Wayne stood frozen as if struck by lightning. Seeing him falter, I couldn’t help asking Lucy what he had actually said to Kyle.
Lucy explained that when Wayne was relentlessly pursuing me, he told Kyle, “Melanie comes from a family of book lovers and intellectuals. Both her parents are intellectuals. A woman raised in such a household would naturally be gentle and easy to manage.
“Kyle, we already have one bossy woman in the family. What I need is a wife like Melanie. She won’t go against Mom, and Mom can finally enjoy her life.”
“Babe, that’s not true,” Wayne blurted, his voice frantic. “She’s lying. I never said that.”
“I was at your wedding, too,” Lucy remarked. “Wayne cried so much during the ceremony, I actually believed he loved you. But after what happened today, it seems like it was all just a show.”
