At the very least, not now.
Two days after I was discharged, Aiden finally came home. Chloe was sent to her grandmother’s house. I was sitting alone at the dining table, eating a bowl of plain noodles.
He walked in, took off his coat, changed his shoes, and glanced at me.
His voice was indifferent as he said he was out of town for a conference the past two days. I kept my head down, focusing on my noodles, and didn’t bother responding.
Suddenly, he let out a cold laugh. “I know what you’re thinking. We’re not as disgusting as you imagine. If you don’t believe me, you can check the conference’s official website. There are photos of me giving a speech.”
I finished the bite, got up, and went to the kitchen to wash my bowl.
When I came back out, he was sitting on the couch with his legs crossed, one elbow resting on the armrest. His expression was serious, as if he was about to have some kind of important discussion.
“Lily, at this point, we need to have a real conversation.”
I finally looked at him. “Go ahead.”
He frowned slightly and stayed silent for a moment before continuing, “I admit that I was in the wrong at the beginning, but your reactions and behavior over the past few weeks have gone too far. Yesterday, Chloe called me, crying, asking if we were fighting.
“Your emotions are affecting her. You can’t keep acting like this. I’ve been thinking these past two days. I came up with two solutions. You can choose.”
I sneered. “Oh? Your solutions?”
The muscles in his temple twitched as if he was finally running out of patience. His voice became stern.
“Lily, I need you to focus on solving the problem instead of letting your emotions control you. You’ve yelled, hit, and done everything. Ask yourself, are we really so unforgivable?
“If you truly can’t get past this, we can get a divorce. You can decide on the alimony and the custody. As long as it’s not too outrageous, I don’t mind taking a loss.”
I forced down the emotions and asked, “Okay. That’s your first option. What’s the second?”
He was silent for a few seconds before slowly saying, “For Chloe’s sake, we don’t get a divorce. I promise you, from now on, my interactions with Skyla will stay strictly professional… but on one condition.”
