Chapter 34
I couldn’t remember how I got pulled out. All I knew was that just when I felt like I might drown, someone yanked me back to life. After a rough round of coughing, fresh air filled my lungs. My mind started to dear, and that all–too–familiar voice broke through the chaos. I’m braten. Yvonne, you nearly sent me straight into the water there! Nevin sat on the edge of the boat, looking worn out.
He was a great swimmer, but even he couldn’t handle Yvonne’s grip. People who couldn’t swim grabbed onto anything like their life depended on in, bolding on for dear life. Lucky for him, he made it out.
Before I could say anything, Nevin suddenly yelled in pain, grabbing his leg as he fell back into the pool. “Ouch! I’ve got a cramp” With a hige splash, the water erupted around him, and soon it was Nevin calling for help underwater,
“Help me.. help!” Even though he was a good swimmer, a cramp was serious business. He’d already used most of his energy, so he could save himself now,
I stood there, frozen in shock. Wait a minute. Nevin had tried to drown me, hadn’t he He’d deliberately rocked the boat, watching with a twisted grin as I splashed into the water.
For a brief moment. I felt a mad urge to laugh–here he was now, floundering just like I had, his energy almost depletel
But if I didn’t lend a hand, I’d be dogged by guilt for the rest of my days. Without any more hesitation, I grabbed the stick he had used to provoke me earlier and stretched it out to him. “Nevint Grab thist
After a good struggle, I finally managed to pull him back onto the boat. Even though he was exhausted, he was still aware.
Once he’d wiped the water from his face and caught his breath, he looked at me, his eyes wide with disbelief. “Why did you save me?” he asked, clearly surprised that I didn’t return his mualice with more malice.
I’m not like you. I won’t just sit back and watch someone drown,” I shot back while I ran my fingers through my long, soaked hair.
Just then, the servants who had come back from the shore noticed our crazy situation and rushed over. “Are you both okay?”
After I fell into the water, the punishment of picking watercress was put on hold. A servant helped me take a hot bath, and after changing clothes, I headed to Xander’s study. As I approached the door, Theard an angry voice from inside.
“Hiring someone is one thing, but now you’re even bullying Yvonne? Nevin. I honestly don’t know how to teach you now. If anything happened to Yvonne, how would I explain it to her grandpa? Xander shouted
“She’s fine,” mumbled Nevin, who had already showered. Even now, with that nonchalant attitude, he thought he had done nothing wrong.
Xander snatched two books from his desk and hurled them at Nevin. They hit him with a loud thad and fell to the floor, but Nevin barely flinched. He’d been through this since he was a kid and had grown numb to it.
I sighed softly, knocked on the door, and walked in. “Xander”
When Xander saw me, his anger faded, replaced by concern. “Yvonne, how are you feeling!”
“I’m okay” I shook my head slightly, keeping my tone steady
“Was it Nevin who pushed you into the water!” Xander asked immediately. No one just fell into the water for no reason, and he knew very well what kind of person Nevin was
Nevin held his breath, staring at me like he was ready to pounce if 1 said anything more
After a brief pause, I said, “I was careless. Nevin even saved me.”
by fell silent.
Instantly, the entire study
Nevin looked the most shocked–he knew the real story better than anyone. He stared at me wide–eyed, as if I had just lost my mind.
I knew if I told Xander the truth, Nevin would definitely face serious consequences. But who knew how he’d retaliate against me? In that moment of panic, I had thought about leaving the Parker family and escaping all this chaos.
Xander was surprised. But Nevin was his grandson anyway, and he didn’t want Nevin to do that thing. After a long pause, Xander finally said, “Is that

so? It seems Nevin has finally learned to respect others?
His last words were clearly a reminder to Nevin. Nevin snapped back to reality. Although he wasn’t pleased, he didn’t say anything more
This way, the falling–into–water thing was settled. Xander turned to Nevin. “Didn’t Yvonne help you with that problem when you hurt Jamic!”
Then you should ask her, Nevin scoffed, impatience dripping from his words.
Xander glanced at me.
“Nevin said he didn’t want my help, so I’m just giving him what he wants,” I replied quietly, standing my ground.
“You’re the one who called Jamie and told him to sue me,” Nevin practically shouted, veins bulging on his forehead.
“Nevin” Xander scolded, his expression darkening. That finally got Nevin to quiet down a bit.
I didn’t plan to explain further. “If there’s nothing else, I’ll go back to picking watercress.”
“Have you lost your mind? Nevin finally asked, sounding confused. He couldn’t believe I wanted to go back to picking watercress right after everything that had happened.
Xander shot him a sharp look before saying, “Yvonne, you’re still weak. Go back and get some rest.”
