I moved to my new workplace and started a new life, meeting new potential partners and beginning a new relationship.
I still kept an eye on news about Jack. Since losing his job, he had been deeply affected.

With a baby brother who needed constant care, no job, and a terrible reputation, eligible women ran away at the mere mention of their family.
With both his career and love life in shambles, he became depressed and resigned himself to living off his parents.
In my previous life, I hadn’t directly answered her question.
His father, despite his advanced age, had to go out to work to support his two good–for–nothing sons.
The next time I saw them was when I was leaving a jewelry store with my boyfriend after buying an engagement ring.
I saw Jack’s mother holding a child in each hand. The younger child was thin and small, covered in dirt.
With her other hand, she was grabbing Jack, cursing: “You ungrateful wretch, stealing even your brother’s milk money. We can’t go on living like this.”
Jack was now addicted to buying lottery tickets. People tend to rely on gambling for a sudden windfall when they realize change their situation.

“What do you mean stealing? The money in the house is partly mine, I can spend it how I want. I told you not to have the baby back then, but you insisted. It’s because of this burden that our family is so poor now, and I can’t even find a wife. Why don’t you all just die?” Jack said impatiently, shaking off his mother’s grip.
His mother lost her balance and fell straight to the ground. At her age, such a fall was no small matter.
She sat on the ground, howling in pain, while people around started pointing and whispering.
Jack, feeling embarrassed, didn’t even bother to check if his mother was okay. He turned and quickly pushed through the crowd, heading towards the other side of the street.
Perhaps in his haste to leave, he didn’t notice the small car coming towards him.
His body was hit and sent flying, spinning 360 degrees several times before free–falling heavily onto the road.
“Wow!” I couldn’t help but exclaim, suppressing the urge to go check if he was alive or dead.
My boyfriend asked, “You know him?”
“Ex–boyfriend. Tsk tsk! What a pity!” I sighed.
“Those who are pitiful often have detestable qualities, he said. I had told him about my past before.
I gave my boyfriend a bright smile: “This is karma. What goes around, comes around.”
