“It was Lucy who gave me a second chance at life. But you hurt her and made us lose our only child. That’s something I can never forgive. Lucy and I have done enough for this family. We owe no one anything.”
He got up and reached out to Lucy. Without a word, she pulled two gifts from her bag.
“These are Christmas presents. Lucy never expects anything from any of you, but she always keeps you in her thoughts. This Christmas Eve has been another disaster. Let me make it clear–Lucy will stand with Melanie. So, whatever decision Melanie makes from here, Lucy and I will be by her side.”
Lucy returned to my side and gently squeezed my hand.
Tears filled my eyes, and I found myself at a loss for words.
Wayne and I had been together for three years and had just tied the knot. I had always seen him as my lifelong companion, imagining we’d build a beautiful life together, raise a child, and grow old in peace.
But Lucy was right–I had been naive. I’d never taken the time to understand Wayne’s family or the true challenges of marriage. I looked at Wayne, disappointment flooding my eyes.
He seemed to sense it, and panic spread across his face.
Kyle’s words left Gloria in an awkward silence.
Michael, who had stayed quiet until then, finally spoke up. Your mom and I are getting old, Kyle, and we can’t control
you anymore. But Wayne’s business is not yours to decide. Wayne, do you truly need Kyle and Lucy involved in decisions about your wife?”

Lucy scoffed. “Melanie can think for herself, Michael. She doesn’t need you meddling.”
