We did not get too many jobs at first, but I was sure our business would only grow from here.
One afternoon, I was having a coffee break after finishing a design when I heard the door open. I thought it was a customer, but my smile froze when I saw the person at the door.
Julian walked toward me. “I’m here for business.”
“What kind of business?”
Julian sat down opposite me, looking at me with devotion in his eyes. “I want to make a ring for my wife. I hope she’ll forgive me and come home with me.”
I laughed. “Do you know what you look like right now, Julian? You’re a joke!”
Julian did not react to my insult. “I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you after you moved out. I couldn’t sleep or eat well. Molly, I can’t live without you. Come back to me, please.”
He did look rather haggard, his short hair unkempt. Even his shirt was crumpled. He was a neat freak, so I rarely ever saw him so downtrodden.
If it were before, I would surely be moved. Now, though, I only felt frustrated and annoyed. I wanted nothing more
than to be rid of him.
“I don’t love you anymore, Julian, so I don’t care whether you live or die. If you keep bugging me, I’ll leave this city. I’ll go where you’ll never find me again!”

Julian looked hurt, as though he could not believe I was doing this to him. I could not care less how he felt, standing up and heading upstairs.
Later, my employee told me he remained seated there for a long time, his eyes red. Apparently, he even cried.
I treated his entire act like a show, my heart completely unmoved. He got what he deserved! ·
That evening, Evie and I were leaving the store when we saw Caleb standing at the door.
He held a small cake out to Evie. “This is your favorite blueberry cake.”
Evie accepted it, and Caleb seemed to heave a sigh of relief. Are you done with your tantrum? It’s time to come home now.”
