Chapter 50
Hayden had always been the stoic type, someone who never really paid any attention to Nevin’s antics, let alone actually hit him. But now, was he really going to lay hands on his own brother?
I was right there, witnessing it all unfold, and I could hardly believe my eyes. It was as if Hayden had transformed into a different person.
Nevin’s eyes were wide with shock, almost trembling as he cupped his face, staring incredulously at Hayden. His eyes were red–rimmed, “Bro, you you hit me
Throughout their lives, Hayden had never laid a finger on him. So what was it that triggered this today? The lingering burn on Nevin’s cheek was a painful reminder that the slap had definitely happened.
“Apologize to Yvonne” Hayden’s scy gaze was fixed on Nevin, his eyes as cold and sharp as a winter’s frost, making the air around them feel tense
I instinctively glanced at Hayden. Did he hit Nevin for me? No way, right? Maybe he was just worried about Nevin getting into trouble.
Assault and defamation? Nevin would be lucky to avoid prison!
As Nevin ground his teeth together, he swallowed hard, refusing to speak. He glared at me, his eyes filled with an intensity that felt hostile, like I was some kind of enemy
“Hurry up” Hayden urged, his tone leaving no room for argument.
Finally, Nevin spat out a few words, “I’m sorry
It hit me then–this rowdy Nevin could actually apologize when he wanted to
In that moment of distraction, Stanley asked me, “If you don’t accept the apology, you can still take legal action. Just like that, the ball was in my
COLT
Hayden’s gaze shifted to me, assessing. I ignored him and replied blandly, “Forget it, let’s just handle Jamie’s situation first.
With Nevin having apologized, my insistence would do no real damage. Plus, Xander was still around, I couldn’t disregard the Parker family’s reputation entirely.
Stanley nodded. I’ll start the official process. Everyone can head home tonight”
Once we left the police station. Hayden pulled Stanley aside to talk. Jamir and I waited off to the side.
Nevin was standing there, still protecting his face, glaring at me with venom in his eyes Probably embarrassed over having to apologize in front of everyone! He looked genuinely hurt.
I chose to ignore him, but Jamie couldn’t hold back. “What are you glaring at? You not done getting beaten yet?
“Was I glaring at you! If someone hadn’t intervened just now, I would’ve taken you out! Nevin harked back, showing his teeth in defiance. Hayden caught wind of the commotion and shat a cold glance in their direction. Nevin immediately shrank back like a mouse in front of a cat, lowering his head in submission. Clearly, he was scared of Hayden
I pulled Jamie aside and whispered, “Don’t stoop to his level. Right now, the situation is in your favor. Let’s see what Stanley has to say
“Okay” Jamie nodded but then seemed to recall something and asked, “You… should we go check on you at the hospital? I remember the crash sounded pretty bad”
“It’s fine, it wasn’t serious” I had felt a bit of pain back then, but it was long gone now. Plus, I always felt a bit resistant about hospitals; I didn’t want to deal with that hassle.
Before long, Stanley finished chanting with Hayden and walked over with his briefcase in hand. “Let’s go. I’ll drive you guys home.”
I was about to turn and follow when Hayden called out. Yvonne, come home with me
Lfroze for a moment, I didn’t expect him to call me now.
“Bro, why are you still bringing her along! She’s helping outsiders.” Nevin grumbled quietly, clearly annoyed
Hayden ignored him, his cold gaza still fixed on me. “Don’t forget you’re still Mrs. Parker:

not going with him. Stanley would definitely back me up, and that might lead to more conflict
After a long day, I felt exhausted. I looked at Stanley and said, “Hey, you and Jamie should go on ahead. I’ll catch up with you tomorrow.”
Stanley hesitated, glancing at me, but in the end, he nodded and left with Jamic.
Nevin and I got into Hayden’s car. I sat in the passenger seat, staring out at the pitch–black sky, reflecting on how intense today’s trip to the police
station had been….
Nevin, in the back seat, looked totally unhappy. “Bro, just drop me off anywhere. I’m free now anyway, and tagging along with you might get me in
trouble!”
“I’m taking you back to the Parker residence.” Hayden replied in a low voice, his tone leaving no room for negotiation.
Nevin choked on his words and started to plead, “I don’t want to go back. Grandpa will kill met Laur time, he made me go pick watercress, and I almost drowned“”
It was better he didn’t bring that up. But as soon as he did, Hayden pressed, “You’re a decent swimmer. How could you nearly drown? What exactly happened that day?”
Hayden only found out about it after asking the household staff, but no one seemed to know the details at that time.
Nevin instinctively fell silent. I listened quietly, not wanting to interrupt
Hayden then turned to me. “What do you say?
“Not much to tell, really. Nevin rocked my little boat and scared me into the water. He only pulled me out when I looked like I was about to drown. I said coldly. Since Hayden wanted to know, I figured it was best to lay it all our
I had already burned my bridges with them, so there was no point in pretending anymore.
Nevin quickly jumped in. “But I fell into the pool afterward and almost died roof”
“How did you get out? Hayden asked again.
“She saved me,” Nevin almost whispered by the end, his voice almost inaudible. Even he felt embarrassed. He had meant to prank me but ended up needing my help.
I could feel Hayden’s gaze on me, intense and deep, after hearing that. After that, he didn’t say a word, just drove in silence.
Once we arrived at the Parker residence, Hayden recounted the incidents of the watercress picking and everything that had happened today to Xander. Nevin stood next to me, visibly shivering and pale,
Xander finally lost it, grabbing something from the table and throwing it at Nevin. “You idiot! Is this how you treat your sister–in–law? Yvonne has always helped you, and you still pull this kind of stunt! What exactly is your problem with her?”
I thought to myself, he could have a long list of grievances against me! But Nevin muttered in response, “I just don’t like her! She stole my brother!” I stood there, stunned. I stole Hayden? Had he lost his mind! If anyone should be complaining, it should be me about Joanna.
