Chapter 6
My relationship with Dayton was not particularly good, but it was not as bad as with Claire either.
But upon hearing Maleah’s words, he unexpectedly turned to me and said, “What’s wrong with you? Instead of staying at home, you come here every day to bully them, what kind of skill is that, preying on widows and orphans?”
I hadn’t spoken yet.
Maleah spoke up, “She wanted to steal my house.”
I said, “This doesn’t count as your house, the court has already ruled and ordered you to move out.”
Dayton became more and more confused as he listened, so Maleah tearfully embellished the story and explained it again.
Dayton was furious. “This is my son’s house, he can give it to whoever he wants, why do you think you can take it back?” I used to think that only Claire was unreasonable, but I never expected Dayton to stoop so low.
Luckily, I was not afraid of him at all.
I rolled my eyes and said, “This is the house that Roland and I bought after we got married. It belongs to us as our post–marital property. He gave this house to her without my consent. I can take it back, and the court has ruled in my favor. What’s the point of disagreeing? I’ll sue again if necessary.”
Dayton was taken aback by the way I looked.
Maleah looked at Dayton with a sad expression and said, “Dayton, I didn’t have any money, and I gave back the money and the house to her. How are Caleb and I going to live?”
Dayton pondered for a moment and then shrugged at me, saying, “How much? I’ll pay for her.”
I was very surprised to hear this, so I took out a tissue from my bag.
Dayton flipped through the pages, his face turning pale in the end. “Valeria, you’ve gone crazy. You even counted a dollar bottle of mineral water.”
I also felt wronged. “Even though flies are small, they are still meat. This money is all my hard–earned money.”
Dayton finished reading those documents and immediately handed them to his secretary, saying, “Later, you transfer the money to her.”
I quickly thanked, “Thank you, Dad.”
“Roland is dead, don’t call me dad.”
“Alright, thank you Dayton.”
Dayton looked at Maleah and said to her, “You moved to my place today and returned this house to her.”
Maleah wanted to say something else, but Dayton glanced at her and arrogantly said, “My place is no less superior than yours. Caleb is my own grandson, even if the law doesn’t recognize it, I do. His name will definitely be in my will.”
Maleah thought for a moment and obediently made room for me.
She was not foolish, after all, Dayton’s wealth was several times that of Roland’s.
I watched as she happily loaded those things onto the car, and I kindly reminded her, “Maleah, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. I advise you to think carefully before moving.”
Maleah’s mouth curled up crazily. “You are just sour grapes. After all, Roland is just a second–generation rich, how can he compare to his father? Unfortunately, you don’t have children. Even if something really happens to the old man, you won’t get a penny of his property.”
After Maleah finished packing everything, she generously invited me to inspect the house.
I sat on the sofa without moving and suddenly asked her a question.
“Maleah, did you already know that you were pregnant before going abroad? Roland’s family liked you so much, and you two were so in love. How did you end up separating?”
I remember when Maleah first returned to the country, Roland didn’t sleep that night. He tossed and turned in bed, constantly checking his phone, afraid of missing any messages.
This sentence seemed to have touched a nerve with Maleah, but I’m not sure why.
She withdrew her smile, her face showing some nervousness.
Chapter 6
“What does it have to do with you? Roland is already dead. Why are you inquiring about this?”
I laughed and said, “It’s nothing, I just thought you would come back to beg me.”
Maleah laughed twice as if she had heard a joke.
“Who begs whom is not necessarily certain.”
