The research institute was backed by private capital, and Mr. Holmes was the major shareholder. Mrs. Holmes was practically the power behind him.
Hearing Mrs. Holmes‘ words, my eyes burned with emotion
Aiden stood awkwardly off to the side. Social situations like this weren’t really his strong suit.
However, Mr. Holmes already made it clear. If Aiden wanted a chance at getting his position back, he had to keep his family life in order and eliminate all distractions. So, he had no choice but to stand beside me.
Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Skyla.
She was carrying a plate of pastries and walking straight toward us.
Her expression was delicate yet carried a quiet air of arrogance. Her back was ramrod straight, and a bandage was plastered across her forehead.
Softly, she said, “Mrs. Holmes, I personally prepared these desserts on behalf of the logistics department.”
I looked at her in silence.
Her head was slightly bowed, and she stopped just beside Aiden. Whether this was by chance or as a silent challenge from one woman to another, I wasn’t sure.
Mrs. Holmes frowned. “I have diabetes. I can’t eat those.”
Skyla froze for a second, her gaze flicking toward the half–eaten cake in front of Mrs. Holmes. “But… don’t you love desserts?”
Mrs. Holmes‘ face remained impassive. “What I’m eating is Lily’s homemade sugar–free cake. It’s not the same as those overly sweet things from outside.”
The event hall was bustling with people playing games, eating, and laughing. Yet, many of them were secretly watching this exchange.
Mrs. Holmes‘ tone had a sharp, almost sarcastic edge, making Skyla’s face flush with embarrassment.
Out of habit, she glanced at ‘Aiden. However, he didn’t move. He was here today to put on a display of family harmony. Naturally, he wouldn’t do anything inappropriate