“Okay,” I nodded and beaded out
Not long after, Nevin caught up with me. “Hey! Why didn’t you tell Grandpa the truth just now?” he asked, and for once.
I didn’t bother to look at him Too lazy to explain
his confidence faltered
Nevin paused for a moment, then finally said, “Don’t think I’m thanking you for this His fence tone didn’t match the awkward look on his face,
I stopped in my tracks, and he quickly raised his hands in front of himself. “W–What are you going to do“”
I squinted at him. “I don’t get it. Why do you hate me so much? I haven’t done anything to hurt you.
For a long moment, Nevin was silent Finally, he blurted, “I just can’t stand you, so what?”
That wasn’t exactly a solid counter. I didn’t respond further and turned to walk away. I moved quickly, so I didn’t hear him mumble behind me. “It’s because you took Hayden away”
Nevin had kept a secret for many years, something he had never shared with anyone. It all started back when Hayden was in college.
One day, they were playing basketball when Yvonne showed up to bring Hayden some water. After that she left, and instead of sticking around to play, Hayden took off to find her.
Bored, Nevin decided to follow him. What he discovered shook him to his core: he saw Hayden kissing Yvonne, who had dozed off under a tree.

Hayden, who had never shown interest in women before, had actually kissed Yvonne. Nevin was completely stunned at that moment. Ever since, he’d developed a strong distaste for her. Whenever she was around, it felt like Hayden’s attention was always split
But now, for some reason, Nevin couldn’t help but feel that Yvonne wasn’t as irritating as she used to be.
After spending the entire day at the Parker residence, I returned to Rosy House that evening and, unsurprisingly, came down with a high fever,
Rita touched my forehead and gasped. “You have a fever! I call Mr. Hayden Parker.”
Huddled in bed, my thoughts a jumbled mess from the pain, I heard her last words and couldn’t help but scoff silently.
Was there any point in calling Hayden? Why subject myself to that humiliation! He wouldn’t come back; he might just say, “If she’s sick, go to the hospital. Why are you looking for me? I’m not a doctor.”
As expected. Rita called for ages with no response. Eventually, she decided to summon the family doctor.
After I took some fever medicine, I drifted off, half asleep in bed. That was when Deborah arrived at my bedside. In my daze, I felt her gently squeeze my hand.
She let out a soft sigh. “Yvonne, look at you–so frail I can’t believe Xander sent you out to pick watercress in this heat. When I get back, I’m giving him a serious talking–to. And where is Hayden? Why hasn’t he come back yer?”
“He didn’t answer his phone. I asked his driver, and he said… Rita paused.
“Spit it out!” Deborah snapped, her patience wearing thin,
Rita was scared and quickly continued, “He said Mr. Parker is with Ms. Charlotte looking for houses.”
“What? That brad! His wife is sick, and he’s out with another woman. Does he even know how to be a husband Deborah was furious, her teeth gritted in anger.
My eyelashes fluttered slightly, and my nose felt sore. Maybe Hayden had never really seen me as his wife. The one he liked was Joanna.
In the middle of the night, my fever still hadn’t gone down, and I was taken to the hospital’s emergency room. I had an oxygen monitoring my heart, and countless IV injections.
mask on, wires
I thought it was just a simple fever, but it turned out to be much more serious. I lost track of how long I tossed and turned Half–awake, I felt someone gently tucking me in and stroking my forehead while talking softly.
Unfortunately, I was too exhausted to remember a single word. Was it Hayden? It didn’t really seem like him. He wouldn’t treat me that gently.
When I finally woke up, it was already the afternoon of the next day. The first person I saw was Marlon, and I was genuinely surprised.
He noticed my shock and had a somewhat helpless expression on his face. “Are you disappointed? Were you hoping I was Hayden?
Instinctively, I wasn’t keen on answering his question. I rugged the quilt tighter around me, mustered the strength to sit up, and asked, “Why are you here?
Thappened to be at the hospital last night and saw you in the emergency room,” Marlon said simply before quickly changing the subject. “You’re really sick; why isn’t he with you?”
That accusatory tone made me chuckle lightly. Without hiding anything, I replied, “Don’t you know? He’s with Joanna”
This was probably common knowledge in Elysiumville, right! If he were by my side, that would be stränge.
Marlon’s charming eyes showed surprise. “You don’t seem to care at all
Docs caring even help?” I shot back. Being sick drained all my energy, and I didn’t want to waste time being nice. Plus, I didn’t have the patience to talk about Hayden
Marlon wasn’t angry at all. Instead, he nodded seriously and said, “You’re right. It’s best to kick a guy like that out so he doesn’t become a burden.
I chuckled a hit. “Well, it’s up to you, Mr. Warner. If you’re willing to give me a little more of the profits, I can feel confident enough to ditch
