Each word he said dragged me further into despair, and I loathed myself for seeing him through rose–colored glasses. I couldn’t take it anymore. I rushed forward and slapped Wayne hard across the face.
He froze, shock overtaking him as he realized what he’d said. “B–Babe…”
“Don’t you dare call me that!” I choked out. “You make me sick, Wayne!”
“Melanie, how dare you hit Wayne? I’ll make you pay for this!” Gloria screeched, picking up a plastic stool and swinging it at me.
Lucy stepped between us, her face cold as stone. She threw a punch, and the stool shattered instantly.
Gloria trembled in fear. The moment she locked eyes with Lucy’s cold stare, she stumbled backward, collapsed onto the floor, and wailed.
“What did I do to deserve this? Our family is in shambles! Two daughters–in–law like this is pure madness! One hits her husband, and the other goes after her in–laws!”
She jabbed a finger at Lucy, then turned to Kyle. “Kyle, if you refuse to divorce her, forget about calling me Mom!” Emily crouched beside Gloria, shouting, “Are you trying to make Mom sick, Kyle? How can you just watch while Lucy tramples over everyone? Are you even a man at all?”
Lucy arched an eyebrow and glanced at Kyle.
He snorted and let go of Wayne. Then, he approached Gloria, trying to help her up, but she threw a tantrum and refused to budge.
Kyle crouched beside her and rolled his eyes at Emily. “You were just at Lucy’s office last week, begging her to help your husband find a job. She got a friend to help him land a job at a foreign company. And now you’re here, kicking her when she’s down. Don’t you have any shame?”
Emily opened her mouth, but words failed her. Finally, she spoke up. “That was mistreating Mom and Dad. You can’t compare the two!”
