She’s got solid practical skills and often helped me with teaching surgeries, a gig for the best students. After that, she got hired by NYHHC and worked there for about ten months. Everyone’s faces changed. A few folks frowned, shrugged, and then looked at me.
At that moment, I wished I could vanish. I wished I had never shown up Sweat started to bead on my forehead as I bit down hard.

I cleared my throat, stood tall, and put on a smile. “Sir, my boyfriend got transferred to LA by his company and will be here permanently. We didn’t want to do long–distance, so I decided to come back to LA and restart my internship. Oh, and Mr. Caposta, I grew up in LA. Coming back here feels like home, and I’m happy to be living a great life with my boyfriend.”
Federico sneered, “Seems like Dr. Davis and her boyfriend are pretty tight. Best of luck to you both.”

A fere folks gathered around Federico as they headed up the escalator, leaving me atanding there alone.
I watched his tall figure disappear and snorted.

I let out a sigh of relief, but a tiny bit of sadness crept in. I’d never get be with a guy like him,
I turned and made my way to the elevator, heading to the department here I’d start my job.
Hank told me to shadow Dr. Morgen for a month to get up to speed with the cardiothoracic surgery team.
Dr. Morgen wasn’t tall, had messy light yellow hair that didn’t qualify any hairstyle, and spoke super fast. His brain clearly worked eve Easter. Following him seemed like a good deal; he was obviously a genius doctor who lived and breathed medicine.
The morning flew by, and Olivia, with her trademark enthusiastic smile, bounced over to me. “Sarah, you done? Let’s grab some lunch. I’ll show you the cafeteria.”
I glanced at Morgen, who was scribbling away on a case report, hoping he’d give me a post–op patient check. Honestly, Olivia’s enthusiasm was a bit much for me. I was used to being alone and doing everything solo. Back at NYHHC, I often worked until the cafeteria was about to close before grabbing a bite alone.
But Morgen kept his nose in the case file and said casually, ‘Go ahead. Compared to public hospital cafeterias, PCCH’s is like a Michelin restaurant. PCCH is worth your hard work!
I faked a cheerful tone and said to Olivia, “Let’s go. Can’t wait.”
On the way to the cafeteria, I overheard people whispering about the new CEO. The name Caposta kept popping up. The whole hospital was buzzing with curiosity about Federico.
Olivia leaned in and said in a mysterious tone, “I heard the new CEO is still single!”
“Oh, yeah, single.” Not news to me.
“Then you have a shot! Olivia winked at me with a sly grin.
Her comment caught me off guard.
