New Year’s.
During that time, Wayne showed up at my house every day, either in tears or on his knees, pleading for my forgiveness. But I couldn’t shake the sense that he was just putting on a show.
Dad had to drive him out with a stick more than once.
Wayne dropped the act right before the divorce went through, demanding that I return all the wedding gifts.
Mom and Dad had never cared about those gifts. They immediately arranged for them to be returned to the Coopers by courier.
Lucy said Gloria was ranting and cursing every day, urging Wayne to find a more submissive woman to marry. The Coopers‘ holiday was a mess, with neighbors gossiping and relatives avoiding them.
But honestly, those relatives only ever came around to visit Lucy and Kyle anyway, and the two of them had already left for a vacation in Marvella. The Coopers‘ matters were no longer our concern.
I found a friend in Lucy, who was like a sister to me, and I couldn’t have been more grateful.
