Chapter 10
I watched as Hayden approached, surprised to see that Joanna wasn’t by his side.
I’ll take care of the piano. Your generosity isn’t needed, Mr. Warner, Hayden declared, his thin lips curving into a tight line as his icy voice cut through the air.
So he was here for this! I couldn’t help but sneered silently.
“So, who are you buying this piano for?” Marlon smiled, but his words cut deeper, Everyone, including Marlon, had witnessed the intimate moment between Hayden and Joanna earlier.
“Are yo
you going back on your word?” 1 frowned, casting a sidelong glance at Hayden. Considering how much he doted on Joanna, I figured he was capable of such a move.
Hayden’s face clouded over. “If you want it, I’m the one who should buy it for you,” he stated, then shot Marlon a venomous glare.
Marlon didn’t miss the shadow than crossed Hayden’s face and sneered, “You really have a big heart, Mr. Parker. Just a moment ago, you were talking about gifting the piano to another woman, and now you’re surdenly remembering your wife?”
“My family matters are none of your business, Hayden shot back coldly, each word dripping with threat
Finally, it clicked for me–Hayden didn’t want Marlon to give me a gift. Maybe he was worried that if word got out, it would tarnish his reputation? What a double standard. He could be close with Joanna, but when someone else showed me a little kindness, he got a problem with it!
Ignoring Hayden, I smiled at Marton. “I’d be happy to accept your kind gesture Could you please send it to Easaline Road?”
“Sure,” Marlon replied with a nod
Hayden frowned at me. “Not Rosy House?”
“Actually, that’s not my home,” I cut in, then turned on my heel and walked away.
When I found Lucy, she had just wrapped up two rounds of drinks with a group. She handed me a glass and asked. “So? Who sent you the piano “Marlon,” I replied daily
“The one from the Warner family? Lucy’s eyebrows shot up, her surprise evident. “When’d you two cross paths?”
Just now”
Lucy paused for a beat, then pressed on, “So, what’s the deal with you two? Why’d he give you a gift that fancy? He likes you?”
“No way.” I rubbed my forehead and whispered, “He’s looking to collaborate with me.
“That’s great. Collaborate means more meetings, and familiarity breeds fondness. Lucy chuckled, her eyes spinning a romantic daydream. I felt helpless. “Doy
you
really want me to cheat that badly! I’m not even divorced yet.
“Hayden’s already been out of line, so why hold back? Besides, it’s just a meeting–not like you have to do anything crazy. What are you so afraid of?” Lucy reasoned.
I wasn’t scared, I just wasn’t in the mood for romance. Glancing around, I asked, “Where’s Joantra Doesn’t she usually stick close to Hayden?”
“She seemed to have left with Nevin first, Lucy said, then her eyes sparkled with curiosity “Speaking of which, how did she hook up with Hayden? I thought be kept his distance from women. How did she pull that off so quickly?”
“Maybe it was love at first sight, I replied, a twinge of sourness in my voice. Love was a funny game–a whole decade couldn’t spark true feelings. but one glance might lead to a lifetime of it
Lucy rested her chin on her hand, deep in thought. “That woman isn’t all that beautiful, it definitely isn’t love at first sight. Maybe she used some kind of trick. You better watch out–she isn’t as simple as she seems”
“Trick?” I echood, recalling how Sophia had played her cards to marry into the Jackson family. So, it wouldn’t be surprising if Joanna had a few tricks of her on
I shrugged it off, saying, “It didn’t matter to me anymore. I’ve already asked Hayden for a divorce:

“What?” Lucy’s eyes widened in shock. “Did you really ask him? What did he say?”
“I think he agreed. But Xander wanted me to wait three more months before moving forward with the divorce,” I replied, taking the chance to fill her in on my new job at Parker Group.
Lucy let out a sigh. Three more months? By that time, she could be knocked up”
My heart skipped a beat–it wasn’t out of the question.
As I was leaving the party. Hayden’s car rolled up beside mine. Since our divorce wasn’t final yer, I had to ride with him.
The driver sat up front in silence, not uttering a peep, and the backseat was weighed down with a dead quiet
My mind drifted back to the last time Hayden and I had shared a car–it was on our wedding day.
He’d sat next to me, silent, radiating a coldness that could chill anyone to the bone. But I was too wrapped up in the thrill of marrying him to really

Only now did 1 see how pitiful I’d been. Why had I clung to a man who didn’t love me at all!
“What’s your relationship with Marlon Hayden asked out of the blue, snapping me out of my thoughts.
“Nothing” I replied, my voice a little more clipped than I intended, though I really didn’t want to talk to him at all.
Just a year ago, I’d been desperate to get closer to him, but now, I couldn’t muster the energy for another conversation. Only I knew the depth of sorrow and disappointment it took to finally let go of my feelings for him
Hayden looked surprised and turned to face me. The Warner family are no saints,”
1 can judge for myself. Just focus on your new love. Just concentrate on your new romance, I retorted he here with me instead of seeing Joanna off?
I thought my attitude would shut him down, but after a beat, he asked, “Whend you pick up the piano!”
with a hint of sarcasm. It was odd–why was
I glanced over at him, puzzled–in the soft glow of the car’s interior light, his handsome features were etched with a starkness, as if they’d been sketched in charcoal.
He seemed as distant as the past, but something felt different. The Hayden I used to know would barely say a word to me, so what was with the sudden chantiness tonight?
I wasn’t in the mood to play guessing games, so I cut to the cluse. “What’s really on your mind here?”
I’ve never heard you play before,” he said slowly, his voice softer than I remembered.
I let out a cold laugh. Before Were you even paying attention to me back then! You want to give the piano to Joanna, right! Sorry, but my mom wanted it before she passed. I can’t give it to you.”
“Your mother passed away?” Hayden suddenly looked up at me, his eyes wide with surprise.
For a moment, I was at a loss for words. As my husband, he hadn’t even known my mom had passed away. It was obvious he’d never really cared about my feelings. Suddenly, a cold shiver ran through my heart.
