out the window, silent.
“Now I get it. You’re so careful with your heart because you’ve been hurt before.”
I smiled faintly. “That’s all in the past. I just want to move on.”
Lance suddenly grabbed my hand. “And you should. Because I’ll be right here, waiting for you.”
I chuckled softly, almost instinctively pulling my hand away.
But he kept going. “You don’t have to say no to me right away. I’ll show you, through my actions, that I can help you find hope again.”
The whole thing didn’t bother me much, but it did finish off whatever was left of Lucian and Marina’s marriage.
A former colleague told me that these days, whenever they saw Lucian at the office, he looked like a mess, disheveled, downcast, barely even handling his work. Meanwhile, Marina was strutting around in her designer clothes, showing off her wealth, demanding money from the accountants. If they said no, she’d throw a fit, acting like she owned the place.
“Honestly, it’s like Mr. Blake’s been drained dry,” my colleague said with a shake of the head.
I didn’t care much for their drama. Their issues were none of my business.
As for me, my overseas projects were going great, and I spent half the year traveling for work.
At the end of the year, I returned to headquarters for the shareholders‘ meeting. I heard the company was considering acquiring a few businesses that were on the verge of bankruptcy.
When I looked over the list of companies my secretary gave me, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Lucian’s company on there.
