Chapter 5
It wasn’t until the housekeeper came in to control the dog that I managed to free myself.
My hand had been bitten, and I couldn’t stop myself from shivering when I saw the dog again.
The girl, as if I had done something truly unforgivable, started crying loudly.
“Why did you hurt my dog?!
“It just wanted to play with you, and you broke its head!”
She cried, burying her face in Byron’s chest.

Was I supposed to just let the dog attack me? Should I have waited until it bit me to death?
“I don’t understand what this lady is saying, but your dog kept pouncing on me again and again.
“And this time, it even bit my hand.
“I haven’t even asked you for compensation yet, and you’re crying?”
I pushed my bloody hand right in front of Byron and the girl, showing her the wound.
“Ah!” The girl gasped, terrified, and buried her head even deeper into Byron’s chest.
Her fragile act only made Byron look even more concerned for her.
His gaze toward me was full of reproach.
“Lydia, Flora just said that Peach only wanted to play with you.
“It’s because you’re afraid of dogs that Peach reacted like that and bit you.
“You’re really becoming impossible to reason with.”
Byron’s words made me feel utterly disgusted.
He remembered that I was afraid of dogs but still took her side and blamed me.

anymore.
“You can skip the family dinner.”
With that, I straightened myself up, tidied my disheveled appearance, and left for the dinner on my own, without giving Byron a chance to speak.
By the time the family dinner was over, Byron still hadn’t shown up. He didn’t come home that night, just like before.
I was perfectly fine with the peace.
But the girl’s social media updated again.
[Thank you for always being there for me and taking care of Peach.]
The accompanying photo showed a man’s back, who was lovingly petting the dog.
There was no doubt that it was aimed at me, like a deliberate provocation.
I didn’t feel much of anything.
I simply turned off my phone and went to sleep peacefully.
The next morning, I was woken by a loud knock on the door.
I got up and opened it to find Byron, his face red with anger.

I’d changed the lock on the door and forgotten to tell him.
Seeing the foggy weather outside, it wasn’t hard to understand why he was so mad.
He barged past me and sat down on the sofa, glaring at me.
“Lydia, don’t you have anything to say to me?”
Hooked at him, confused.

He slammed his hand down on the table, visibly furious.
“What did you tell my parents this morning?
“They called me and gave me an earful on the phone.
“I never knew you had started complaining about me to them.”
Hearing him, I couldn’t help but laugh.
“What do you think you’ve done to make me complain about you?”
