Chapter 6
Darren hadn’t been back for so long and many people had forgotten about him. So, not many people attended this wedding.
In an unexpected turn of events, Juan, Ned and I even managed to get seats in the front
row.
During the wedding vows, Darren took the microphone from the officiant and spoke with deep affection, recounting the emotional journey he and Vivie had been through.
He remembered every detail clearly.
I sat in the audience, my eyes reddened. It was because some of the things he mentioned were memories of the time when he and I were together.
During university, Darren not only had stunning looks but was also wealthy and talented. He had all the traits that the male
protagonist of a novel would possess.

As someone who harbored special feelings for him, I wasn’t exactly the most suitable person.
All his admirers flocked to him, but I always kept a cold face and started arguing with him as soon as I saw him.
In those four years, the only time we ever reached an agreement was during a heavy rainstorm. His father was celebrating his birthday and invited both of us to come home for dinner.
We attended the same university, so the driver naturally picked us both up together.
Because of the heavy rain, the traffic was backed up and the driver didn’t arrive for a long time.
There was about a meter of distance
between Darren and me, but after a quick glance, we both quickly looked away.
Suddenly, a faint mewing sound came from the bushes.

At first, we both thought we had misheard, but the sound grew louder and I couldn’t help but squat down and push aside the bushes.
“It’s a cat!” I exclaimed in surprise and Darren walked over, equally surprised.
He loved animals and before I could even pick the kitten up, he was already ahead of me, lifting it by the scruff of its neck.
“It’s probably a stray cat that gave birth here.”
Darren said with a hint of regret, “It’s a pity.”
“Hey, I was the one who found it first…” I silently looked at him, feeling a little unhappy.
He glanced at me and said, “My family can have cats.”
Those words immediately shut me up.
My mom was allergic to cat fur, so pets were never allowed in our house. Every

time I felt the urge to have one, I could only suppress it for my mom’s sake, never mentioning wanting a pet.
His words hit exactly the right spot.
That day, it was only natural that he adopted the little kitten. And I would use the excuse of having discovered that little cat to have him send me photos and videos from time to time.
That was one of the few times I got to peacefully coexist with him.
But now, at his wedding, he reminisced, “The little cat that Vivie and I raised
together may no longer be with us, but our love will last forever.”
After saying that, he looked at Vivie with a
sweet gaze.
Vivie, smiling softly, gazed at him with tenderness.
I couldn’t help but admit, Vivie’s acting skills were superb. She could pretend to be

fully immersed in the moment, offering Darren the greatest comfort, even though she knew that particular memory had nothing to do with her.
No wonder Darren couldn’t live without her.
When Darren felt lost and uncertain about the world, Vivie’s sudden appearance was like a lifeline to him.
She was that important. How could I possibly tear them apart?
The wedding proceeded smoothly.
Those who had been expecting me to cause a scene were disappointed, but when Darren and Vivie raised their glasses to toast, everyone put on bright smiles.
They spoke of a hundred years of harmony and a lifetime of love.
As they spoke, the conversation eventually shifted to our table. After everything that had happened, I was now able to face him

calmly.
He and Vivie raised their glasses and everyone spoke kind words, except for me.
I really couldn’t bring myself to say anything.
He didn’t seem to mind. He treated me as nothing more than a stranger.
As they were about to turn and leave, I called out to them. “Darren.”
He paused, then calmly turned around.
All eyes turned to me and many people’s gazes became subtly eager.
I even heard someone whispering in the crowd, “Is Cindy finally going to cause a scene?”
Vivie tensed for a moment but then
remembered our conversation in the
makeup room. She quickly put on a smile and asked, “What’s wrong?”
I ignored her and only looked at Darren. “If

It was truly an ill–timed question. But I really wanted to know.

In just a few hours, I would be leaving this place and I couldn’t leave without
knowing.
I wouldn’t be at peace otherwise.
Once the question left my lips, everyone around us held their breath, waiting for Darren’s response.
After a long pause, he finally seemed moved. “I would only feel grateful that fate gave me and her another chance to start
over.”
He took Vivie’s hand again and walked away without looking back.
This was the fourth time. I silently reminded myself. “There will be no fifth.‘

I had already prepared myself for this moment. Though it hurt, it wasn’t unbearable.

I just wanted to bring things to a final conclusion. From this day forward, Darren and I would have nothing to do with each other, ever again.
