Chapter 23 Chatting Like Friends, Parting Like Lovers
Sarah’s POV
By the time we rolled up to the swanky Broadstone apartment baikling the rain had finally called it quits.
gave up fighting Federico. Looked like I had no choice but to crash he tonight.
I just hoped he’d keep his wond and let me have some space.
Luca grabbed my suitcase and escorted Federico and me to the top floo He wished me good night and then vanished into the elevator.
There was only one apartment on the entire top flour.
Federico stayed quiet. I trailed behind him to this massive bronze done.
The door swung open, and the lights flicked on
I was floored, my jaw practically hitting the ground, as I stepped into the huge hall. Across from the living room was this gigantic floor to–ceiling window, showing off half of LA’s nightscape.
Damn, it was so gorgeous.
No wonder Julia wanted to marry a rich dude, way ticher than her ex, the lawyer.
Being loaded must be the life. I chuckled at my own thought.
“What? Decided to stay now? Federico’s voice cut in from behind me.
I spun around, a bit jittery. “You promised me.”
“Chill I won’t break my promise. I’ll have a drink and then bounce,” he said casually.
I headed into the bedroom next door, grabbed a clean set of clothes from my suitcase, and changed.
He was already nursing a half glass of whiskey with ice, standing by the bar. When he saw me come out, he handed me a bottle of mineral
“Sarah, can I talk to you?” He walked over to the big sofa and plopped down in the middle.
1 finally let out a sigh of relief after hearing his promise.
I sat next to him, chugging half the bottle of water in one go. It had been a long night, and I was beat and parched.
Federico uttered, “Tell me about your boyfriend.”
blushed and looked down, staying quiet. What could I say? It was clear he already knew I was full of it.
He leaned in closer and whispered, “It’s a good thing you lied. If your called boyfriend left you in that sketchy basement in Little Italy and ditched you, I’d find him tonight and snap his neck. If the girl I like would rather pick such a jerk over me, I’d take it as an insult.”
Federico’s scent surrounded me, and I felt a bit lightheaded.
Realizing my awkwardness, I coughed lightly and shrugged. “Yeah, I lied But you kinda forced me to?

“Really?” He leaned back on the sofa, looking all comfy, and took a sip his drink. “So, why’d you leave New York?”
Because I was getting feed out at work.”
“feed out?” He studied my face, like he was trying to see if I was lying again.
I got chewed out by my coworkers.”
“Chewed out?”
“I made some small mistakes at work and got scolded by the hospital. had to leave,” I explained.
I tried to play it off like it was no big deal, hoping he wouldn’t see through it. But clearly, he wasn’t buying it.
Federico pressed on, “How long are you gonna keep lying to me? You think those reasons would convince me? Come on, be real, little liar.”
I slumped my shoulders and let out a deep sigh. He was too sharp,
“Sarah, don’t be scared. I hope you can trust me or at least think of me as family.”
Honestly, Federico’s kind and sincere look got to me. It felt like, at this moment, I really had a family member.
Federico seemed genuinely worried about me, and my heart started to rice again.
For so many years, I had been used to handling everything on my own never thought that if I had someone to share the load with, my life might be easier.
was sexually harassed and blackmailed, I finally spoke.
His eyes immediately narrowed. I had no doubt that if David were here he’d be a dead man by now.
“That sounds like the truth. So, the night we met at the pirate bar, when you said you lost everything, that day, you lost your job, right?”
I nodded and continued, “And on that day. Julia dropped the bomb that he was getting hitched. She canceled the lease on our NY apartment and tossed my stuff. You should know, Emily’s also in NY, so Julia was always visiting her and had a long–term rental. I was riding that wave. Her getting married? Total disaster for me.”
He chuckled, “Looks like that day, both of us were about to bail on NY, leaking for one last wild night.”
“Wild night? If I hadn’t bumped into you, I wouldn’t have gone wild,” I said.
“If you hadn’t met me? You might’ve been assaulted by some other guy, stated Federico.
I turned my head and couldn’t help but laugh.
That night
as more than just wild; it was the ultimate sexual experience.
I–stretched lazily and winked at him. “So, Mr. Caposta, I lied to you on my first day at work ‘cause I had to keep some distance from you.”
He nodded. “Back then, I didn’t think about your privacy. Sorry, Sarah.7
Federico’s voice was gentle and polite. I was even a bit touched. Sitting with him like this and chatting like friends, I felt really good.

I immediately got alert and quickly stood up, “Mr. Caposta, I think you got important stuff tomorrow. It’s fate; time for you to leave.
He grinned, “Look at how freaked out you are!”
With that, he stood up and walked to the door. Tomorrow, I’ll sort out your apartment,” he added.
1 quickly waved my hand “No, I don’t want to trouble you.”
“Afraid I’ll spend money on you?”
“Yeah, I don’t want to cure you or become some kept woman.”
“You’re now the daughter of the Caposta family. No one would dare gossip.”
I shrugged. “Julia doesn’t think so.
He sighed lightly. “Alright, you go to work, and I’ll have someone find an apartment for you. What’s your budget?”
I bit my lip. “No more than $2000 a month.”
$2000? You sure that amount can get you a place over 800 square feet
500 square feet is big enough!”
*800 square feet? T
That’s not even as big as my bathroom,” he remarked nonchalantly,
I rolled my eyes, thinking, “You’re a rich kid. How could you understand me?
“Alright,” he compromised, “$2000. Try to find one close to the hospital, Any other requirements?”
I thought for a moment and stammered, “I hope t
e the apartment has a view of the sunrise.”
He snorted, like he was mocking my modest request, but not in a mean way. “You want to see the sunrise and still lived in a basement?”
I blushed and scratched my head awkwardly
Federico’s expression softened, showing genuine concern. “Sarah, in situations where I can’t have your back, you gotta learn to watch
for yourself.”
I was touched by his sincerity, and my eyes couldn’t help but redden.
Neither of us spoke, and the large apartment fell silent.
His deep blue eyes were less than 4 inches from me. His high nose and sexy lips were so close.
I suddenly felt my tongue stiffen, my throat dry, and my ears started to heat up.
Federicus head seemed to move closer to me. I saw him sl
im slightly lick his lips, which reflected a faint white light.
slightly parted my lips, lifted my chin, and pushed out my chest. His breathing grew closer, and I closed my eyes, my heart racing.
At that moment, I almost thought he was going to kiss me. But my lips never met a fiery kiss as I expected.
His voice came from beside my ear. Tonight, I’ll cut you loose. Get some rest.”

With that, he opened the door and walked out without looking back.
I turned and leaned against the wall, scratching it with my hands, biting my lips to hold back the smile that was about to burst out.
Sarah, you almost lost control! I scolded myself as I licked my lips, my heart still pounding in my chest.
